Dude the dog saves owner from bear but dies in attack

.
CATARACT, Wis. — Without Dude, Jason Schindler said he wouldn’t be alive.

The 27-year-old Cataract man said Dude, his 8-year-old mixed-breed hound, jumped between Schindler and an attacking black bear Thursday night and into the bear’s grasp.
It spared his owner but ultimately cost Dude his life after he was dragged to the bear’s den, sustaining at least 28 puncture wounds to his chest and neck that hours of emergency surgery by Debbie Padilla at the Sparta Veterinary Clinic couldn’t fix.

“I’d hate for someone else’s dog to go through what mine did,” Schindler said. He and his wife, Kimberly, buried the dog in a blanket and pillow outside his parent’s house in Sparta Friday, using a rented jackhammer to dig the grave in the frozen soil.

Dude’s act of heroism gave Schindler’s daughter, Emiley, 4, a new appreciation for the canine.

“We always called him a ‘dumb dog’ because he did some pretty weird things,” Schindler said. “But tonight Emiley said, ‘I love that dumb dog.’”

Schindler said he heard Dude yelping loudly Thursday after dark at the family’s rental estate, on about 600 acres in rural Cataract. He figured he had treed a coon, so he went out with a spotlight and a .22. Shortly thereafter, his spotlight died, but he kept walking in the dark toward the dog’s impassioned yelps.

He finally caught up to him beside a pile of downed trees. He peeked his head around, Schindler said, and “all I saw was this dark thing lunging at me” in the night. Dude, at his side, jumped between the two and was quickly snatched up in the bear’s jaw.

“If not for the dog, I wouldn’t be standing here,” Schindler said.

The bear, estimated by a Department of Natural Resources official who visited Friday to be between 400 and 500 pounds, dragged the dog to his nearby den, about four feet deep and under a thicket of downed trees.

Schindler returned to his house, he said, and grabbed a working spotlight and a .30-30. He returned to the scene, where the bear again lunged at him. He fired his rifle, possibly hitting his target, before the bear fled into the woods. He rescued his dog, gushing blood but breathing, and rushed him to the veterinary hospital.

Schindler had never seen a bear on the property. The DNR official said the bear may have been confused into coming partially out of hibernation by the unseasonably warm midweek weather, and the dog’s loud barking may have been an unwelcome alarm clock. The official said there’s one other known black bear in the Cataract area.

Schindler said it concludes an uncanny life for Dude. He was the last of a litter of puppies available at the Monroe County Animal Shelter when Schindler found him eight years ago and adopted him the next day. Another week in the shelter and he would have been euthanized, Schindler said.

“I saw him lying there alone in his cage and I felt so bad for him,” he said. “In a way he was a miracle dog.”

" Talking about dramatic events. What a miracle it was to adopt Dude from the humane Society. I'm sure some day you'll be reunited with Dude in heaven. Your pretty brave and courageous to go after that bear yet alone in the dark. I pop a top to you and to good ol' Dude "

" This made me cry! I can't really imagine the loss of something like THAT happening. But I did loose a dog, but to a human and a car... Anyway, it's not as worse as a bear doing the hurtful job. I am very very sorry for your loss. I'm sure there is no replacement for Dude. He's a hero! I will be keeping a close eye on my dog that I have currently, I will be in loss of words forever to loose anybody that didn't have to do with natural causes. Again, I am very sorry for your loss and know that a lot of people now loves Dude! "

" I just want to thank everyone for their kind words.I'm Jason Schindler's mom and this loss has been very hard on our family. Dude was an exceptional dog and I thank God he was there to save our son's life. Yes, the ultimate sacrifice and I truly believe that if Dude had to do it all over again, he would do the same thing. He is buried under "Dude's tree" now where he grew up and will always be close in our hearts. Thank you Dude!!! "

