Wayne H. Burmester

MADISON — Wayne H. Burmester, 48, an angel who has gone to the other side, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 10, 1959, in Caledonia, Minn., the son of Harold and Charlotte (Schauble) Burmester.

Most people can count their best friends on one hand, but not Wayne. He said he needed both his hands and needed to borrow two more. Wayne always had a smile on his face and always left others with one as well. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. He loved life!

Wayne was a loyal Vikings fan and never gave up hope that some day they would win a Super Bowl. He was a good dancer and liked to kick up his heels and swing to a good “snappy” one once in a while. Hunting with his buddies was something in which he truly found great pleasure. For the last five years he looked forward to going camping with Cindy and their dog, Bailey, to their permanent site in Baraboo, Wis.

Wayne was baptized and confirmed at Zion Church in Eitzen, Minn. Wayne grew up in Caledonia and later relocated to the Madison area, and worked for 25 years as a maintenance man for Joe and Sally Hose.

He is survived by his soul mate, Cindy Roehl; daughters, Jessica and Samantha Burmester; grandchildren, Kiara, Tristen and Samarra; mother, Charlotte; his beloved dog, Bailey; one brother; two sisters; many nieces and nephews; and of course many, many “best” friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, a sister and a niece.

Wayne’s wishes were to be cremated and to have a private memorial with family and friends, which will be set at a later date. True sadness is for those people who never had the honor to meet this man. He was one of the greatest men to live and will be missed by all. “Meet you on the other side, Wayne.”

Gwendolyn Chapel Deters

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Gwendolyn Chapel Deters was born Dec. 2, 1918, in De Soto, Wis., the daughter of Harriet Chapel Joseph and Henry Joseph. Stricken with tuberculosis, Harriet moved to the family farm in Money Creek, Minn., where her parents cared for her and her daughter Gwen, until her death in 1924. Gwen lived with her maternal grandparents and graduated from Houston High School in 1936.

On June 7, 1939, Gwendolyn graduated from Winona Teachers College, where she completed requirements for an elementary education license with a major in intermediate and rural grades. She completed the two-year course of studies on campus in Winona, Minn., and internship year at Spring Grove Teacher Training Dept. She taught school for three years in Money Creek, Looney Valley, Minn., and Union Ridge, Minn.

While studying in Spring Grove, she met a young man named Albert F. (Bert) Deters. They were married June 7, 1941. She and Bert celebrated 52 years of marriage, living on the family farm west of Spring Grove. Bert died in 1993. Both children born to Bert and Gwen remain convinced that they won first place in the parental lottery. Bert and Gwen lived exemplary lives. They were caring parents who modeled the values they hoped to instill in their children: hard work, lively conversations around the family table, respect for others, responsibility for one’s words and actions, care for natural resources, frugality, and most of all, a generosity of spirit.

Gwen extended gracious hospitality to members of the Deters clan who returned to spend vacations on the family farm. All of her guests relished her home cooking, especially her bread-and-butter pickles and rhubarb crisp. Gwen appreciated flowers and enjoyed cultivating her floribunda roses. She gained satisfaction in freezing and canning the vegetables that Bert produced from his garden and having sufficient stores in the pantry to last through the winter and spring.

She loved to travel with her husband and made regular winter trips to Florida, Texas, Arizona, California and Utah. She also made several international trips to Canada, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Gwen treasured time spent with friends. She was actively involved with the Trinity Lutheran Church, PTA and Homemakers. She was a charter member of the Piecemakers Quilt Guild and was a volunteer at the Spring Grove Hospital and nursing home. With her husband, she was a founding member of Ma-Cal-Grove.

She is survived by her son, Howard, and his wife, Mary, of Spring Grove; her daughter, Joan Patterson, of Port-au-Prince, Haiti; three granddaughters and three grandsons; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Spring Grove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Roble Funeral Home in Spring Grove, and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
