The advisory, in effect until 3 p.m. today, includes La Crosse, St. Croix, Pierce, Pepin, Buffalo, Trempealeau, Vernon, Crawford and Grant, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The DNR did not specify the source of the particles, but said the stagnant air mass that led to the advisory is expected to remain over the upper Midwest for much of the week, and more counties could be added to the advisory.
The air quality index is at the orange level, which is considered unhealthy for people with heart or lung disease, asthma, older adults and children.
People in those groups should reschedule or cut back on strenuous activities and pay attention to respiratory symptoms like coughing, wheezing and discomfort when breathing.
