OUR VIEW: We should listen to each other

.
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards was well received at last weekend’s California Democratic Convention. That’s because he was saying what the audience wanted to hear.

He spoke about his opposition to the war in Iraq, and how he believes his vote for the war in 2003 was wrong. He also spoke out against the genocide perpetrated against people in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Four years ago, he did not fare as well before California Democrats. He was heckled for his vote for the war and had a very hard time getting his message across.

But California Democrats are by no means the only people who heckle speakers they believe are sending the wrong message. It happens on college campuses all the time.

The University of Wisconsin has had its share of heckling speakers, mostly conservatives. And Rockford College, a conservative campus in Illinois, severely heckled New York Times reporter Christopher Hedges when he spoke against the war in Iraq during a commencement address in 2003.

President Bush’s commencement address at Yale University in 2001 was boycotted by many faculty members and students. People turned their backs on him and booed and hissed during the speech. In 2006, Sen. John McCain was booed and heckled when he tried to give the commencement address at New York City’s New School University. One student, noting that McCain had been giving the same speech at graduation ceremonies throughout the country, began to trash it before he even had a chance to speak.

In a democracy that supposedly has respect for the free flow of information and ideas, the behavior of many people attending political and other speeches is disgraceful. It makes no difference whether the speaker is liberal or conservative — audiences have been harsh to both.

People should have a right to disagree with speakers. But they shouldn’t have a right to prevent them from getting their message across — and this should hold true whether the speaker is President Bush, John McCain or John Edwards.

Let’s listen to each other for a change, instead of trying to shout down people with whom we disagree.

" I just don't understand why there's any criticism of Ron Kind. He's a Packer fan; he's got nice hair; and he's a favorite of every single squirrel in Cameron Park. Memo to Reid Magney: Please do a follow-up story on Kind and the squirrels. I think a photo of Ron standing near the 10 Commandments with a couple of squirrels perched on the monument would be just right for the front page. "

" Look: folks are angry -- me too -- but tell me Why shouldn't they be? I NEVER wanted the war (in Afghanistan and well as in Iraq) and I NEVER believed W, George Tenet, Condi or Colin Powell et. al. about the 'best' intelligence etc. -- but even if you were convinced about this awful unnecessary quagmire the VERY PEOPLE that got WHAT THEY WANTED THEN BOLLOXED IT UP! Conservatives must be 'mad as hell' but since they can't take it out on their 'beloved' GWB et. al. they have to vent the old 'stab in the back' slander as if they were nazis explaining the German loss in WWI. How DO we speak 'rationally' to a prez who really does seem to 'need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows'?... "

" Well you pays yer money and 'silences' the views YOU don't like? Edwards SHOULD be 'silenced'? Is that a threat to his life? WHAT are you saying?! Is Thomas Jefferson so dead that Adolf Hitler and Joe Stalin have taken his place as 'neo-conservative' heroes? THINK before you write such blather. (Ronald Reagan would be appalled and ashamed!) The war of course is lost because W, Cheney, Rummy, Wolfie (with his shiksa girlfriend on the payroll of his 'new' job to screw up) lost it; and the only LIBERALS responsible are those like Kind who voted for it. Edwards at least acknowledges his own responsibility as a terrible mistake... "

" Is all civility gone?? It's very disheartening to see that there are so many people who think it's their right and duty to yell/heckle/drown out whoever they disagree with, no matter what the format or occasion. Are these the same people who say if I don't like the filth on TV, turn the channel? The same people who say if I don't like smoke, don't go anyplace where people are smoking? Well how about taking your own advice: If you don't like what Republicans say, don't go to the speeches. But suddenly, for some reason, that doesn't apply to you. You think it's your place to "correct" the speaker. So I guess whoever yells the loudest gets to be heard. Oh that's a nice system, isn't it. "

" I certainly believe in politeness but wouldn't that uh 'truth-o-meter' be a blessing! But hey Trib: THAT's SUPPOSED to be YOUR JOB HMMM?! The Trib editorials are well known for their 'Do I dare eat a peach?' approach -- 'balance' as in whatever John McCain says can be as valid as John Edwards and whatever Ron (wunder)Kind says gets front page with a photo! ('Kind Feeds Squirrel in Cameron Park!' with story by Reid Magney.) The Trib's tepid endorsement of Kind last fall hardly touched on the real awfulness of this fiasco in Iraq; instead it spoke of train whistles. Train whistles. Do I even have to say how pathetic that is?... "
