Four local events offer talks on global warming

.
It might be because of the mild winter. It might be because of Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” Whatever the reason, the global warming debate is heating up in the Coulee Region — at least four events centered on the topic are scheduled for this week.

“There’s just this convergence,” said Coulee Region Sierra Club member Barb Frank. “People are concerned.”
Thursday night, the Sierra Club will brainstorm ideas for a regional campaign to stop global warming, and the public is invited to join the conversation. “We want to see that our city and neighboring communities are doing what they can,” Frank said.

Like Frank, Cathy Van Maren of the Coulee Region Progressives wants to educate people. She helped organize “Global Warming Isn’t Cool: What are You Going to Do About it?,” which will be held Friday night at the Concordia Ballroom. The program features a keynote address by Tia Nelson, daughter of Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day.

“I wanted to (hold the event) because I have a 14-year old, and I’d kind of like her to have a good place to live,” Van Maren said.

About 15 or 20 local activists, organizations and businesses will each have a display table, teaching participants about energy reduction, sustainable construction and transportation alternatives, to name a few.

“The (goal) is to have people come and say, ‘What can I do this month or this year to change my habits and reduce my carbon footprint?,’” Van Maren said.

Friday’s event also includes dinner and a DJ.

Over in Galesville, some local women have organized a community forum to discuss sustainability, slated for Tuesday night at the Galesville Public Library. They’ll discuss one method in detail: the Natural Step program, which is used in Sweden.

In Winona, Minn., on Thursday night, arctic explorer Will Steger will present “Eye Witness to Global Warming,” a multimedia presentation.

“I think the consciousness has been growing,” Sierra Club member Barb Frank said about the number of events planned this week. “I feel very optimistic about what we’re going to accomplish in the next year.”

" A panel of 600 scientists, reviewed by another 600 scientists says that global warming is already here and presents overwhelming evidence. So there, deniers. Care to refute the evidence? "

" Opinion and signatures on petitions are not science. To repeat what other posters here have said, there is no disagreement in peer-reviewed scientific studies over whether humans are at least partially to blame for increases in CO2 levels and their effect on the environment. Please, if you have some evidence to the contrary that actually follows the scientific method and is peer-reviewed, share it with the world. We're waiting. "

It would be interesting if the Tribune could track their IP addresses and see if the messages trace back to servers operated by Exxon Mobil or one of their "think tanks". "

" I disagree with your entire premise. I believe it is YOU who are living in fear--fear of having to change your lifestyle, fear of realizing the truth that you have destroyed the climate for generations to come. To reiterate what other poster have said--THERE IS NO LEGITIMATE SCIENCE THAT DOUBTS GLOBAL WARMING IS CAUSED BY HUMANS. How is it possible that humans with such astonomical egos can assume they can overpopulate the planet and consume resources with no environmental penalty? One need not look very far afield or back in time to see entire civilzations that collapsed based on such hubris. "

The antarctic ice is disappearing. Mt. Kilamanjaro has no glacier any more. GLacier Park is losing its glaciers rapidly. GLacier Bay AK isn't. Ski lifts in the Alps no longer reach the snow fields. But it is not local climate records that determine whether or not global climate change is occurring. Look up the temperature records - you will find that the record lows trend toward many years ago and the record highs trend tgoward the last 15 years. This year saw the record for the latest date of subzero weather for many communities in the Midwest. Denial is not just a river in Egypt. "

" I'm a huge fan of capitalism. As a matter of fact I run my own small business. The laughable idea that concern over detroying the planet is anti-capitalist just shocks me in its utter stupidity. First of all, the need for change opens up all kinds of opportunities for entrepreneurship. Secondly the alternative, allowing the destruction of the climate, is about as anti-capitalist and anti-human as you can get. Third, these polluting industries got where they are today with government help, through direct action (subisdies, etc.) or inaction (failure to regulate). Get real Billy. "

Otherwise just shut up. "

