President Bush has publicly admitted to the following offenses: National Security Agency ordered to violate provisions of 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to conduct warrantless wiretaps on Americans; violating the Geneva Conventions by authorizing torture; holding as prisoners American citizens and international citizens without charge or trial; probable manipulation of intelligence to conduct an illegal war in violation of U.N. provisions; leaking national classified information to further political agenda.
These offenses have resulted in no adverse effects from the American people, nor American or international courts. The question remains if no adverse effects occur to Bush or this administration for these violations what will prevent future elected officials from similar violations of the law? Further, what does this say about the moral integrity of our nation?
Therefore, the La Crosse Interfaith Justice and Peace Group and other concerned citizens affirm their support for Wisconsin State Rep. Frank Boyle’s Resolution of April 4, calling for impeachment of President Bush.
Nationwide, 10 states have similar legislation pending. In his manual, Thomas Jefferson said: “initiation of impeachment legislation, when the federal government fails to act in the event of suspected impeachable offenses, lies with state governments.” At a minimum, censure or impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney is in order.
