Helen C. Elsen
Helen C. Elsen, 89, of La Crosse died Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the Onalaska Care Center. She was born Sept. 26, 1917, in the town of Hamburg, Vernon County, Wis., to Mathias and Bastine (Hullum) Midtlien. She married Leo Elsen on May 2, 1939, and together they farmed in Chaseburg, Wis., before moving to La Crosse in 1968. Helen then worked at Lutheran Hospital in the housekeeping department.

She is survived by three daughters, Yvonne (David) Whiteman of Holmen, Wis., Patricia (Bud) Becker of La Crosse and JoAnne (Dennis) Schlicht of La Crosse; two sons, Jerold Elsen of Spooner, Wis., and Dan Elsen (Nancy Tremmel) of Onalaska, Wis.; 19 grandchildren, Kathy (Charles) Eirschele, Janine Hansen, David (Bonnie) Michalski, Marty (Pepper) Michalski, Linda Field, Lisa (John) Campbell, Tracy (Michael) Hokanson, Jim (Michele) Elsen, John (Michele) Elsen, Kris (David) Deiss, Jason (Lisa) Elsen, Tara (Cale Swanson) Elsen, Jana (Gene) Caron, Stephanie (Dennis) Knudsen, Ryan (Lori) Elsen, Adam (Cristina) Elsen, Andy Elsen, Tressa Schlicht and Paul Schlicht; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two daughters-in-law, Mary Elsen and Betty Elsen; two sisters-in-law, Martha Elsen and Leona Elsen; along with many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Elsen on Aug. 10, 1993; two sons, David “Whitey” Elsen and Robert Elsen; one grandson, Shane Elsen; one great-grandson, Andy Elsen; two sisters; and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 16, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 124 Losey Blvd. S., La Crosse. Msgr. Robert Hundt will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum, Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at SchumachernKish Funeral Home of La Crosse, where a rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials, may directed to St. Clare Health Mission or the donor’s choice.

The family would like to thank the staff at Onalaska Care Center for the care given Mom during the past years.

Helen Elton

WESTBY, Wis. — Helen Elton, 93 of Westby, died Thursday evening, April 12, 2007, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, Wis. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Hallemeier will officiate, with burial in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the church. Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.

Natividad ‘Sonny’ Orozco

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Natividad “Sonny” Orozco, 57, of Black River Falls, died Thursday eveing, April 12, 2007, in Black River Memorial Hospital under the care of Black River Hospice. Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 16, at Black River Baptist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Jordan will officiate, and burial will be in Decorah Cemetery, rural Black River Falls. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, and from noon until services Monday at the church. www.buswellfuneralhome.com

Signe M. Isaacson

VIROQUA, Wis. — Signe M. Isaacson, 88, of Viroqua died on Friday, April 13, 2007, at Bethel home in Viroqua. Funeral services are being planned for Wednesday, April 18. A complete obituary will be in the Sunday La Crosse Tribune. Thorson Reetz Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.

Marvin J. Moor

NODINE, Minn. — Marvin J. Moor 87, of Nodine passed away at home April 12, 2007.

He was born Nov. 13, 1919, in La Crosse to Alvin and Lillian (Haas) Moor. He attended Washburn Elementary, Lincoln Middle and Central High schools and graduated with the June class of 1937. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines and Army Transport Services during World War II. He married Anita V. Moldenhauer on May 16, 1948, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nodine. This union was blessed with three children: Dawn (Ken) Hemker of Barre Mills, Wis., Michael (Linda) Moor of Nodine, and Joan L. Moor of Winona, Minn.

Marvin had worked for more than 40 years on both the Burlington and Milwaukee Road as telegraph operator station agent and train dispatcher at various locations in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois, retiring in 1979. He also helped his wife and children in operating the Moldenhauer Store in Nodine for more than 50 years.

In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by five grandchildren; Melissa (Jamie) Lockman and Ryan Hemker of Bangor, Wis., William, Robert and Douglas Moor of Nodine; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marion J. Randall of Onalaska, Wis.

He is further survived by one stepdaughter, Myrna Tesch of Canby, Minn.; stepgrand-children, Monica (Rick) DeBlois of St. Peter, Minn., Michelle (Tom) Ries of Marshall, Minn., Michael Tesch of Canby; three step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and several nieces; nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth; brother-in-law, Carl; niece, Julie Entringer; and brother-in-law, Richard E. Randall.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, growing roses and the “coffee therapy” found only at the Nodine Truck Stop. Although not a member of a church at the time of his death, he was baptized and confirmed Lutheran and truly believed Jesus Christ to be his Lord and Savior. He was a 50-year member of Onalaska Lodge F&AM 214 and the La Crosse and Eau Claire Consistories.

There will be a gathering of friends and relatives from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent, Minn. A private committal service for the immediate family will be at Hiler Cemetery the following day.

John F. Bromley Jr.

