The $235,000 project will double the size of the current group campground and relocate it away from the individual campsites to better accommodate each group, said John Hagman, facilities planner for the Department of Natural Resources.
State Rep. Jennifer Shilling, D-La Crosse, asked if an archeological review would be done in conjunction with the
campground construction. That prompted state Rep.
Phil Montgomery R-Green Bay, to quip, “are there some former political opponents (buried) there we don’t know about?”
“We don’t do that in La Crosse,” Shilling replied before being assured by state Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, that such a review is standard procedure.
Gov. Jim Doyle praised the natural beauty of the park, the state’s fifth oldest, before the campground request was approved unanimously.
