Taxpayers to fund UW-L proposal

.
The Assembly Republicans would fund the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Growth and Access plan entirely with taxpayer dollars, instead of with tuition increases, as UW-L proposed and Gov. Jim Doyle approved.

The original Growth and Access plan would raise tuition for three years and increase student enrollment by 1,000. The $15 million generated from these changes would be used to hire new faculty and staff and provide financial aid for needy students.
The Republicans allocated about $4.3 million for UW-L to increase its faculty and instructional staff in 2008-09. None of the money would be used for financial aid.

“We’re pleased that both houses are acknowledging that we need more resources,”

UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow said. “However, we still maintain that utilizing tuition rather than taxpayer money is the best way to get those resources.”

Gow expressed concern about Republicans wanting to cut more than $100 million from the UW System. “On the one hand, La Crosse is getting some nice funding, but the system is taking a big hit,” he said.

Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem, was not available for comment Monday.

Does this reflect the tax payer wishes??? wrote on Jul 10, 2007 7:06 PM:

" This community has passed legislation discouraging college students. We rezoned and eliminated more than 3 unrelated people in the same homes in most of the city. We then identified the inspection depart. people as law enforcement officers who are required to enter their homes to inspect. We required their personal information to purchase a keg of beer. Now we ticket them for walking home if intoxicated. Now we have to pay for their "access and growth". Somebody realistically look at this. This group comes with inherent qualities. Somebody make up their mind. "

" It is interesting that the Assembly Republicans approved the portion of Growth and Access to expand UW-L- which is very much needed (and anyone who actually attended the G&A meetings and knew how a university is supposed to effectively run would agree). However, the entire Financial Aid portion of the proposal...the ACCESS part...was completely cut. This would have been a much needed financial aid boost to not only all future college students, but La Crosse community college students in lower socio-economic levels- thus making higher education more ACCESSABLE for all. But that would be bad...right? "

" Oh really, let's discuss your little heard of , almost covert $17k you are receiving that they have deemed to call a 'housing allowance. Added to your already lucrative pay/benefit package that dwarfs the average per capita income in lacrosse. Although it is much closer to the aver per capita in Dane County. Now, disparity is understandable if you think about it. There are more like you down there than up here. -Nestor Look forward to our next meeting in your office. "

" I agree with most of you on here. This "expansion" is completely unecessary, and is only a pandering to bureaucrats in Madison advocating more diversity. This will not improve the quality of education at UW-L, and definitely should not be done at the expense of taxpayers. Regent Brent Smith needs to start thinking about who he is supposed to be representing on the Board of Regents, rather than just trying to pad his resume. "

Isn't ..... wrote on Jul 10, 2007 10:29 AM:

" raising the tuitition to students and their parents like placing the burden of the private sector health uninsured by 'dry gulching' the small employer for the cost for health coverage? Isn't it just eaiser to burden one segment at a time. Until it is your turn to come up to bat. "

I am confused wrote on Jul 10, 2007 10:24 AM:

" Tuition is cheap compared to many other schools, the bar for GPA is very high for entrance into UWL, the content of those classes seems to be holding up that bar and luring actually too many students that seek entrance for those reasons. It seems to me that we as a State University have been doing a great job on the funds that have been provided in the past. Now tell me again what is the additional money needed for? You say 'expansion'. But isn't that a horse of a different color, and it rides in with many ramifications tied to it. How about a public local forum to discuss those issues? -Nestor "

No taxes for education wrote on Jul 10, 2007 10:12 AM:

" I do not want my tax money going towards education. Tax money should be spent on invading third world countries and building prisons! "

My what a PR move- II wrote on Jul 10, 2007 8:53 AM:

" Now with the help of the Tribune once again we are to ignore the the original 'diversity' reason to raise the additional money as the heading has been changed as we read, "acknowledging that we need more resources" (Gow). At least we may now talk about the real reason after they have attempted to manipulate us with reasons that have had little to do with their unbridled spending. -Nestor "

My what a PR move, although somewhat convaluted? I wrote on Jul 10, 2007 8:52 AM:

" These people led by our own Regent 'Brent on too many Boards' decided initially to ride the diversity steed into this 'expansion'. On the backs of students and their parents pocketbook. That did not get it done. That 'steed' deflated. Now amazingly, we are to forget that 12 million of the 15 million was for staff and space. The 3 million remaining was in my opinion the cost to raise the 12 for their bloated selves. Their budget has increased from 54 to 78 million since 1998. "

Wait a minute... wrote on Jul 10, 2007 8:43 AM:

" I thought the Democrats said that the Republicans were going to destroy education? But if they're going to fully fund the UW-L plan then how can that be? Oh, wait. You mean the Democrats lied again? Fascinating. I wonder how many lemmings in the La Crosse Democrat Party will still believe the Democrat lies. "

Agree with Gow wrote on Jul 10, 2007 8:35 AM:

" Tuition for UW-L is cheap when you compare it to other state schools in other states. I think raising tuition to fund this growth is a much better plan, than raising taxes. If our taxes get raised for this, I am sure UW-L will not see the money, as our government has a way of not giving education as much as they promise. It is a shame our representatives cannot get their hands out of education and embrace when a school is trying to take a pro active approach to providing a great education. "

xxx: Big Hit? wrote on Jul 10, 2007 7:07 AM:

" Gow is concerned with the UW system taking" a big hit" with the proposed $100 million trimmed, yet when over $200 million was WASTED on the computer system change over, the UW edu-crats feigned it was a drop in the UW systems bucket. I guess it all a matter of perspective "
