Police stay on the street despite high fuel costs

.
Local law enforcement agencies have avoided the pinch of record high gas prices by planning for the increase.

The La Crosse County Sheriff’s Department budgeted $130,000 for gasoline this year, up $10,000 from 2006, said Sheriff Steve Helgeson. About $49,000 of that was spent at the end of May, he said.
“We anticipated gas would not be cheaper,” Helgeson said.

The department is equipped with 34 squad cars, about half of them Ford Crown Victorias, plus other cars, sport-utility vehicles and jail-transport vans, he said.

The four squads running around the clock are filled at the end of every shift at area gas stations as a courtesy to the next drivers, Helgeson said.

The increased prices have not decreased patrols, he said.

“We feel it’s important that (deputies) are visible in the county, so we’re not asking them to reduce miles on patrol, and that’s not something we anticipate,” Helgeson said.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department gasoline budget has doubled in the past two years to $70,000 for 2007, said Sheriff Jerry Moran. About $23,000 had been used as of June 1.

Moran said the department was forced to borrow money intended for additional vehicles to help pay for gasoline.

The department is staffed with one Pontiac Grand Prix, three SUVs and nine Crown Victorias. On average, $50 to $60 of gasoline is pumped into the squads daily.

“Our county is 40 miles from one end to the other,” Moran said, but stressed that service won’t be sacrificed based on gasoline prices.

“Our job is to be out there patrolling and providing services to the residents,” he said. “I’m not one to tell the officers to not be out there.”

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department increased its gasoline budget from 2006 by $10,000 to $98,729 for 2007 based on an estimated $2.57 per gallon of gas, said Sheriff Richard Anderson. Figures on how much the department had used were not available, but Anderson estimated “we’re within the proximity of where we should be.”

The department uses 23 squad cars, mostly Crown Victorias and other vehicles, including SUVs. Anderson estimates about 100 to 150 miles are put on the squads per shift. The cars are filled about every other day at area gas stations.

“(Gas prices) have affected us, but we’re stable,” Anderson said. “But if prices stay the way they are, we’ll probably be over budget and have to give up something.”

Like La Crosse and Crawford counties, services in Trempealeau County won’t decline if gas continues to rise.

“We want to operate as efficiently as we can and be responsible to the taxpayers. We’re trying to do business as we always have,” Anderson said. “And we’ll continue providing as we always do.”

Ya know how to get smaller cop cars? wrote on Jun 18, 2007 10:17 AM:

" First, one city requests it from a company that tricks out fuzzmobiles. Cost may be high to moderate. Once they start and catch on, cost drops, and soon many citys use them to save gas. But instead of wringing our hands and saying "nobody makes them" you have to look into it and ASK! I'm OK using Civics, magnetic lights and cell phones. I don't know why you need all that other crap in La Crosse, but I'm sure someone justified it. Long gun? Squirrel hunter, is he? "

What other brilliant ideas have you got- I'm sure there is a reason they aren't doing it already. "

Nobody said they would all have to be hybrids. They could start incorporating those into fleets though just like cab company's.There would still be a place for several other type's of vehicles. The idea though, is to help save the tax payers money too.Everyone else has to come up with ways to live within budgets. It shouldn't be any different for law enforcement. The problem with not staying within budgets is that a lot of times positions get eliminated...One more thing they could do is use hybrids in place of the Jeep Wranglers they use to go around giving parking tickets. "

Also just for a second think of being in a situation where you wanted police in a hurry, but the hybrid engine only goes so fast. Oh well, you wanted fuel efficiency. "

" You're only getting a part of the story. Detectives are on call 24/7. When you're in bed at 2AM, he could be out on the job looking for some bad guy. At 6AM he could be on the road to go interview a witness across the state, then come home to catch a few zzz's and then go out again at 2AM again. The next morning on his day "off" he could be in court and then called out to help find some missing drunk. The waste would be having him drive back and forth to get an official car to protect your whiny butt each and very time! "

" Um, if I really need a police officer, I would much rather have the officer get to me via car than foot! Besides, how much area can you really cover in a short time on foot? This is a realistic request at festivals, etc., but for a normal patrol it is just ridiculous. "

Re: Jake & et al. wrote on Jun 13, 2007 8:50 AM:

" Do you realize that this article is addressing the COUNTY deputies and not the CITY officers? That would be the guys in the BROWN uniforms. It would be impossible to cover La Crosse COUNTY on foot! Besides, many of these deputies go from one call to the next, from one area of the county to another. Also, the COUNTY deputies do not keep vehicles at home; it even explained this in the article. Detectives are different because they can be on the clock 24/7 depending on the case-load. I believe the Sheriff knows what he is doing. Stop being so critical! "

To: Hybrids wrote on Jun 13, 2007 8:46 AM:

" Although I see your point of running more fuel efficient vehicles, it just isn't the way to go for a patroling police cruiser. Hybrids just aren't that powerful and could easily be outrun by someone with a preformance vehicle. Officers need to have that power there when its needed. Out in California, they have exotic police cars, just to keep up with the cars that many have out there. With that said, maybe they should get some turbocharged 4 cylinder cars around here, as they are more fuel efficient as long as you stay out of boost and then when you need the power...you have boost! "

More work on foot wrote on Jun 13, 2007 8:23 AM:

" I would think they could do more work on foot. With a little coordination they should be able to do things like pulling over speeders on foot. One guy could stand curbside with the radar gun and another halfway down the block to flag down the driver and write the ticket. That would be the gas of two vehicles saved. Also, that might be a good way to get people who run red lights, which seems to be a problem that gets worse and worse in the town. Cars just don't speed up for yellows anymore, they feel the need to enter intersections on red lights to the point people with a green light in the other direction must wait for them. "

" I lived across the street from a La Crosse Detective and noticed that he always drove his undercover vehicle home each night. So I asked a friend who is a regular cop for La Crosse about why the detective got to take his car home. The cop said it was because they didn't have enough room at the cop shop for all the cars so ALL the detectives get to take home a undercover car. How much is this costing the taxpayers in gas? Can any one on the city council answer that questions? I would like the city to give me a car to drive around for free. "
