UW-L dorm gets all-clear after bomb threat

.
A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse residence hall was evacuated for about three hours Wednesday after a worker found a written bomb threat in a bathroom.

A search of Sanford Hall, 1815 Farwell St., turned up nothing suspicious, and students were allowed to return about 5:30 p.m., La Crosse police said.

Just before 1 p.m., a custodian found a note in a second-floor bathroom that claimed a bomb would go off at 4:30 p.m., said Nick Nicklaus, UW-L director of residence life.

A UW-L emergency management team met with La Crosse and university police within 15 minutes of the threat being reported and decided to clear the building, which is on the campus’ east side near the La Crosse Street entrance, Nicklaus said.

“Your first thought is, ‘OK, we need to take action and make sure our students are safe,’” said Paula Knudson, dean of student development and academic services and a member of the team. “We weren’t overly concerned that it was a valid threat, but we weren’t going to mess around.”

“It was a no-brainer,” Nicklaus said. “We had to act like this was real.”

An e-mail about the threat was sent at 2:44 p.m. to the campus community and to students’ parents.

Officers and a police dog went through all four levels of the co-ed dorm, which houses 226 students, before pronouncing the building safe about 4:30 p.m. The incident remains under investigation, police said.

Classes continued as normal during the event.

The bomb threat came only two days after a 23-year-old student fatally shot 32 people at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., before committing suicide.

“After what happened at Virginia Tech, I can understand how serious they’re taking this,” said UW-L junior and Sanford resident Evan Buhrow, 21, of Edgerton, Wis.

Sanford Hall resident assistant Dave Magnuson returned from class to find fire trucks, police cars and barricades blocking the brick building.

“At first I imagined the worst with the Virginia shooting,” he said.

But most residents seemed more annoyed than panicked, Magnuson said. “Some people came back on rollerblades and they couldn’t get their shoes,” he said.

Cassie Sibiski wanted to study for an economics test, but her books were inside.

“I’m more mad (than scared),” the freshman said. “Who in their right mind does this? It’s not funny.”

Her mother was the one “freaking out,” Sibiski said. “I just told her it was probably a joke.”

Anyone with information about the incident should call La Crosse police at (608) 785-5962 or La Crosse Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 784-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.

" Once you go through the training needed to handle a situation like this, and then actually handle such a thing, then you can post an ignorant comment on here about a delayed email. tell me how many of you would ignore the students needing to be evacuated, halt the search for the bomb and make sure that whoever is in command here sends out an email! absolutely ridiculous! next you'll tell me that the person that did it was drinking all night in some bar and deserves a ticket! "

" I think that this bomb threat was handled quite well. who cares if someone in northern wisconsin didn't get an email sooner! and as for the students, if you couldn't check your email, then check the news. just because it's not on myspace or MTV doesn't mean you didn't have access to the information. These people that are carrying out the school shootings, etc, are obviously disturbed...however, it's always the loners, or the people that got picked on a lot in school. don't you think maybe if people were just a little more respectful and didn't go out of their way to make someone else's life hell that we would have less of these incidents? As soon as they commit such a heinous crime, then they are plastered all over the television! some new-worthy heroes! "

" You're right on. Anyone who knows anything about managing such an emergency knows that the first priority is to evacuate and secure the building, and look for the bomb. Only minutes passed until a full sweep of the building was underway. The La Crosse PD, the K-9 unit, and the staff at UW-L should be applauded for their ability to work together under intense pressure. "

" that people would take an event like this and copy cat it around the nation for personal attention. As a side note, I understand they have to take these things seriously - but has there ever been a bomb threat written on a bathroom stall that has come true? Why would someone who wants to actually do some damage TELL everyone when and where the bomb will go off? I just don't get it. "

" The email that went out 1 3/4 hours later is not how they dealt with getting the students who might be in danger to safety. They were evacuating the building long before that with other, far more effective means (fire alarms and door to door). The email was to let the rest of the campus community know what was going on. You don't send an email to evacuate a building - that's so ridiculous, I cannot believe people made that assumption. People need to step back and think about things before leaping to conclusions without all of the facts. (There's a better point, other stories the Trib prints without all of the facts.) My sympathies to the VT families and students. It is a big deal, and many more people care than don't. "

" As a student, I didn't find out about the bomb threat until I heard my classmates talking about it. I wasn't able to get to a computer at all during the afternoon to get the E-mail. To me that was scary to be on campus as all of this was happening. I have a few thigns to say about some comments below: 1. I can't believe someone who write in and say how they don't care about the VA Tech incident, how can you be so cold? 2. I agree that the media needs to tone it down a bit, and let the students and families grieve, instead of having the killers face plastered all over TV. Sometimes enough is enough. "

Stop the glorification......... wrote on Apr 19, 2007 2:33 PM:

" I wish NBC and all the others would quit glorifying this monster who slaughtered 32 innocent people in cold blood. I don't care why, or that he was teased, or whatever liberal pap spin is put on this. I heard a student today say we "shouldn't judge him." I wonder how many others will want to be even more famous, see if they can kill even more peole. Stop making him look important! "

" Well said, thanks for saying it. I know one thing for sure, the people who say (in this blog) they don't care are people I "don't care" to know. Because with that kind of attitude, they probably are not willing to care about anyone but themselves and definitely would not be a true friend to anyone except to the one looking back at them in the mirror. "

" those of you who say you could care less about virginia tech-the students who died there were someones children. someone loved them. how would u feel if the person you love the most was killed and people said ohh it doesnt affect me i dont care. i think theres something seriously wrong with ur brains if u dont naturally have sympathy towards the victims and their families "

" Thanks to NBC for releasing all of info. sent to them including his video, pictures, writings, etc. This offered no newsworthy content except to increase their ratings. It just shows how disingenuous they are when they have these somber reports and then they promote Massacre at...They are just a bunch of ratings whores. By promoting this crap they are in fact encouraging this idoits who copycat by giving it airtime. Yuk!!! "

" You both make good points. It sure seems like UWL might want to go back to the drawing board on how to deal with these types of situations. Seems like there is a lot of confusion going on. Thankfully it didn't take the police and fire dept. 1 3/4 hours to respond. "

" whoever replied and said, "you probably did it". I wouldn't do something like that as I am not incompetent and don't hate the world. However, i'll admit that i could care less about the VA Tech incident. I have better things to do than worry about some dead students that were not my friends. For example, it's a nice day and i am off to the golf course. "
