Nine named to La Crosse housing design standards committee

.
Nine people were named Thursday to a committee that will be charged with working out design standards for any new multi-unit buildings constructed in La Crosse.

The La Crosse City Planning Department was asked nearly two years ago to develop the standards in about 15 broad areas, and presented a proposed ordinance to the Common Council several months ago.
But the measure was delayed several times after landlords and developers raised concerns the proposed standards would exacerbate parking and other problems.

The council decided last month to form a committee on the issue that would include two landlord/developers, one architect designer, a university student, two neighborhood group members and three council members.

Mayor Mark Johnsrud appointed, and the Common Council approved, the following to committee: Jim Bloedorn, Douglas Farmer, Scott Halweg, Aron McManus, David Morrison, Steven Nicolai, Jon Olson, Marvin Wanders and Charles Weeth.

I hope this bunch will not ...... wrote on May 13, 2007 10:11 PM:

" bow to pressure. Like allowing a 40% 'RELAXING' in present parking codes if the builder/developer installs bike racks? One only remember the Mr. D's debacle, and order of events to reflect on something that already passed concerning this issue that smelled fishy, real fishy! Look the City leaders have already stated that the are on a quest for "acquisition" of land for parking for LHI, pump house, Center, Piggy's etc, etc. The County wants to build and then raise another ramp , sharing it with Western. Add to that another 1000 students and 8000 for a full new UWL stadium. At $14k per parking spot it scare me and my checkbook. Can you say 'emergency' might be coming around the corner once again, on our dime, actually a lot of our dimes. "

Some real good choices wrote on May 13, 2007 10:04 PM:

" Although a few bad ones as well. You have a self professed 'smart one' who was in on the ordinance to require surveys for any building in Lacrosse, It failed! He also came up with the brilliant ordinance to require weight load reports for professionals to add CDX or OSB roof deck in retrofit shingling applications. My friend of 40 years in a premier Architectural firm almost laughed himself out of his chair. Not only did he think the cost would be prohibitive , but did not know where he would start with so many rafters, joists, and different woods that made up those components. This is the same council man who thought an impending parking problem from the 2nd LHI building would be acceptable as it would signal we are prosperous and growing, and he welcomed it? "
