Holmen board keeps fluoride issue alive

.
HOLMEN, Wis. — Holmen has not seen the end of fluoride for its water supply.

The village board Thursday turned away a motion to keep fluoride out of its public water supply by a 4-3 vote.
Holmen remains one of the largest municipalities in Wisconsin not to add the substance, which supporters say prevents tooth decay and detractors say is mass medication at best and mass poisoning at worst.

“We haven’t seen the end of it,” said board member Mark Seitz.

Seitz and board member Ryan Olson suggested the board’s Finance and Personnel Committee take a look at the issue and what it would cost.

“My biggest concern about fluoridation is the cost, which I think is not prohibitive,” said Seitz.

“The benefits of (fluoridating the water supply) are clear — it is cost-effective for public health,” said Olson. “The majority of village residents want it.”

Olson said all Minnesota cities and 90 percent of Wisconsin municipalities have fluoridated water. “You don’t hear those residents agitating to get out of it,” he said.

Thursday’s meeting generated some small fireworks between Village President John Chapman and Olson, with Chapman saying Olson had a conflict of interest because his family’s business owns the building used by fluoridation proponent Randall Moseng, a dentist who is chairman of Holmen Citizens for Better Dental Health.

“You should disclose that your family rents to Dr. Moseng,” said Chapman.

“It infuriates me you are accusing me of taking my oath of office frivolously,” Olson fired back. “The voters can determine if I have conflicts.”

Voting against the resolution to keep fluoride out of the water supply were Ron Allers, Nancy Proctor, Olson and Seitz.

Voting for it — and thus against fluoridation — were Rich Anderson, Neil Forde and Chapman.

" I, along with many of my friends suffer from receding gums. So I decided to conduct a little experiment. I eliminated all known sources of fluoride in my house, including fluoridated toothpaste. After about a week on this fluoride free regime, my gums were not tender anymore, I could think much clearer, and generally felt better. My 15 year old daughter commented that her teeth did not hurt anymore as well after using the fluoride free toothpaste. After only a month, it appeared that my gums have stopped receding and have stopped hurting completely. Which leads me to this puzzling question, "If fluoride toothpaste is such a great product, then why does it cost 2-3 more to buy fluoride-free toothpaste?" Conduct your own "experiment" and see what happens. signed, fluoride free "

" Fluoridation has created a sizeable boost in business for eye doctors and optomitrists here in Madison, Wisconsin. I arrived here in 1948 after passing Navy flight physicals, most reading the(20/10) line with each eye separately. Within months in Madison I began having eye problems, got glasses, and had one or both lenses changed 8 times in 19 months. Going to an eye doctor, instead of an optometrist, he found 'granulated eyelids' and burned those tiny bumps out 3 weeks in a row, again six months later. From a dentist's coment, I then found out what was different - Fluoridation - and went to bottled spring water, and eyes improved. Found others who had same problem when moving here from small towns. Head of our Health Department saying "things are just the way we want them!" and optical people have increased. Ir does create jobs!! . "

" Efforts exist to remove fluoridation from water. Many people concerned with ingestion of excess chemicals, including water fluoridation, pesticides and herbicides on food products, and other chemical additives. The rate of "unexplained" chronic illness in the USA keeps going up and up. Unnatural chemicals are the cause. First, the word was put out to blame people's genetics, but now it is scientifically known that one or more chemical triggers in the forms of environmental toxins are needed before the genetics cause the problem. Chemical manufacturers have created this spin that has been reported for too long in the mass media as fact, blaming genetics for chronic illnesses in general--to distract away from environmental toxin factors that correspond with adverse changes in the body. That spin was generated to get victims to blame themselves, instead of the trickster. "

" Those Holmen councilors who support fluoridation should at least cite one study that convincingly demonstrates fluoridation's effectiveness. Can they? No! The largest US survey could only demonstrate an average saving of 0.6 of one permanent tooth surface (Brunelle and Carlos, 1990) and subsequent studies and reviews show even less (Spencer, 1996; Locker, 1999; Armfield and Spencer, 2004 and Pizzo, 2007.) The CDC claimed in 1999, that tooth decay in 12 year olds was coming down from the 60's to the 90's because the number of Americans drinking fluoridated water was going up. However, according to WHO figures tooth decay in 12 year olds has been coming down by equal or greater amounts in most non-fluoridated countries over the same period. There are no grounds here to overrule a citizens right to informed consent to medication. Fluoridation is a more like a religion than a science. "

" I am shocked. After reviewing the research literature evaluating the effects of chronic, low levels of fluoride ingestion, I realized that my low thyroid function may be caused by fluoride. I embarked on an experiment.I eliminated fluoride intake as much as is humanly possible. It is of course impossible to eliminate fluoride from anyone’s diet, because it is found in our food, in our air that we breathe, in the water that we drink, and in many dental products in use today. The result of my experiment? I no longer require thyroid hormones. Hypothyroid symptoms are gone. My thyroid blood serum numbers have moved into “optimal” range. According to the 2006 NRC report on Fluoride, drinking fluoride is KNOWN to cause harm - not only to teeth, but to our bones, our thyroid, and our brain. Eliminating fluoride has made me well again. " Perhaps the proponents should read this and then tell us where the new mothers will get water for their babies. What type of water does CDC recommend for mixing infant formula? The CDC says "Bottled water known to be low in fluoride is labeled as purified, deionized, demineralized, distilled, or prepared by reverse osmosis." (This type water will be less than 0.01 PPM of fluoride.--My comment) Some tap water and most bottled water contain low concentrations of fluoride. Mixing concentrate with fluoridated tap water on an occasional basis is unlikely to be of much consequence. For infants whose primary nutrition source is formula from concentrates, parents should take into consideration the fluoride concentration in their water source when making decisions about mixing formula. "