" RIP Dude. Mankind recognizes the selfless and unconditional love dogs have for their people. To Jason and anyone else who may be subject to confrontations with dangerous wildlife... please carry a gun for your protection. If you could face bear, a .44 magnum or better might be the thing to have so the next Dude or you don't need to fall victim to the bear if at all possible. Coincidentally, it is very effective at protecting from the most dangerous predator of all as well. "

We only have our pets for a short time. May we show them the love & respect they so deserve. Extra hugs for our Rottweiler, Elle Mae. "

" We lost our companion sometime ago, and went without for a while, but finally got another and what a joy it is to have her around. She is smaller than our other dog but just as lovable. Our old one was busy one time and my leg gave out and the dog immediately dropped what he was doing and came to attend me he let me use him to get back on my feet and then stayed by my side for a couple of days. We replaced him with one from a shelter, and she is just as good, but will never be the same as the other, they all have different personalities. "

" Sorry to hear about your loss. People become so attached to animals that when something happens to them, no one can explain what you go through. I'm sure that you gave him 8 wonderful years of his life and hopefully you can move on from this tragedy. Dude is truly a hero and although this brought tears to my eyes, thanks for sharing the story Trib. Animals are amazing creatures. "

" Dude must have been one Heck of a dog! Mr Schindler, you are a lucky man not just to have been rescued literally from the jaws of death but to have had such a resolute and selfless companion. I didn't lose my dog but was saved by my dog three years ago along a desert road outside Wickenburg, AZ. Chesty, my daughter's 5 year old American Staffordshire Terrier, sensed the Diamondback rattler at the edge of the pavement, he pressed into my side and effectively moved our family with our German Sheperd on the other side of two adults away from the hazard. When the Diamondback moved to strike, Chesty lunged and grabbed the 6 1/2 foot snake behind the head and crushed its neck. It was a two Milkbone night for Chesty that night! Semper Fi "

I'm quite sorry he could not be saved. My heart aches for you. I wish you many fond memories of your beloved Duke. While he is not replaceable, I hope your family can find joy in another canine companion. "

" will follow their noses, and are bred to tree (or bark if you would rather). When that scenario happens, it is a flip of a coin. Wolves are the current problem. Two hundred dogs have been killed by wolves. The true information that the Tribune should be sharing to all that venture in the woods without a handgun and maybe their kids in tow. The DNR does not want these statistics shared. They are also past the formerly desired numbers now. "

"Hound"? wrote on Feb 26, 2007 10:21 AM:

" Sounds to me like a breed that uses it nose and pursues game. In regard to wolves-Last year a group of 'hound' fellows were pursuing bears up by Black River. They sent 5 hounds into a parcel after fresh bear sign. The knew the bear would come out the other side from their electronics so they drove over. Not very much time expired and the bear came out and crossed the road. They went back in and all five dogs were dead in a very short time. One female wolf! Be careful out there. "

We miss Dude wrote on Feb 25, 2007 1:13 PM:

" I have a comment for the person that wrote about my brothers dog being bred to pursue game. He was NOT bred to pursue game, he was a mut. He was just out getting exercise when he came across the bear. He started barking thats all. He didn't attack the bear, he just barked. The bear became aggressive with them. I dont believe myself that bears are timid compared to wolves. They are very agressive and if it wasn't for Dude my brother would be dead. For you to say the things that you said was just out right rude. I'm sure you never had something like this happen to you, because if you did you would be saying somethinng totally different. I just want everyone to know that Dude is a hero and he will be missed by the whole family. "

" This is such a heart warming story. People don't realize how devoted their pets are, dying for you is the ultimate sacrifice. Your pet loves you unconditionally, nothing can ever change that. I hope this family will adopt another lonesome dog and know he will love them more than any person in their life. "

First! wrote on Feb 25, 2007 9:45 AM:

" Dogs that are bred to pursue game should not be let to run alone. Second, this time of the year bears could not be more hungry. Third, it was the bear or the dog. The dog lost. Lastly, if you want to know the real danger in our local woods now it is wolves. You may access a few stories in the Jan 07 Outdoor life. Bears are timid compared to these predators. "
