Democratic convention: Kind, challenger make their cases

.
Chip DeNure was added to the speaker’s list at the last minute Saturday at the state Democratic convention at the La Crosse Center.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Joe Wineke said DeNure was a late addition because the party did not know DeNure had declared his candidacy until Friday.
DeNure addressed delegates after lunch, when the crowd had thinned considerably, while incumbent 3rd District U.S. Rep. Ron Kind spoke Saturday morning to a larger group.

DeNure said he still needs to gather 1,000 signatures to get on the ballot but plans to be ready to challenge Kind in the Sept. 12 party primary.

Besides reiterating his call for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of the year and blasting Kind for voting to keep troops in Iraq until victory has been achieved, DeNure said he would campaign for a single-payer healthcare system so employers can pay workers a higher wage. He’d provide more money for education by slashing the military budget.

Kind did not mention DeNure in his speech but said afterward he knows his opponent is passionate about some issues and looks forward to a “nice debate about where we go from here as a nation.”

“I would never discourage anyone from running for office,” Kind said. “It’s a heck of an experience, but if someone feels it is important for their voice to be heard, if they have some new ideas, then I encourage that for anyone.”

Kind told delegates his platform includes fiscal responsibility, energy independence, affordable health care and honest leadership.

“If I work hard and do an honest job and stay connected and accessible to the people back home in Wisconsin, the elections will take care of themselves,” he said after his speech.

" I think we need to get Kind, Kohl, Huebsch, and all of them out. Start with new people who will not be puppets. Have you ever REALLY stopped to listen to the representatives when they are asked a question? Most of the time they don't even give a straight answer. Just gibberish that sounds like it was rehearsed. We need new blood but not Chip Denure! "

" Silly lib. . .Go back to speeches given by Bush (our GREAT LEADER) and Co. and they ALL say that this isnt a war like we have seen before. There is no black and white, we, the USA and Great Britain, are hunting down TERRORISTS in EVERY country, even their own. Perhaps you should actually know the news before you post on here. Silly lib. As your favorite president JFK said, "we will bear any burden, pay any price"....so much for his great ideas and thoughts huh you sill libs? "

" You missed my point entirely. If this is "standard journalism," then it is anti-American. Giving more credence, coverage, whatever you call it, to the incumbent, undoubtedly gives him/her an advantage. The press should LEVEL the playing field so that newcomers have a chance. "

" Isn't it nice to see that Chip is good enough to carry the water for the liberal-wackos here in LaCrosse who want to stop a vitally needed North-South highway but when he wants to do a little more they throw him off the bus. "

Kind = Proxmire Democrat. wrote on Jun 12, 2006 6:53 AM:

" The problem is, Proxmire is dead, and we don't have any good centrist conservative candidates. Proxmire would rollover in his grave to see what Kind and the Democratic party have become. "

" Ron Kind is a jerk. If you'd ever met him, you'd know. He is only supporting the war to play politics and stand out as a democrat. No one in their right mind would support this war until it's victory. What are we even doing in Iraq anyway? Who is the enemy? This isn't a black and white war with a clear winner and loser. This war is a tragedy effecting our friends in the armed forces and the citizens of Iraq. We should be supporting a candidate who has a plan to end the occupation and get Iraq's government up and running as soon as possible so our friends, family, and neighbors can come home. "

" There are only two reasons to support Kind. 1. You are a farmer and want all those cheap illegal workers (Kind supports this). 2. You are a welfare recipient, and love the fact that Kind keeps giving you my tax money. "

" Veterans were spat upon? Jerry Lembcke,Vietnam Veteran Against the War and author, states by "early April, stories were circulating in several US cities about uniformed military personnel being spat on. In Asheville, North Carolina, two Marines were rumored to have been spat upon, while in Spokane, Washington, a threat to "spit on the troops when they return from Iraq" was reportedly issued. Upon further investigation, none of the stories panned out — the Spokane "threat" stemmed from the misreading of a letter promising that opponents of the war would not spit on returning soldiers — in each case the rumors were used to stoke pro-war rallies. Some people argue against Chip Denure's right to ask questions. Chip participates in the Democratic Process, it is the right of every citizen to ask questions. If Chip Denure was a nut case would he be a probation officer? "

