Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Honors H.E.R.O.E.S.

Franciscan Skemp Healthcare recently honored two employees with H.E.R.O.E.S. awards. H.E.R.O.E.S., Honoring Employees with Recognition for Outstanding Extracurricular Service, honors an employee for his or her volunteer efforts to help individuals, organizations or causes in the community. Each H.E.R.O. receives an award and a monetary gift that is donated to the organization of his or her choice.

The April H.E.R.O. was Jason Wellert, Delivery Technician in Home Medical Equipment at the La Crosse campus. Jason is active in his church's Christian Big Brother program, which allows him to spend time with an eleven-year-old boy who has bipolar. Jason invites his "brother" to eat dinner with his family, play basketball, watch video games and lift weights. Jason includes his "brother" in his family activities because he thinks it's important for him to know he's part of something special. In the past, Jason has also been committed to his younger brother. Two years after Jason graduated from high school, in 1997, Jason welcomed his brother into his home. He lived with Jason and his wife Lori for four years, and has since graduated from high school and is currently living and working in the community. Jason's decision to join the Christian Big Brother program and to help out his own brother was influenced by his maternal grandfather who taught him the value of hard work, appreciating life and patience. For the first time in eight years, a department was honored as a H.E.R.O. The June H.E.R.O. was awarded to Information Services employees, who were chosen in recognition of their consistent efforts to support an individual, an organization or a cause. The department has an Employee Teamwork and Collaboration, which is a committee that meets regularly to come up with projects that involve everyone in their department. In 2000, the department formed "Sponsor a Family." which is a project that provides Christmas gifts for needy families. I.S. has since sponsored many families, and to raise money for these gifts, I.S. employees host a perennial plant sale/auction and bake sale each May. In April, I.S. staff members prepared a $5 lunch for Franciscan Skemp employees to raise money for former I.S. employee Jon Severson, whose cancer led to an early retirement. The lunch and additional donations from staff in other departments raised more than $3,400 to fund a trip to Disney World for Jon. Some I.S. staff members also planted Jon's garden at his home. When the department's pledge to the Medical Excellence Campaign was completed with "Jeans Day" money, the staff agreed to pledge $5,000 during the next three years to the Oasis Fund for Cancer Patient Support within Franciscan Skemp Foundation. Through the years, the department has also financially supported A Place of Grace, Safe Path, Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army, La Crosse Area Needs Closet and the Franciscan Skemp/Diocese of La Crosse Medical Missions. Currently, they are planning an activity to support nursing home residents.
