Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager announced Monday her office has reached a settlement with Wisconsin Singles Inc., also known as Renaissance for Singles.
The company is headquartered in Onalaska but has offices in La Crosse and other Wisconsin cities. It will pay at least $11,624 to cover partial refunds to about 18 Wisconsin consumers who filed complaints, Lautenschlager said.
"Wisconsin consumers who use dating services are looking for companionship, not a bad relationship with a dating service," Lautenschlager said. "This settlement clarifies the rights of consumers, and refunds money to those who received a bum deal."
Consumers have complained the dating service did not advise them properly of the organization's cancellation policies, the length of time they would have to wait before receiving their first match and the terms of contract expiration, refunds and renewals, Lautenschlager said.
A company spokesman did not return a telephone call from the Tribune on Tuesday.
Under the settlement, Wisconsin Singles will instruct all of its employees to fully advise how clients can cancel memberships. The company also will require employees to provide written information about the average length of time before each match is made; the expiration of contracts, refunds and renewals; and a disclosure that some matches or referrals could be made outside the match criteria provided by the consumer.
