Three individuals gave $1 million each for UW-L stadium

.
After being introduced as one of three $1 million individual donors to University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex, Dave Skogen made sure to remind the audience a lot of work remains.

“We need your help, and we need many more people who are going to get out and find others who can donate,” Skogen said during a project update meeting Thursday at The Waterfront Restaurant.
Skogen, the owner of Festival Foods, Logistics Health Chairman/CEO Don Weber and local businesswoman Marge Reinhart, the widow of Reinhart Cos. founder D.B. Reinhart, were identified publicly for the first time as the main private benefactors for the $15 million project.

UW-La Crosse students approved $2.5 million in student fees toward the project in a February 2006 advisory referendum.

But, as Skogen told about 75 invited guests at the meeting, the fundraising campaign isn’t over. About $8.2 million has been pledged so far, UW-L project point man Mike Desmond said, meaning $7 million more is needed before construction is set to start in June 2008.

Skogen offered a plan to gather that remaining $7 million: $2 million more in large gifts; $2 million in 200 gifts of $10,000; $1 million from 200 gifts of $5,000; $1 million from city, county or school districts; $400,000 from rights to corporate boxes; and $300,000 each from veterans and a so-called “angel gift,” meaning an unexpected donor.

“Now is where the work comes in,” Skogen said. “We have to reach more businesses and families and see if we can sell them on donating another $5 to $10 million.”

Skogen called it an “easy decision” to donate and help the cause when Desmond contacted him.

“I’ve had a chance to get to know coaches, administrators and the chancellor, and we’ve got good people here,” said Skogen, who also is on a fundraising committee. “And it’s fun to line up with good people.”

Weber said it was important to be a part of something that will have a lasting effect on UW-L and the city.

“We want students to see what we have to offer here and decide that they want to be here,” Weber said. “If they can see that we are progressive, they’re going to want to be a part of this community.”

Reinhart did not attend the meeting.

“Dave and (wife) Barb, Don and (wife) Roxanne and Marjorie have proven already that they believe in this community, and for us to be able to finally announce their names is important as we move forward,” Desmond said. “We hope it will serve to motivate other people out there to give.”

Desmond reviewed new architectural drawings of the stadium. The most significant change from the original plan was permanent seating was decreased from 10,000 to 8,000. He said portable bleachers will be brought in to accommodate larger crowds for the WIAA State Track and Field Meet.

" They just donated $1 million a piece. They SHOULD DESERVE to have their name in lights. Not many people are willing to donate that much money to public affairs. Most people would be greedy and try to use the money themselves. If you donated $1 million, wouldn't you want your name in lights? Think about it. They should be commended for trying to help out the community. "

Parking tickets wrote on Apr 21, 2007 11:58 AM:

" If people could read and follow simple directions. Their would no longer be any parking tickets. Then how would we pay for the stadium. "

10,000 seats wrote on Apr 21, 2007 11:52 AM:

" I have worked at these games. Lets not get carried away here, the reason people were turned away was a cry for the new stadium. Their was never a time people could not attend a game due to lack of seats. DIII football will never sell out 10,000 seats. It's all about State Track! "

" The contributors should not be grilled on this point or any other concerning the Stadium. Shame on you, get up to speed. "

Parking Ticket?? wrote on Apr 21, 2007 10:14 AM:

" They should put the parking ticket money from UW-L into this fund...I mean you get a parking ticket for anything now days on campus. That would raise 15 million dollars in two days flat! "

" I just asked what the point was in printing their names.I didn't say I was jealous or against it did I? I wasn't even sure if they wanted that. Some people prefer to stay anonymous.I also never said anything about starting rumors either, did I? Maybe listen to some comments a little closer before responding with hostile answers. I'm for building the place and building it bigger. It could be used for other events to help generate revenue. "

why? wrote on Apr 20, 2007 8:37 PM:

" why are you people beating up on the donors? I just dont' get it.....they are damned if they give money and print their names..and they are damned if they keep the money. I just don't get it. "

" till these guys also start paying more than $10 an hour to the people who made this disposable income possible for these folks? Not knocking capitalism in any way, but "capitalism" has little or nothing to do with Gov't handouts, tax breaks, $1 land deals, and many, many more issues that bring rise to these companies prosperity. So why should it apply to them only when they are being congratulated and fawned over? Take a look at what the people really make, then tell me this couldn't have been put to better use. Just a thought..... "

" Maybe La Crosse and U.W.L. can work to get another N.F.L. team back in La Crosse. They could play an exibition game with another team and donate the proceeds to the stadium. A WIN for everyone and the locals wouldn't have to pay for all of it. Just a thought! "

Excellent! wrote on Apr 20, 2007 2:12 PM:

" Thank you, thank you, thank you! The old stadium is crumbling, and the track is getting past the stage where it may be resurfaced again; with the new stadium we have the possibility of continuing to hold on to the WIAA State Track meet, which many other campuses would love to take away from the LaCrosse area. The stadium is something that will benefit the entire community, financially and otherwise. The facility is used heavily by local high schools, junior high, Special Olympics, and many other groups in addition to the university. "

Thank You wrote on Apr 20, 2007 1:58 PM:

" Ever been to the WIAA state track meet. You obviously haven't if you question the need for that much seating. This event brings so much money into lacrosse. Its a win win for everyone. All business owners should be lining up and throwing money in to get this stadium built!!! "

RE: 10,000 seats? wrote on Apr 20, 2007 1:22 PM:

" You think football isn't that big in La Crosse??? Have you ever been to a game and seen that students, parents, community members are continously turned away because there isn't any room for them to sit or even stand? Have you noticed that UWL has one 3 of the last 5 conference titles? Or won the conference 33 times total? Or has made 17 appearances in the NCAA Div. 3 playoffs? Football IS big in La Crosse and the Eagles deserve the best stadium possible!! "

Thank you, wrote on Apr 20, 2007 10:55 AM:

" I do not attend UWL- nor did I in the past, but it's nice to see people that can afford to give such a generous gift, do so. Thank you very much, it will be appreciated by many young adults. Thanks, Don Weber!!! "

That is a wonderful contribution wrote on Apr 20, 2007 10:24 AM:

" Now take 1/2 for the stadium and the other 1/2 for a parking plan. What are you going to do with the additional cars that will fill the larger 10,000 seat stadium. I pity those poor people in that neighborhood. I will bet it will end up on our dime. State or City monies no difference. Let's get the whole truth, all the expenditures, instead of 'holy smokes we have a prking problem that we have to handle'. Surprise, surprise, surprise! "

" Why wouldn't they print their names? Are you jealous like I am? You wish you had that kind of money to throw around. "

Bob Moline wrote on Apr 20, 2007 8:51 AM:

" I agree that UWL needs a new stadium, but it should be made as big as possible. UWL should be a Divison 1 school. The reason they can't get football games is because small Divison III schools get tired of getting beat up by a program the size of UWL. The justification that UWL has no scholarships is a false issue because the Tax Payers pay most of the cost of going to UWL. It cost more to go to a scholarship school with a scholarship than it does to go to UWL with out one. In effect, every one has a scholarship at UWL. A good example of short sighted planning is the new gym at Aquinas H.S. It is a lot bigger than the old one, but it still is not big enough. "

What is the point of showing names? wrote on Apr 20, 2007 7:32 AM:

" Well if you read enough comments on this website on the project, you will read numerous posts asking where they are going to get the money from to fund the project. Well this partially answers that and it sends a great message to others that they believe in the project and see the value of it to the city of LaCrosse. Hopefully this will get others to step up in the community to help fund this project. I hope this answers your question! "
