Biking paradise : La Crosse nabs distinction from national organization

.
Nearly weekly, Deborah Hirsch of La Crosse calls friends down South with what she calls an “ain’t it great to live in Wisconsin” story. Many of the stories feature her bicycle in a starring role.

The Georgia native gave her car to charity in 2003 and has gotten around almost exclusively on two wheels, or two feet, ever since. Biking in La Crosse, she said, “is almost like paradise to me.”

Today, The League of American Bicyclists will designate La Crosse as a Bicycle Friendly Community, one of just 64 to earn the distinction nationally since the program began in 2003. At least 161 communities applied.

La Crosse senior planner Adryan Slaght spearheaded the effort and steered the city’s application through in March. The distinction will not bring any more funding, Slaght said, but may increase awareness to further bike-friendly policies.

“Once it’s on people’s radar, it becomes more important

to provide facilities to make biking easier and safer,” he said.

In recognizing La Crosse, the organization listed a series of bike-friendly efforts:

n Installing bike racks on all city buses.

n Adopting a Bicycle Plan, which led to the creation of a Bicycle/Pedestrian committee.

n Including bike racks and bike lockers in plans for the proposed mixed-used transit center downtown.

La Crosse also was praised for its efforts to improve bike access and safety for kids. The La Crosse School District acquired 80 bikes through a federal physical education grant in 2005-06. Every middle- and high-school student goes through a two-week unit about bike safety, said Jerry Berns, supervisor of health and physical education in the La Crosse schools.

“We consider biking a very important part of lifelong learning,” Berns said. “Teaching students to ride safely is especially important.”

Beyond the wide streets and smooth paths and civic efforts to make the roads friendly to cyclists, Hirsch mentioned another advantage of biking here: the air.

She came here from Atlanta, where the smog made the air “thick as mud.” The air in La Crosse, she said, “leaps out at you” with its clean, fresh taste.

Build a North-South bike trail wrote on May 31, 2007 9:15 PM:

" Build a great north south bike trail that all can use for transportation, or add a bike lane to all main hubs. The bike riding will save alot of gas money and slim us all down. "

The law for bikes wrote on May 31, 2007 12:17 PM:

" According to the Wisconsin Bicycle Laws, a bicycle is considered a vehicle. Although we should ride as far to the right as practicable, it does not mean riding in the parking lane. It is unsafe to weave back and forth to avoid parked cars. A motorist passing a bicycle in the same lane is required to give at least 3 ft. of clearance until safely past. A bicyclist passing a stopped or moving vehicle is also required to give at least 3 ft. of clearance when passing. That is the law. " "Now lets" - if you'd stop calling all bikers "morons" I'd take your opinion into count. Tone down the attitude...you sound like one of those "road rage" drivers...the one's we bikers fear. "

" I think "now lets" is just irritated because he's stuck in traffic all the time with his big pickup truck. Glug glug on the gasoline! Way to support those Iranians, bud. "

re now lets and your great ideas wrote on May 31, 2007 9:38 AM:

" I agree with your points regarding bikers (and car drivers) obeying the traffic laws. As for making this become a true biking paradise by having someone splattered on the streets, I think you should be the first volunteer since it was your idea. "

" You may not ride a bike past a building that enters directly onto the sidewalk. In any district! "

" Gee, now I think we should allow the private landlords who have been handed the 1000 student expansion for UWL to "relax" parking codes. We are just like Saigon with all the bikes. We can 'relax the parking codes if they install bike racks outside their housing units'. NOT!!!!! "

To Now lets wrote on May 31, 2007 9:14 AM:

" It is both proper and legal for bicyclists to ride on sidewalks except in commercial districts. Bicyclists must however yield to pedestrians and give an audible signal when overtaking. Drivers also must yield to bicyclists in crosswalks just like any other other pedestrian. "

La Crosse is a great place to bike and it's a better way to get wrote on May 31, 2007 9:02 AM:

" around this long skinny town than a car. The bike trails are great, 99% of cars treat you with respect. All we need is a north/south bike trail and we just happen to have a great river running along side this town that would be a great place to put it. "

Both sides of the fence wrote on May 31, 2007 8:45 AM:

" I have to agree with both "Now lets" and "Oz". I drive and I bike. I see faults in both. I do not feel it appropriate to point the finger at all drivers or all bikers. And I believe that both of them could use safety instruction from either side of the fence. Maybe you should get out and bike "now lets" then you might change your point of view as well. "

oz wrote on May 31, 2007 8:00 AM:

" NOW LETS quit issuing death threats against cyclists, and start enforcing the traffic laws like they are supposed to do. Quit allowing cars to pass bicycles too closely, to cut off bikes when they make right turns, or to bully pedestrians at crosswalks. Too many drivers are angry at the high gas prices and that anybody would dare to get 'in their way'; and they are willing to risk (at best) or threaten (at worst) the lives of legal and responsible cyclists or pedestrians just to save five seconds of driving time. These drivers are sick thugs, and they need to be locked up. "

Freddy Nakomi wrote on May 31, 2007 7:48 AM:

" Bull**** If this is a bike friendly city, then how come 1-of-20 cars stops at the crosswalks when someone is waiting to cross the street? Bike friendly maybe, Bike Safely not a chance! "

Occasional bike communter wrote on May 31, 2007 7:41 AM:

" The city trail makes biking to the North Side industrial park doable. I always obey traffic signs. The only time I use the sidewalk is 1) on the bridges and 2) a section of River Valley Drive. As far as I can tell bicyclists are supposed to use the sidewalk in these cases. "

Now lets wrote on May 31, 2007 4:21 AM:

" start enforcing the traffic laws for bikes like they are suppose to do. Quit allowing them to ride on the sidewalks, against traffic, through red lights, between stopped cars while at red lights, I could go on forever. Part of being a bike friendly city is to make sure bikes don't disrupt traffic flow and keep pedestrians safe also. Lets get some bike lanes so these morons aren't riding down the middle of the streets doing 10 mph and expecting traffic to stay behind them. Maybe it will take a few people splattered on the streets to get the city to truely become a "Biking paradise". "
