ELROY, Wis. — Harold D. "Hi" Vogler, 93, of Elroy died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Elroy. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elroy. John R. ‘Jack' Larson
SPARTA, Wis. — John R. "Jack" Larson, 69, of Sparta died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in Mayo Clinic Hospital, Phoenix, Ariz. Funeral services will be at
10 a.m. Saturday in Lanham-Miller Funeral Home and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, both in Sparta. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. until the time of services Saturday, both at the funeral home. A complete obituary will follow in Thursday's paper.
Vila Elizabeth Swangstu
VIROQUA, Wis. — Vila Elizabeth Swangstu, 90, died Monday evening, Feb. 23, 2004, at Bethel Home in Viroqua, where she had been a resident since June 2003. She was born Dec. 31, 1913, in the town of Freeman, Crawford County, Wis., to Melchor and Rhodina (Christiansen) Nelson.
She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1933 and then graduated from Vernon County Normal School in 1934. She taught at the Hinkst rural school near Liberty Pole.
On July 25, 1938, she married Elmer Swangstu. Elmer and his brother, Tommy Swangstu, were in partnership in the implement business in Viroqua, and Vila worked for the company as a bookkeeper. After selling the business they moved to Madison, returning to Viroqua in 1984 after retiring.
Vila received outstanding care at Bethel Home and from the Vernon Memorial Hospice personnel. She and her family were very appreciative of that care. She was a very caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed.
Vila is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth (James) Fauske of New London, Minn.; one son, Edward (Judy) Swangstu of
El Paso, Texas; grandchildren, Kristin and Jennifer, and their mother, Joann Peterson-Guthrie, Heidi and Steven Swangstu, Aaron (Sarah) Fauske and Ben (Kristy) Fauske; five great-grandchildren, Ashley and Dominique Swangstu and Madison, Ashley and Anna Fauske; one sister, Louise Lunder of Kindred, N.D.;a sister-in-law, Minerva Nelson of Viroqua; and other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer on Jan. 11, 1985; and a brother, Leland Nelson on May 25, 1989.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua, with Pastor Ron Ahlgren officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until the time of service. Burial will be in Viroqua Cemetery.
Danford Olson
HARMONY, Minn. — Danford Olson, 62, of Harmony died peacefully at home Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, after battling cancer for several months.
Danford was born Sept. 2, 1941, in Lanesboro, Minn. On Nov. 3, 1963, he married Janeen Lawson.
Danford lived most of his life in the Harmony area. Danford was a beloved husband, dad, and grandpa. He enjoyed ice fishing, camping, antiques and traveling. He was employed
25 years with Pederson Bros. and the past 5 years at Minnowa Construction as a truck driver.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tom (Shelly) of Chatfield, Minn., and Tim (Corey) of Harmony; five grandchildren, Nathan, Chad, Ross, Ben and Abby; two brothers, Ordean and Ordon Olson of Harmony; and four sisters, Carla (John) Erickson of Harmony, Phyllis (Kenneth) Gregorson of Harmony, Betty Willert of Austin, Minn., and Daphne (Roger) Lawson of Jacksonville, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 1 p.m. at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, with the Rev. James Radatz officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lindstom Funeral Home in Harmony and at the church one hour before services Thursday. Burial will be at Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.

Blair, Wis. — Arthur H. Uecker, 88, of Blair, formerly of Owatonna, Minn., died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, in his home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6, in Zion Lutheran Church, Blair. Burial will be in Saint John Cemetery, Owatonna, at 1 p.m. Monday, March 8. Visitation will be 4 to
8 p.m. Friday, March 5, in Jack Funeral Home, Blair, and also one hour prior to the services at the church Saturday.
Beatrice B. Kvigne
Mount Sterling, Wis. — Beatrice B. Kvigne, 90, of Mount Sterling died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004. She was born Dec. 1, 1913, in the town of Freeman, Crawford County, Wis., to Chris and Lulu (Newton) Ellefson. She was baptized and confirmed at Freeman Lutheran Church. Beatrice graduated from Viroqua High School in 1932 and from Vernon County Normal. She taught school at Rolling Ground, Oak Ridge and Boma schools.
On May 22, 1942, she married Adolph Kvigne. They farmed at rural Ferryville all their married life. She moved to Mount Sterling in 1995. Beatrice was an active member of Utica Lutheran Church and Esther Circle. She had a heart of hospitality, and no one left her home without a cup of coffee.
Beatrice is survived by two sons, Alvin (Konnie) and Roger, both of Mount Sterling; one grandson, Scott Kvigne of Apple Valley, Minn.; two granddaughters, Lisa Kvigne of Apple Valley, and Amy (Dennis) Emerson of Ferryville, Wis.; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel Emerson; one brother, Paul Ellefson of Viroqua; and nieces, nephews and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph on Feb. 24, 1999; three sisters, Estella Ross, Ruth Thompson and Margaret Morrison; and by three brothers, Alfred, Clinton and Millard Ellefson.
The family is very appreciative of the help provided by Vernon Memorial Hospice, Pastor Gary Wees and the many friends and family who stopped to visit her these past weeks.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Utica Lutheran Church. Pastor Gary Wees will officiate, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dommersnaes-Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills, Wis., and at the church Friday from noon until the time of services.
