Iowa man gets prison on meth charge

.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A Lansing man who traveled to the La Crosse area to buy pseudoephedrine was sentenced last week to more than seven years in federal prison.

Gary A. Steiber, 24, was sentenced March 27 in Cedar Rapids by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. He pleaded guilty in August of attempting to manufacture methamphetamine.
Steiber admitted he had driven from Lansing to Onalaska, Wis., and La Crosse in July 2005 to purchase pseudoephedrine.

Police officers in Lansing received information that Steiber had been buying pseudoephedrine in Wisconsin. After learning there was an outstanding warrant for him, they conducted a traffic stop in Lansing and uncovered 12 boxes of pseudoephedrine and other items used to manufacture meth. Officers also found additional drug paraphernalia and items used to manufacture meth during a search of Steiber’s residence after the traffic stop.

Steiber was sentenced to 87 months in prison and must four years of supervised release.

" I agree with you for the most part-except that personal choice and freedom should be the "default", so to to speak. Let me explain. My freedom is my inherent right. If the Government wishes to infringe on my liberties, they must satisfactorily convince me they have a valid reason for doing so.I should not have to go through the hassle of changing something to make it how it should be in the first place. The burden is on them. What I am suggesting would not result in anarchy, as the Government does have a legitimate role of protecting others rights. "

" Please take a lesson from the sentencing in this case. Quit your plea bargaining and finger wagging! Read how this judge did the sentencing and learn! By the way, yes I voted today. You ran unopposed. I wrote in a candidate against you who also knows how to sentence...Roger Legrande. Two murderers who kill together...one gets 15 years, the other gets 30. I am for the 30 year sentence. "

glad they got another one! wrote on Apr 3, 2007 12:45 PM:

" i am so happy to hear that they nabbed another meth dealer/maker. i got tangled up in that stuff when i was 17 and i made my life a living hell. i have been clean for 3 1/2 years and it just makes my day when i hear about another person getting caught for this. it just means that there is one less person giving this to kids, or anyone for that matter. i tell ya, it is by far the worst thing that anyone could encounter. "

" Two part answer. We have elected a government to represent us which has legally made it the government's business. On the principles of it, I believe in a free society it never should be the government's business. Only things that violate the rights of others should be of concern. This means that I do not support the outlawing of drugs. That doesn't mean I encourage their use either. I just don't think someone smoking weed while otherwise minding their own business, needs to answer to anyone for it. But meth is really bad stuff, so if were legal what impact would that have? So, obey the law. if the law is wrong work to change it. "

" I have read two articles today with comments from you, I am pretty sure you are having fun messing with everybodies minds with your behind the scences meanings for what you really wrote---I want you to know that we all do understand what you have said, but I am pretty sure that you aren't really sure what you really mean!! " None of my tormentors answered my question. I am not talking about stuff that is already illegal that someone may or may not do while on drugs. If you break the law while on drugs, you should be charged just like anyone else. Also, alcohol is legal but if you lure young kids with it, that is illegal. So, none of these posts addressed my concern. I am talking about drug use in and of itself. I will repeat my question: How is it any of the Governments business what someone puts into their own body? "

" pot should be the only thing not illegal. pot is not as harmful as alcohol "

Think about it... wrote on Apr 3, 2007 9:53 AM:

" What people do to themselves is their own business, but in the case of drugs, it's not only what they do to themselves, but then how they act when they are on them. Usually drug abusers become society's problem because of illegal activity or worse. Not to mention the fact that he was convicted of manuafacturing meth and most likely going to sell it to others, then it is everyone's concern. Also when someone does something that can and most likely will have an effect on others - then it is a concern. "

" It would be one thing if they chose to just kill themselves with drugs but these kind of people lure others (unfortunately, including kids) into their insane world. And by the way, it IS illegal. "

" What business is it of the Government to tell someone what they can or can't put into their own body? "
