As a county board supervisor representing one of the most diverse areas of La Crosse County, I see all too often the effects that ever-increasing health care costs and the simple lack of health care have on many people here.
Last September, county board supervisors Maureen Freedland and John Medinger jointly introduced a resolution to the La Crosse County Board which placed the following question on the ballot last November: “Should the Wisconsin Legislature pass a bill by 2008 that will assure access to quality and affordable health care coverage for all Wisconsin individuals and families?”
Yet despite the fact that this referendum passed on a countywide level with 85 percent of La Crosse County residents voting “yes,” our elected leaders in Madison such as Sen. Dan Kapanke, R-La Crosse, refuse to support a plan that would put Wisconsin on course to comprehensive health care coverage for all Wisconsin families.
Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle is equally to blame for not standing with Sen. Erpenbach and Senate Majority Leader Judy Robson, D-Beloit.
Jason Gillett represents the 11th District on the La Crosse County Board.