Evelyn F. Brooks
Port Orange, Fla. — Evelyn F. Brooks, 83, of Port Orange died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in Port Orange. She was born Aug. 16, 1920, in La Crosse and moved to Port Orange in 1990. She attended nursing school in Lincoln, Neb., and was a registered nurse. She served in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps during World War II as a second lieutenant. She loved bingo and sewing. She is survived by three sons, Richard of Port Orange, Gary of Seattle, Wash., and Robert of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Volusia/Flager County in Port Orange National Cremation Society, South Daytona, Fla., assisted the family.
Wilbur J. ‘Bill' Strong
Wilbur J. "Bill" Strong, 85, of La Crosse died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tomah, Wis.
He was born in Lansing, Iowa, on Dec. 23, 1918, to Henry and Johanna Flora (Fischer) Strong. His family later moved to La Crosse when he was 12. He married Gertrude M. Stroeh on Oct. 14, 1939, at Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman. She preceded him in death March 3, 1998.
Bill was a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Seabee during World War II. He was also a former longtime member of the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse.
Bill was an auto body repairman and owned Roy's Auto Body in the 1950s. He later worked at Cassidy's Auto Body and J&H Auto Body in La Crosse before retiring. He was also an avid race car fan.
Bill is survived by his four children, Judy (Stan) Kwarciany of Escanaba, Mich., and William J. (La Vonne) Strong Sr., Edith Marie Loyd, and Mary Catherine Strong, all of La Crosse;
15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Hopper of Washington state; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife of
59 years, he was preceded in death by eight sisters and one brother.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Robert Hundt will officiate. Burial with military rites will take place in Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church Saturday from noon until the time of services. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family.
Raymond Saxby
Raymond Saxby, 62, of Lodi and formerly of Wilton and Mauston, Wis., died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, in Madison. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kendall. Burial will be in South Ridge Lutheran Cemetery in the town of Wellington. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Friday, both at the church. Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Kendall, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Glenn ‘Paul' Streblow
Glenn "Paul" Streblow, 60, of 380 Uneeda St., died Monday, Feb. 23, 2004, at his home. He was born April 9, 1943, to Glenn E. and Beatrice Erick-son Streblow in La Crosse. He grew up on his parent's farm at Sand Lake Coulee in Onalaska, Wis. Glenn and his family moved to Fond
du Lac, Wis., in 1955, to the farm on CTH OOO. In 1962, Glenn and his father became involved with a bulk milk route. Glenn also started as a CAT operator for Semenas Brothers Construction; he then worked for Dux Brothers Construction.
He later started cash crop farming with his father until 1983, when he started hauling milk for Jim Whitty. In the 1990s, he became a truck driver for Miles Kimball until 2002. He then began work with Streblow Real Estate, driving truck and operating heavy equipment. Glenn also drove truck and operated heavy equipment for Dux LLC. He loved driving truck and was proud that he was a truck driver for more than 37 years of his life.
He found great joy in cleaning and waxing his 1952 Chevy. He also enjoyed spending time with his special friend, Judy Silski, of Omro, Wis.
Surviving is a son, Joel S. Streblow, two daughters, Paula (Jeff) Werner and Kim M. Streblow, and a granddaughter, Serena Rose Werner, all of Fond du Lac; a brother, Wesley (Rosie) Streblow of Encinitas, Calif.; and a twin sister, Beverly (Jim) Krueger of Evansville, Wis. He is further survived by a nephew, Bryan (Liz) Cassady of Belgium, and a niece, Tina R. Krueger of Cleveland, Ohio. His parents preceded him in death.
Visitation for Mr. Glenn "Paul" Streblow will be on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, from 4 to 8 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, Fond du Lac. A memorial has been established in Mr. Streblow's name.

Dorothy M. Ott
Dorothy M. Ott, 81, of La Crosse passed on to Heaven at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Hillview Health Care Center, to the waiting arms of all who knew her and had passed on before her.
She was born June 30, 1922, in La Crosse to Herman and Elizabeth (Wenzel) Schlicht.
She was employed at Auto-Lite until its closing and then worked at the Garment Co. as a floor lady. In 1970, she bought the Friendly Nabor Tavern at Ninth and Mississippi streets and renamed it Wunderbar, which she owned and operated for many years.
When Dot, as she liked to be called, retired, she often visited her son, daughter-in-law and grandson in Chicago. She was also an institution throughout La Crosse and made many friends, here and in Chicago, with her goodwill, humor and jokes, no matter how many times you heard them. She enjoyed walking in Chicago, often going from her son's house to the loop and back, a round trip of four miles.
It would be a rare day not to see her out and about enjoying life with friends at neighborhood taverns on the North and South sides of La Crosse, walking to all of them. She loved life and was a good Catholic, raising both of her boys by herself to be good Catholics. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse and was upset when "they" closed the school.
She is survived by her two sons, David (Martha) of Chicago, and Michael of La Crosse; a grandson, Gregory of Chicago; a granddaughter, Heather Thiel of La Crosse; one brother, Lester (Helen) Schlicht of La Crosse; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Willard, Raymond, Herman, Irwin, John and Kenneth; four sisters, Elizabeth Fiers, Elsie Smith, Emma Schlicht and her twin sister, Doris Payne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Feb. 27, at
11 a.m., in Leo Hall at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will follow in Catholic Cemetery. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.
