Make sure Wisconsin students have access to higher education

.
University of Wisconsin officials need to make a greater effort to ensure that Wisconsin students have access to public higher education.

And legislators, who have subjected the University of Wisconsin System to tougher budget cuts than many other state agencies, need to loosen up on the purse strings enough to allow for greater access to UW campuses.
Some legislators have been more open to budget cuts because of things they disagree with that have happened on the Madison campus. Yet their actions punish all campuses — including the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse — and they have the effect of making it a little more difficult for Wisconsin students to go to college.

The real point is that, in their anger at the UW System and Madison, legislators are punishing young people who need a degree, and whose education will help improve our state’s economic future.

What can be done?

At the local level, UW-L has asked the Board of Regents for approval to set its own tuition rates in an effort to allow for more students to attend. The target student population is about 10,000 during the next decade. That is about 1,000 more than now attend.

One faculty member expressed concerns in a letter to the editor recently that more students may not be conducive to good learning, but if there are enough faculty members and support to handle the increase, what would be the damage. There certainly is demand for what UW-L offers.

At the state level, a recent story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel told about Wisconsin residents losing out to out-of-state residents with lower qualifications — because the out-of-state students pay much more in tuition.

It’s true that out-of-state students allow for greater diversity on campus, which can mean a richer college experience for all. But we need to be fair, and we need to make sure that state residents have priority access to higher education.

That’s where the Legislature can and should help. Legislators need to rethink their approach to the UW System and state to restore some of the funding that has been lost. They need to think about the need to educate and then keep those students in Wisconsin, where they can contribute to the economy.

Most of all, they need to think of higher education as an investment in our state’s future.

" I love folks who complain with their mouths full. This morning you were awakened by an alarm clock, powereded by electricity that was subsidized by the government. You were cooled by dirty energy subsidized by taxpayers. Got into your vehicle and drove down a road you could never pay for by yourself, entered a bldg where you work that was given tax breaks, and proceeded to make a living. And all the time your home was being protected by the subsidized police and fire departments. Let's just hope that on your way home you don't need to go to the subsidized hospital. Trillions of debt, whether it be Federal or State is a reality in this country. You and all us are "WELFARE QUEENS". We live in a country that brags about its free markets, but would not survive a week without socialized support. "

" With respect, it's your head that's in the sand as we "have people in La Crosse with Master's degrees bartending"-a quote from a university career counselor to me. An education is ONLY a piece of paper unless it leads to something of consequence, period. I don't care if UWL adds another 10,000 to enrollment. It means NOTHING if 95% drop out after 1-2 years, or graduate with WORTHLESS degrees after the school fails to advise against an unfavorable degree route. Graduates only contribute to the tax base IF a large portion have meaningfull opportunities. Otherwise they are persecuted for not achieving anything. My advise is to CUT fat in the university system and channel that fat into areas that WILL provide jobs, otherwise "education for educations sake" breeds nothing more than bitterness and frustration for the graduate. " First of all, I have a degree. I was told throughout my grade school and high school years that if I could get a college degree, I would be successful in life. I feel I am successful in life, but I qualify that by telling you that I work on a fairly high paying technical field. To do what I do does not take a college degree - it takes a solid footing and an education from a technical (read: two year) college. Apprenticeship programs abound. Plumbers make more than a comfortable living. Electricians generally do pretty well also. The bottom line is: There are alternatives to a college degree. Take an aptitude test in high school and go into the field that best suits you. "

" Get your head out of the sand. The more people with higher degrees (and I include tech. schools with universities and colleges), the better off YOU are in the long run. By the bye, I'm footing 100% of the bill for my Master's degree. I can afford to. Why? Because I have a Bachelor's degree, and not just a high school diploma. Yes, I worked during the first trip through college, but I also had Pell grants and work-study to help. The return on that investment? I'm contributing one *heck* of a lot more to the tax-base than I would have without that degree. Unless your math skills are as poor as your writing, I suggest you do some simple economic math and adjust your attitude accordingly. "

" Your letter is ignorant crap...it is so far off base it doesn't really deserve a reply. Sounds like you've got a real chip on your shoulder. I'd be interested to know exactly what "higher education" you have--sounds like about 6th grade although I know many 6th graders that have more common sense than you! "

" Diversity, This word needs to be pulled from out dictionary...It's over used and just crap from the so called "HIGHER EDUCATION" people Anyone can get loans to go to school. and it's about time the students pay there way instead of the damn taxpayers footing the bill No one buys me a new car or a new house, and NO PAID FOR MY "HIGHER EDUCATION" so students quit whinning and get it done yourself this is all about money and votes, the democraps pandering to the students and the personnel to get there votes "

" Fair? Representation in UW Schools as measured by diversity is greatly lacking in our classrooms. While Veterans, athletes, and students with musical or abilities find it easier to gain access, STUDENTS FROM LOW INCOME and FIRST GENERATION FAMILIES do not! The proposed plan to raise tuition for those who can most afford it, would indeed give new opportunities to those who would benefit greatly from the additional financial aid. The proposed plan would not only provide greater access to out-of-state students, but would provide higher levels of aid for our own students who need it most. In short, this is a win-win situation for WI, for a diverse student body, and for low-income, first generation students. "