Jason wrote on Jun 11, 2006 1:34 PM:

" I ask anyone who is considering to vote for Mr. Denure to do a little research before making such a dire mistake. All it takes is to read a few of his past letters to the editor and you will catch a small glimpse of his obsessive beliefs. "

Why not a debate? It would be great for the public! wrote on Jun 11, 2006 1:10 PM:

" Mr. Kind has the right attitude about Mr. DeNure's candidacy- let everyone with a passion for the issues air them before the public by seeking office. That's how democracy is supposed to work. I wonder if Mr. Kind would be willing to put his actions behind his words by particpating in a pre-primary open forum with Mr. DeNure and Mr. Nelson, the Republican candidate? How about the Tribune sponsoring one with Ch 8 or 19? The public could then see for themselves if Chip is a serious man and Mr. Kind could explain once and for all his position on Iraq without any paid PR staffers speaking for him. "

50 people witnessed why Chip is NOT the best candidate.. wrote on Jun 11, 2006 12:29 PM:

" Good luck to Chip, but his speech and his ideas speak for themselves. Chip has some good ideas of healthcare and education but he cant challenge Rep. Kind on education. Ron Kind is one of the best, if not the best congressman in the country when it comes to keeping our nation educated and getting the right tools to educate them. The democratic party should be looking at ways to elect new members to state offices. The far left complains about Bush, this is the reason republicans keep winning, the far left isn't about compromise and cooperation. Like it or not, its a two party system, and if we don't get under one big tent, our country will stay on this same course. Lets stand together. Im standing with Rep. Ron Kind. "

Kind has alot to answer to.... wrote on Jun 11, 2006 11:59 AM:

" Kind CO-SPONORED the Republican led, credit-card industry crafted, Bankruptcy reform bill.....making it impossible for little guys to file bankruptcy, but still leaving it easy for rich cats to file. Kind is also a day late and a dollar short on Iraq.....Kind seems timid and gutless on the subject and he enthusiastically supports the current failed policy. Good luck Chip.- Brian G Smith "

" The best argument you can present is to criticize people on their spelling? And I don't believe the poster meant to claim they were Denure, I think it was meant to be a title. "

To: Kind & Challenger wrote on Jun 11, 2006 11:16 AM:

" Of course the paper will title the article "Kind, Challenger..." I wouldn't consider that an endorsement. They simply followed basic rules of journalism by focusing on the interesting fact that Ron Kind, an incumbent Member of Congress, has a challenger. You know, like Aaron Rodgers might try to "challenge" Brett Farve, 3-time MVP, for the starting quarterback position, which Farve has had for eons. They wouldn't write, "Farve, Rodgers challenge each other." "

" Um....... Chipper......... yeah.......... stick to berating felons and carreer misdemeanor offenders like the person posting as you who can't spell "sane." They're more your speed, easily influenced, and have no mind of their own. Oh wait.....that's you. Sorry. Seriously though, just stick to La Crosse. You entertain most, irritate some, and are largely ignored in general. "

" Chip DeNure vs. Ron Kind? Does Chip even know that the district is larger than liberal La Crosse? Chip, leave the governing to actual leaders like Kind. We're proud of our congressman around here and hope to have him representing us for many, many years. "

Kind & Challenger wrote on Jun 11, 2006 8:37 AM:

" Alphabetically, DeNure come before Kind. I guess we know who the paper supports. Congratulations Tribune editors, you just gave my vote to the little guy. Go Chip! "

Denure wrote on Jun 11, 2006 3:37 AM:

" Denure might be a nut, but he is more sain than Kind. Chip you got my vote!!! "
