Some ‘immigrants’ were not so willing
By EDWARD BARLOW / Viroqua, Wis.

Millions of “immigrants” did not come to America willingly. They were hideously dragged here in chains from Africa so that Americans could live privileged lifestyles and accumulate wealth from very cheap farm labor. The “slaves” also did jobs no one else wanted to do..

After the U.S. Constitution was implemented in 1789, there were more than 200 slave revolts. So this Memorial Day we should take a moment and remember the many slaves who rebelled and fought for freedom, democracy and family values. They were some of America’s greatest patriots and heroes. Many of them paid the ultimate price.

Some examples:

  • Virginia (1800): Gabriel Prosser and 35 other African American freedom fighters are executed by the U.S. Army. These “slaves” had fought nobly and righteously for freedom and democracy.

  • Louisiana (1811): The military puts down a “slave revolt.” More than 100 “slaves” fighting for freedom, democracy, and family values died honorably. Sixteen leaders were publicly executed.

  • South Carolina (1822): The military puts down a “slave revolt” led by Denmark Vesey. Thirty-five African-Americans fighting for freedom, democracy and family values were hanged and left hanging for several weeks.

  • Virginia (1831): Nat Turner’s “slave revolt.” More than 100 slaves fighting for freedom and democracy are killed in combat. President Andrew Jackson hangs Turner and 18 other African-American freedom fighters.

  • Fort Pillow Creek Massacre (April 1864): During the Civil War, 800 African-American U.S. soldiers are captured, then ruthlessly massacred by troops under Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the future founder of the KKK.

    And the list goes on.

    Open letter to Mike Huebsch

By J.D. WINE / Onalaska, Wis.

    Mr. Huebsch:

You recently used your powers as Assembly Majority Leader to prevent the ethics reform bill, Senate Bill 1, from being considered by the Assembly.

This bill passed the Senate by a vote of 28-5. Such a vote would seem to indicate that the bill is not radical, yet you apparently applied such pressure to members of your party that four Republican co-sponsors of the bill voted against consideration.

    Why?

Please don’t tell me that the bills on “candidate reporting” and “denial of state paid health care for campaigning state employees” are meaningful alternate ethics reform.

You have been quoted as saying you didn’t want “over regulation,” but the current Ethics Board does not have an independent budget and no prosecutorial powers — both of these deficiencies would have been remedied by SB 1. Such remedial action is hardly over-regulation.

You also indicated that the recently completed prosecutions in the election campaigning scandal are proof that the present system works and is sufficient.

As I am sure you knew, that scandal was broken by the hard work of two newspaper reporters who obtained a good deal of their evidence from an apparently scorned girlfriend of a legislator and in no way was brought about by the ethics apparatus presently in place. Is that your idea of the system working well or perhaps it is your idea of how you like the system to work?

I would appreciate a response in this medium.

    Great move on field naming

By WILLIAM WEBER / Coon Valley, Wis.

I was delighted to read your story regarding the La Crosse School Board decision to approve naming the Central High School athletic fields in honor of Corey DeGaetano.

As a past football, basketball and track participant for Central High School, I was fortunate enough to experience first-hand the many wonderful attributes that “Coach D” brought to athletes and students alike.

And now as a parent, two of my sons have also had the pleasure of being taught the game of football under the guidance of Coach D. Without question, Coach D knows the game of football. But, most important, he uses football as an instrument to teach his athletes the real meaning of hard work, fair play, dedication, loyalty, teamwork, pride, self-discipline and respect for others.

And coaching has been the vehicle he uses to teach the importance of embracing these values — values that in today’s world so many seem to overlook for the sake of self-gain. Without question he is tough, and demanding, but yet he has the ability to “connect” with the kids in a very meaningful way.

I couldn’t agree more with the comments made by Rick Weeth recently. And for every one disgruntled athlete coached by Coach D, there are 1,000 that are grateful and honored to be a past player of his.

    Don’t pardon Lay and Skilling

By DANIEL SOSHNICK / La Crosse

President Bush came out yesterday again and said that anyone who violates the law will be prosecuted. Democrats should be coming out now, asking the question: Does this mean, Mr. President, that you will not pardon Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling?

As you all know, they were found guilty on Thursday. These two guys should go to prison for the rest of their lives and be made to make attempts at restitution for their crimes. They destroyed a company and thousands of employee pensions, and shattered lives.

