Pagan student club created at UW-Waukesha

.
WAUKESHA — A Pagan Student Alliance club has been organized at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha as Halloween approaches.

It was officially recognized by the student government about two weeks ago and its approximately one dozen members hope to promote understanding of paganism through public information efforts and demonstrations.
“We’re coming out of the broom closet,” said Amber Braun, 20, of Waukesha, who is president of the group.

“We’re not trying to preach, and we’re not trying to convert,” she said.

Braun, who describes herself as a witch, said she plans to request about $1,500 in student fee funding.

David Weber, faculty adviser to the Campus Crusade for Christ, said that, although he disagrees with pagan philosophy, he has no objection to having the new club on campus.

“Hopefully we’re always searching for truth,” he said. “Sometimes people have their own way of finding the truth.”

Sue Kalinka, the school’s associate director of student services, said the formation of the club was an opportunity for students to be exposed to new ideas.

Student government president Alan Stager said he instructed club leaders to notify him if they experience hostility or discrimination on campus.

“Abolish the ignorance,” Stager said.

I can't be classified as anything other then 'pagan.' But what most people forget is what pagan means. Pagan is just another way of classfying people that believe in something other then the Christian God. It's written in the dictionary, so techincally it isn't just 'wiccans' that are pagan, it's the islamic people, its the catholic people because of worshiping the Virgin Mary, it's the hindu, the buddist, and the list goes on. -=[ continued in next post ]=- "

Again, everyone has their own thoughts and beliefs. -=[ continued in next post ]=- "

" I am pleased that there is at least one group of people that are willing to step forward and try to get people to understand what pagans really are. I have my own beliefs, as do the rest of everyone in the world, but nothing is never really the same. We all may share the same beliefs, but there is also the fact that each and every person believes in something different. They might be Christians and believe in something, but not all Christians believe in the same thing. There is always something off. I say have one person talk to two of any religion, weither it's Christian, Catholic, Wiccan or Islamic, and have them share their views and beliefs. There is always going to be something different. -=[ continue in next post ]=- "

" First of all, I see a lot of people here commenting on our use of tax dollars...SUFAC, which is where all club funding comes from, is a small portion of student tuition that goes towards funding student life and activities on campus. Second, we have not yet submitted a budget request, nor do we even plan to do so. We have no problem with being a self-sufficient group (although, the CCC requested $1,700 and I've seen no complaints about that). "

" Only a couple more years and Odin worship will be established at colleges across Wisconsin. Of course, I suspect this paganism is fuzzy-bunny wiccanism and not the real thing, but it will be. It will be. It is already being revived by white male prisoners in prisons across America. We will soon see a paganism that is truer to the exterminating genocidal and enslaving traditions of the Danes, the Icelanders and the Vikings. Blood-lust, blood-sacrifice and berzerker values taught by the whitest of the white in torchlight deep in the sacred groves. By God it is wonderful that the Aryan tribes are shaking off the mental colonization of Christianity and worshipping their true Gods at last. It is the Battle of the Frigidus and Battle of the Milvian Bridge all over again, but this time Theodosius and Constantine have surrendered! "

The truth is this, we can feel any way we want yet it does not mean it is truth. I can "feel" like I can fly yet the law of gravity begs to differ. I base my pursuit of truth on what I can trust, on what has been slandered for hundreds of years, yet still rises above all else. It has been burned, torn, stripped from the minds of nations and cultures has been outlawed and maligned but still shows the way to the greatest freedom we could ever hope to find...The Word of God-Witchcraft is a sin, I don't hate or dis-like the Wiccan but I detest the practice "

Well, I am afraid that just shows the lack of knowledge one would hope to gain from a school of higher learning. The Romans wrote that when they invaded Britain... the pagan religion there consisted mostly of stuffing people into giant wicker men and burning them alive. That "deserves respect"? "

" Chuck, you can disagree with another religion without being ignorant. On the other hand, as we live in country wherein we possess both freedom of religion and freedom of assembly attempting to deny those freedoms to your fellow citizens does come across as bit ignorant of the law if nothing else. I really fail to see why this is even a newsworthy story. That a recognized religion forms a on-campus club shouldn't really be anything noteworthy. Christian students form clubs. Jewish students form clubs. Buddhist students form clubs. etc. etc. There's really nothing special here. "

" I have a real problem with this. When Christians are on a mission to be outspoken they are usually ridiculed. But when people want to spread howash, it's okay. I guess that what happens when you try and spread the truth(gospel), huh, you're suppressed. From the beginning the pagans have always been washed out. This won't last but it hurts to see a pagan club in a Christian nation. How far have we come? How far will we go? Where do we draw the line? God, 'forgive them for they know not what they do." "

Cathy wrote on Oct 24, 2006 3:19 PM:

" Pagan student groups are available on-campus at most universities in the US. This is nothing new or earth-shattering. Pagans have the same rights as all other religions in the United States. And if the Campus Crusade for Christ is getting tax dollars, so should the Pagan student group. Many of the comments above are hateful and un-Christ like. I don't blame people for turning away from Chrisitanity if that is an example of what they are spewing. Although Jews considered Samaritans Pagans, Jesus loved them, as he loved EVERYONE. Perhaps if Christians acted in a more Christ-like fashion, there would be no need for new-age religious movements like Wicca and other Pagan religons. "

" One reader commented "I wonder if they would allow a Christian club to be established on campus?" In response to that, I wanted to point out that the article states there is a Christian club on campus: Campus Crusade for Christ. As far as why a club is necessary if they aren't planning on converting people, it's really simple. They wish to let the other students know who they are so they aren't hated the second someone finds out that they aren't Christian. It also offers a place for Pagans to socialize with each other, considering they don't usually gather as often as Christians do. So long as no laws are violated, I think any religion, Christian or otherwise, should be able to voice their views. That's the joy of Freedom of Speech. "

If taxpayers are offended that pagans can have tax funds, then they should demand that ALL campus religious groups NOT receive tax funds. It's pretty simple, really. "
