PRAIRIE DU SAC, Wis. — The Westby High School boys basketball team is heading to the WIAA Division 3 state tournament for the first time since 1997.
Coach Bob Constalie’s Norsemen used a big fourth quarter to roll over previously unbeaten Fennimore 57-38 this afternoon at Sauk Prairie High School. Westby (24-1) will play a Division 3 state semifinal game at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Kohl Center.
The Norsemen, the Coulee Conference champions who knocked off Aquinas in a regional final, snapped a 31-31 tie behind the strong play of Tim Larson and Tyler Aspenson.
Larson scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Aspenson — the area’s second-leading scorer during the regular season — added 17.
Westby’s 1-3-1 zone defense, coupled with some ice-cold shooting by Fennimore, allowed the Norsemen to break the game open in the fourth quarter. Fennimore did not make a field goal from the 4:21 mark of the third quarter until 33 seconds remained — a field-goal drought of 11 minutes, 58 seconds.