    The great seal massacre

By ANDREW LONDRE / La Crosse

I am a concerned student of Central High School. I am writing this letter because I feel morally obligated to do so. As you read this, there is a slaughter occurring. Not across seas, but across our border.

Our “friendly” neighbor to the north is currently the host of the largest slaughter of mammals on the face of the planet. The victims of the massacre are innocent seals, 98 percent of which are less than a few months old, who are corralled and bludgeoned to death for their fur and fat.

Seal pups are beaten or shot, both of which cause great pain. The weapon of choice is something like a large ice pick. The hunters ambush the baby seals and club them over the head once or twice. The Canadian government has actually endorsed the practice. Since 1995, their government has poured $20 million into the hunt. Their government also misrepresents what is going on.

With 11,185 commercial licenses issued in 2001, this cannot be considered a local cultural event. It’s commerce, just like any other industry. Also, it’s not that the seals are eating too many cod; it’s that the very industry that endorses the seal slaughter is horribly over fishing the area.

This is more than an animal rights violation; these are atrocities.

" I just want to say "Im not in PETA nor have I been brainwashed by them. I’ve never even seen their website. I have created all of my view points by myself. I am not in PETA because I think they can be too extreme at times. I don’t think that animals are on the same level as humans but they have there place and I think its wrong, for so many reasons, to do what is done to the baby seals and to do nothing about it." Lastly I just want to say "‘Thank you’ to all of you who have my back because there is a large number of undereducated heartless beings (as can be seen in the previous comments) in this world and its just nice to hear from the other chunk of humanity. When nations do that it is called waging war! P.S. You are fortunate to not have your job at risk by printing your name. Because of the jobs that some people hold (law enforcement, county jobs, Boy Scouts, Church, etc.) stating what you believe can get you "black listed" and eventually fired (although something else would be used). How far back do you want to go here. Oh, and tell me, Mr. know-everything-about-everything - where did the Mexicans come from? I have friends of all colors and am sick and tired of society not letting them move forward, because they want to. And there are opinions from both sides that are way in left field. "

Regarding your second dramatic scene....I don't think me or my wife would ever be in a position where such a thing would occur. " Andrew: While I support the rights of animals to be respected and treated respectfully, to call what is being done to baby seals a 'massacre' and 'atrocities' seems to put them on the same level as people, and there are still human beings being massacred across the globe. I agree that what is being done to these animals is wrong and that we should respect the earth's creatures, but the massacre of human beings is much more urgent than the slaughter of animals. After seeing your words I thought of WWII and Darfur, not baby seals. "

PETA supports organizations on the domestic terrorist watch list, and we INVITE them into our schools. PETA supports organizations on the domestic terrorist watch list, and millions of Americans donate millions of dollars to PETA each year. I suggest we police our own before we try to police the rest of the world. "

Memorial Day was to celebrate those who died so that we might enjoy this type of freedom. This is the only country I know that has been so generous as to give its time and monies to almost EVERY nation in need, even years after we fought them off so that we might have freedom from their intentions to dominate us. GOD BLESS THE USA! "

" In response to the reader comment above: Andrew Londre is right about the massacre of seals. This is not "hunting". The baby seals are out in the open on the ice by the hundreds, and are then clubbed and kicked-sometimes even being skinned while still conscious. There's no reason at all for this to be done. Read Paul Watson's book "seal wars" for an in-depth look at the reality of what happens at these "hunts" "

" This seal thing is not "hunt." Sort of like the old joke about calf hunting: first, get a big hammer...It is quite a cruel and bloody event - using clubs instead of bullets so they don't damage the pelt. Maybe strangulation would be even better? One interesting side note: global warming is thinning the ice to the point where many seal pups drown. Canada is even considering lowering the number of seal hunt permits because so many pups drown. Irony - in a way we are all their killers. "

" On this Memorial Day we should remember ALL who gave their lives while serving in the Armed forces. Your article, while probably true, actually creates division rather then unity. The "between the lines" message is that either Americans don't recognize that slavery in America was a deplorable institution, or that Americans don't recognize the service contributions of "non-White" service members. As a former service member, I see your article as an attempt to hijack a solemn day, and that is unnecessary. "

(Another Coulee Region school district close to La Crosse is famous for doing this -- and of course, the person honored is always a man, never a woman.) Such behavior by school districts is largely political, plain and simple. Then again, I have to admit, one of my favorite teachers also happened to be a coach -- and when he retired, something was named for him. "
