Fay L. Cullmann

WEST SALEM, Wis. — Fay L. Cullmann, 89, of West Salem died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1917, to Louis and Meta (Lange) Cullmann. On Aug. 24, 1940, he married Kathryn Spaulding, and she preceded him in death June 5, 2004.

In 1944, he was drafted into the Army as part of World War II and spent his time in the United States. For many years, Fay owned and operated a portable roller rink, traveling to a different county seat each summer and spent winters working at Hemker Oil Co. He had worked at Bake Rite Bakery and had owned and operated Tri-State Nursery, both in West Salem, and later worked at Trane Co. until his retirement. Fay was a member of Salem Lodge 125 F & AM, a Boy Scout leader for Troop 77, hunter safety instructor as well as being a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of West Salem.

Fay enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. To know Fay was to know a guy who was non-materialistic, happy, loved jokes and had a great sense of humor. It wasn’t unusual for him to laugh until tears came down his cheeks just recalling a funny story. He enjoyed most sports and playing cards.

Survivors include one daughter, Jane (Jerry) Cartwright of Pensacola, Fla.; two sons, John (Sylvia) Cullmann of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Jim (Sharon) Cullmann of West Salem; a daughter-in-law, Donna Cullmann of La Crosse; and nine grandchildren, Jason (Lori) Cullmann, Jennifer (William) Freeman, Katy Cullmann, David Cullmann, Chad Cullmann, Matt Cullmann, Laura Cullmann, Reed Cartwright and Ross Cartwright. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bob Cullmann; and a granddaughter, Natasha Cullmann.

We will miss Fay’s stories, his jokes and wonderful sense of humor, his kindness, simplicity and unconditional love he showed to his family. He will live on through his children and grandchildren as they have all picked up on his terrific sense of humor and acquired some pretty good card playing skills. You were one of a kind, Fay, and we are so glad to have been a part of your life.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Presbyterian Church of West Salem, 625 W. Franklin St., West Salem. Pastor Stephanie M. Steiner will officiate. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery. Friends may call at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
