Don’t give in to the ‘race card’
By THAD BALDWIN | La Crosse
After reading the recent stories about the four boys convicted in court and sentenced by Judge Mike Mulroy for the gang rape of a young girl, I would like to applaud Judge Mulroy for not giving in to what is becoming more and more of a huge problem in our society, the fear of the “race card.”
Once again, I am appalled by the response of what I can only assume as the tainted of our society. I am a strong believer in holding people accountable for their actions. This is what the court systems are all about. Too bad many families have fallen away from this wonderful idea.
Let’s see how this works: My child did wrong by anyone with moralistic values, so he must be held accountable.
As a parent or guardian, we should be the first line of accountability. I am disgusted by the way some people choose to raise kids by simply having them, raising them with hatred towards others and then blame everyone else for being racists when they do things that tear at what society considers unacceptable.
It just so happens in this case the judge and victim are white, and the convicted are black. So what. Why aren’t the boys judged as racists for raping a white girl? Wake up! It’s not about color, it’s about accountability. I would suggest to raise your kids with hugs and love and not hatred.
What happened to judicial branch?
By JOHN SANDERS | La Crosse
I must be wrong in remembering that the United State government has three major divisions. All my teachers must have lied to me. There is no such thing as a judicial branch of the U.S. government!
Court-ordered wire taps are now a thing of the past. Those decisions can now be made by the executive branch of the government according to President Bush.
Since when can a president so blatantly ignore the Constitution he swore to protect and not be brought up on impeachment?
Both President Nixon and President Clinton thought they were above the law, and could do whatever they wanted without any thought to their actions. Why is America letting President Bush, who admitted to usurping the Constitution willingly, to stay in power?
Wake up to the lies, America! This administration is using fear, exactly as prewar Germany used fear, to justify its immoral actions. Read the headlines of what this administration is truly doing in the name of fighting terrorists. They are destroying our constitutional rights, the basis of our democracy.
It makes me wonder if Iraq’s new leaders will learn how to manipulate their citizens with their new government as well as our leaders do in America. We didn’t bring an American democracy as a model to Iraq, we have brought American governmental corruption as the model to follow!
Christians want to be included
By AMANDA SAVIN | La Crosse
Merry Christmas, Richard Mial, in the name of Jesus Christ.
Freedom of speech allows that.
I’ll pray for you and the work that you do anywhere, anyhow I please. Freedom of religion allows that.
I’ll not use an act of Congress to force anyone into praying to my God with me. The Constitution doesn’t allow that.
It does not mean that I must be prevented at all costs from praying aloud in the name of Jesus in a park outside a government building holding a Bible verse toward a public road. If I did, it would in no way force anyone to participate with me although someone may hear and be annoyed. I find many things I can’t ignore or change offensive and annoying.
Don’t worry. I have better ways of spreading God’s Word than standing in the middle of a park looking for a snowball fight with the ACLU.
The Founding Fathers were in their own words religious themselves and endorsed religion openly. They said in their own words they did not want the government to establish one form of religion and make everyone follow it penalizing those who didn’t conform. They didn’t mean to prevent people from praying because it may “offend” someone. By their official actions they proved otherwise.
The argument on the “war on Christmas” is about the progressive removal of Christmas from the holy day (holiday) season. Christians are not asking to be the only holy day mentioned. We’re just asking to be included.
Enforce the floodplain law
By KATHERINE MARCO-MANEY | La Crosse
Recently the Tribune reported that Paul Borsheim believes they have set the bar for development with their Three River Plaza located on the Causeway. This may be so, but it would be the city that is setting the bar for floodplain management and enforcement of rules regarding building and improvements with this project.
If they allow remodeling in the Buchner Building that is not allowed by homeowners in the flood plain, this would show unequal enforcement of the rules. If a homeowner cannot tear down a wall in the flood plain, then neither should Borton Construction. If four feet of Drywall or more goes toward your 50 percent, then that rule applies for this development, too.
The city would not only be risking an increase in our rates, but removal from the flood insurance program altogether. The latter sounds good, but try and sell your home when no bank will give a loan out because flood insurance cannot be obtained.
Because the city has invested $5.4 million into this project, I am sure they are being extra careful. I mean how would it look for FEMA if the city of
La Crosse funded any development that did not completely comply with the flood plain restrictions set by them and the Department of Natural Resources?
Like our police, FEMA’s job is to enforce the rules for the protection of the people and their property. No one is above the rules.
