UW-La Crosse tied with the University of Northern Iowa for the No. 2 ranking in the Midwest among public universities that offer bachelor's and master's degrees. Last year, UW-La Crosse was ranked No. 3.
When private colleges and universities were included, UW-L and Northern Iowa ranked 19th among Midwest institutions offering up to a master's degree.
The recognition was earned for academic programs and a welcoming environment, according to UW-L Provost and Vice Chancellor Elizabeth Hitch.
UW-Madison is rated at a different level because it offers doctorate degrees. It ranked 34th among public and private universities nationwide.
"Our sense is families use the ratings as an important source of information in selecting a university," said Hitch.
The only Midwest college to rank higher in the category was Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo.
