DeSales Curti, FSPA, Retires After 51 Years of Service to Franciscan Skemp
DeSales Curti, FSPA, retired from the Pharmacy Department at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare on August 11, 2006 following 51 years of service to patients and the greater community. As a pharmacist Sr. DeSales followed in the legacy started at (then) St. Francis Hospital by Sr. Mathilda Lang, FSPA, who in 1886 was widely considered to be Wisconsin's first hospital-based registered pharmacist. A native of Genoa, Wisconsin, DeSales Curti graduated from Aquinas High School in La Crosse in 1947. She attended the (then) La Crosse State College (now UW-La Crosse) and was a teacher for three years. In 1952 DeSales Curti entered the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration community and professed her first vows in 1955. Also on August 12 of that year she joined the staff at St. Francis Hospital (now Franciscan Skemp Healthcare) as a pharmacy aide. In 1959 she graduated with distinction from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy. In June of that year she was promoted to
staff pharmacist at St. Francis and became a registered pharmacist on September 16, 1960. She professed her final vows to the Franciscan Sisters in 1961. On July 15, 1965, Sr. DeSales was named Chief Pharmacist and held that position until November 1972. She then returned to her role as staff pharmacist and held that position until her retirement on August 11 of this year. She remains a member of the "pool" pharmacy staff for Franciscan Skemp. Additionally, when the (then) Franciscan Health System acquired St. Joseph Hospital in Arcadia, Wisconsin, in 1983 she provided pharmacy services to that facility until earlier this year. As an example of her commitment to the under served members of the community, Sr. DeSales has been a volunteer in the pharmacy at the St. Clare Health Mission since its establishment in 1993. A retirement reception honoring Sr. DeSales will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2006 in Marycrest Auditorium, 2nd Floor, St. Francis Building, Franciscan Skemp La Crosse
Campus, 700 West Avenue South.
