" Not true. My sister attends UW-L and earned enough to pay for her first year of college. Yes, certain colleges such as Viterbo offer more significant scholarships ($50,000+) if you attend their school, but you win scholarships regardless. And yes, they are expensive. But you are given clothing stipends from the program, and my sister was able to compete for significantly less than the scholarships she earned. "

" The scholarship awards are a joke. You have to attend one of those schools to get the money which you only get if you win. Often the $10,000 you would win is more than one year's tuition. Contestants spend more on their clothes than they win in scholarship money. I know of one that spent over $1000 on an evening gown and for what? Less than she won on scholarship money I'm sure. "

" I've been involved in the Miss America Pageant as a local volunteer for 25 years, and I can tell you the pageant program is a terrific opportunity for young women. It's a way to earn scholarship money, is open to anyone who meets the age/eligiblity requirements, and is conducted with great integrity. Contestants are encouraged to set high goals for themselves, pursue their education and get involved in their community. These young women are bright, talented and beautiful, and we are fortunate to have them representing our part of the state. Good luck to all!!! "

" To huh, I agree. Sad to relate, I don't seem to look too great in pics - due to not being photogenic. Well,ok, I don't look too good in real life either but it's the taking part that counts, isn't it? To Just a thought, Yeah, you're right but that's what over indulgence in the hard stuff does to you. I'm lucky to be able to type at all in my condition. Sorry to read that you're no longer a judge as maybe we could have got together in some kind of arrangement. Maybe a current judge might be interested in getting me a replacement place? Quid pro quo, if you get what I mean. "

Good Luck Miss Kristina! wrote on Jun 25, 2007 1:06 PM:

" You are such a bright shining star inside and out!!!! "

" Yes people care who aren't involved in the organization. This is a wonderful non-profit organization that gives out millions in scholarships to young women all over the United States. My younger sister was a local pageant winner years ago, and the total of her scholarships from the program paid for her first year of college. Even though she hasn't participated, we still attend many local contests and Miss Wisconsin to show support for such a great program. And to the person who complains about not being allowed- are you sure you aren't thinking of the Miss USA organization? That is a for-profit agency owned by Mr. Trump and they will deny entrance. It's completely different from the Miss America organization. They deny entry for very few strict reasons- such as not meeting the age requirement. "

Pageant Contestant wrote on Jun 25, 2007 12:45 PM:

" Yes! People do care! For those of you who don't know, it takes months of preparation to run in a Miss America Scholarship pageant-local pageants are a preliminary for Miss Wisconsin, which is a preliminary for Miss America. These women deserve to be applauded for the hard work they do serving and representing your community! "

Bugs Raplin wrote on Jun 25, 2007 9:58 AM:

" Does anyone (outside the contestants and their familes/friends)really care about these pageants? "

Just a thought wrote on Jun 25, 2007 8:46 AM:

" To Lefty: Perhaps the judges were unimpressed with your writing ability? "Preference", not preferment. "Aggravation", not aggrovation. I don't know whether or not the contest is fixed, but as a one-time pageant judge, this sort of carelessness would turn me off to an entrant immediately. "

Lefty LaRue wrote on Jun 25, 2007 6:43 AM:

" Just to let people know: this contest is fixed. Yet again I was banned from participating without a valid reason being given. All right, I refused to shave my legs but that's a personal preferment. I was wearing lipstick and high heels. Yes, I admit to having a slight amount of padding in the chest area but I was not the only one. Struggling to be accepted as normal is hard enough without all the unnecessary aggrovation. "