How is it possible that we humans with our astronomical ego's believe that we can impact the climate in a short period of time in either a positive or negative manner, and in whose favor? Manner of the changes that have occurred over this time have resulted in species adapting to the changes and surviving if not thriving. Do not let the hypersensitive critics of our way of life scare us into making changes based on fear alone. To those of you who have the chicken little mentality to believe every popular theory of human based destruction think about it with your head instead of your heart. "

eyes wide shut wrote on Jan 22, 2007 1:30 PM:

" Concerning this type of issue there is a lot of clouded thinking and personal belief involved. One of the biggest misunderstandings is that there IS scientific consensus concerning global warming (the earth is getting warming) and its causes (not just sun cycles--mankind has its influence on the climate). For more info realclimate.org is a good starting place (blogs by respectable climatologists and balanced, science-based discussion). Unfortunately, America's clouded thinking on this issue is severely affecting the prospects for the sustainability of human life on this planet. "We're not scaremongering / this is really happening": we are running out of time, but it's nice to see some efforts, even if humble, starting in the La Crosse area. "

Billy Shields: The Usual Suspects wrote on Jan 22, 2007 1:28 PM:

" The man-made "global warming" myth is merely a cover for anti-capitalism. First, look at the groups, "Sierra Club," "progressives," and "sustainability." All anti-capitalist cover/coded words. Remember how they tried to interrupt World Bank and G7 meetings. After the public grew tired of those temper tantrums, they decided to jump on the global warming bandwagon. (Which was formerly the coming Ice Age crowd back in the 70's.) Further evidence is in the comments posted on the blog here from seminar bloggers. The man-made "Global Warming" crowd has little to do with science and everything to do with politics. "

" I agree. We often hear or read of solutions that the government needs to initiate, but we as individuals need to take responsibility also (using less fossil fuel such as walking or biking to work/school, consuming less and recycling more, etc). My guess is that those who deny that global warming is a problem are basicaly lazy and have no motivation to try and change themselves. Even if they are right we dont lose anything in trying to initiate some of the solutions. If they are wrong and nothing is done we and our offspring will suffer. Why the controversy and denial? "

Junk science? wrote on Jan 22, 2007 10:09 AM:

I don't see any of you naysayers posting any studies or facts to back up your point of view. (or credentials for that matter) "

" Calling this "junk science" is exactly what the propagandists from Exxon Mobil want and are getting paid mightily for. There is NO question among respectable, peer-reviewed scientists on this question desipte what these sheep say. Al Gore's movie is just a popular version of that science and should be required viewing for everyone. We also need to question the motivation and/or sanity of people like "lying liars..." who continue to deny the obvious. The rest of us should continue to work to stop the trend toward a global meltdown. "

If anyone pays attention to climatology, or even the weather on the local news, you will see warming and cooling trends over the broad span of time. Currently we're in a cycle the sun is giving off more energy than usual, under water magna activity at a near all-time high and finally, earth is in a wobble cycle taking it closer to the sun. Greenhouse gases? Nah. Just nature. "

Establish car pool coordinators and designate car pool parking areas close to entrances, work with the city to get bus ride discount passes for employees, low enerty "green" construction in new buildings - that could also be a role for area governments. It is all about figuring out ways to change our habits by rewarding "good" environmental behavior and making "bad" behavior inconvenient. "

Mikey again wrote on Jan 22, 2007 6:30 AM:

Better ideas for park and ride bus service - rush hour express buses from the mall and Shelby to major workplace stops like FSMC/Viterbo/Gundersen, WTC/UW-L/downtown, etc. Car pool lanes on 16 and 35 and designated car pool parking. Bus service that does not take virtually everyone downtown to transfer: e.g., east-west and north-south bus routes on major streets. Painted bike lanes on streets. "

Mark Jones wrote on Jan 22, 2007 5:06 AM:

" What are we going to do . . . about global warming? . . . perhaps we can do much, but humans will have no effect on reversing its effects. Just as humans have had little (if anything) to do with recent measured increases of a warming atmosphere, we do not have the power to counteract the effects of the solar cycle, wobbles in the Earth's rotation or perturbations in our orbit around the sun. These factors are far stronger in changing climate than anything we do or even can do. Meanwhile, when is the pot-luck dinner going to be held where we can discuss changing tectonics, otherwise known (inaccurately) as continental drift? "
