But don’t tell Blossom.
She is equipped with the entire package and isn’t afraid to “strut her stuff.”
On Monday and Tuesday, the basset hound — also known as Rebec’s Kiss Me Kate — will compete in the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.
Becky Pomeroy of West Salem will
be at Madison Square Garden to root for the dog with a sweet face and “people magnet” personality that she and
husband Reed bred from Rebec’s Kiss-n-Tell and the late Rebec’s Fuzzy Navel ROM, CGC.
“Blossom has been one of the top 10 bassets in the country for the last four years,” Pomeroy said.
Blossom’s owner, Sukey Shor of Pacific Palisades, Calif., invited Pomeroy to the event that will mark the end of Blossom’s show career.
“She’s due in season so her next foray will be as a momma,” Pomeroy said.
The Pomeroys have bred and raised basset hounds under the name Rebec’s Bassets since 1981. Most of their offspring have gone to small breeders or owner/handlers.
“It has been a real plus for her (Blossom) to do some things that other dogs we’ve (bred) haven’t been able to do,” Pomeroy said.
The Pomeroys got their first basset when a family member was sent to Turkey and left Samantha behind. There was an instant connection, and the Pomeroys began taking the pooch “with a low center of gravity” to obedience classes and eventually to shows.
Samantha became a champion, and the Pomeroys decided to have a litter of puppies.
Twenty-five years later, Rebec’s Bassets has produced more than 40 champions and too many litters to count.
“We try not to produce a large number of dogs,” Pomeroy said. “Our main purpose in breeding is to replace our own stock so that we always have some to show.”