John F. Bromley Jr. passed away Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Golden Living Center, La Crescent, Minn. He was born in Chicago on Nov. 7, 1925, to John and Vivian (Lester) Bromley. On Jan. 14, 1950, he married Joanne Cramer in Chicago. She preceded him in death in 2004.

John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he worked for Marsh McLennon in Chicago as an insurance broker. He became assistant vice president before retiring. After retiring he lived in Salem, S.C., and Green Valley, Ariz. In 2004, he moved to La Crosse.

John is survived by a son, John (Mary) Bromley of La Crescent, Minn., and their daughters, Katie (Casey) Bradley of Monroe, Wis., Jinah (Evan) Finnes of Rochester, Minn., and Beth Bromley of Chicago; a daughter, Ann (Kyle) Craig of Kildeer, Ill., and their children, Lynn Craig of New York City and Paul Craig of De Kalb, Ill. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Margaret (Frank) Piont.

In accordance with John’s wishes, a private ceremony will be held. Memorials can be sent to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation in John’s memory. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Otis ‘Junior’ Wilson Klinger

FERRYVILLE / STODDARD, Wis. — Otis “Junior” Wilson Klinger, 89, of Stoddard, formerly of Ferryville, died Friday morning, April 13, 2007, at his home in rural Stoddard.

He was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Blackhawk County, Waterloo, Iowa, to Otis W. and Grace (North) Klinger. They moved to Ferryville in 1921, and on Sept. 21, 1940, he married Anna Dagon. Otis worked at the Chevrolet Garage in Ferryville for Alfred Kandall. He was in the Civilian Conservation Corps, owned and operated the Sportsman Bar in Feryville and then was drafted into the U.S. Navy. Otis served with the Seabees in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Ferryville and built a Mobil Station, where he also sold televisions. Otis also was a commercial fisherman until selling the station to build the Grand Vu Motel. He and Anna operated the motel until 1980, when they moved to rural Stoddard and built a new home. Otis worked for the Corps of Engineers and then, prior to his retirement, worked as a master mechanic for Dairyland Power Plant in Genoa, Wis.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. His hobby was wood marcatrine. Otis had served on the Ferryville Village Board and was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa, the De Soto VFW Post 8032, Genoa-DeSoto American Legion Post 246 and Viroqua Eagles Aerie 2707.

Otis is survived by one son, Jan (Sandra) Klinger, Grand Junction, Colo.; one daughter, Sharon Tower, Stoddard; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Marie (Gaylon) Peck, Santa Monica, Calif.; a special friend, Virginia Henderson, Viroqua, Wis.; and other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anna on Jan. 17, 1994; one granddaughter, Heidi Tower; five brothers, Fred, George, Percy, Glen and Bill Klinger; and three sisters, Beulah Harris, Lila Koob, Bernita Johnston and Blanche Hackett.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 16, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Genoa, with the Rev. Roy Witucki officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Mormon Coulee Park, rural La Crosse, with Military Rites by VFW Post 8032 and American Legion Post 246. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua. Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to hospice.

Gary L. Rostvold

Gary L. Rostvold, 57, of La Crosse, died Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date and a complete obituary will be provided at that time. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting with arrangements.

Edna A. Schroeder

CALEDONIA, Minn. — Edna A. Schroeder, 96, of Caledon-ia passed away on Thursday, April 12, 2007, at Caledonia Care and Rehab.

She was born Dec. 24, 1910, in the town of West-field, Wis., near Reedsburg, Wis., to John and Augusta (Lichte) Meyer. On Dec. 18, 1932, Edna married Rudolph Schroeder in Reedsburg. Together they farmed in Mayville and Winnebago townships, Houston County, for many years. On May 30, 1993, Rudolph preceded Edna in death.

Edna was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Caledonia, where she served on the ladies aid. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening as well as crocheting and baking. Edna was a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all of her family.

Survivors include one daughter, Eleanor (Arnold) Kruckow of Caledonia; three sons, Kenneth Schroeder of Sparta, Wis., John (Judy) Schroeder and Reuben (Kathy) Schroeder, both of Caledonia; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Edna was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Evelyn; two grandsons, Robert Schroeder and Gene Kruckow; two brothers, Paul and Otto Meyer; and two sisters, Esther Diersen and Helen Schluter.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, 650 N. Kingston St., Caledonia. The Rev. Jon Wolff will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia, and from 1 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church roof fund.

Greg J. Kruse

EITZEN, Minn. — Greg J. Kruse, 44, of Eitzen died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Arrangements will be announced by Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, Caledonia, Minn.

Darwin D. ‘Doc’ McCumber

Darwin D. “Doc” McCumber, 70, of La Crosse died Friday, April 13, 2007, at his home. Memorial services will be announced by Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse.

Bernard Shuda

Bernard Shuda, 81, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at Mulder Health Care Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Dickinson Family Funeral Homes Gillette Street Chapel.
