Young man charged with assaulting senior bicyclist

.
Felony charges have been filed against a La Crosse man accused of striking a 70-year-old bicyclist with a plastic gas can and stealing his bicycle Wednesday morning.

A $25,000 cash bond was set Thursday in La Crosse County Circuit Court for Michael Brown, 26, of 1313 South Ave., on charges of felony aggravated battery and robbery as a habitual criminal.
The 70-year-old told La Crosse police he was on the 2100 block of South Avenue about 9 a.m. Wednesday, enroute to a haircut, when Brown struck him in the face with the gas can and knocked him off the bike, according to the criminal complaint.

Brown hit the man again with the gas can and punched him in the head, then fled east on South Avenue on the bicycle, according to the complaint.

The bicyclist had several facial cuts and complained of severe back pain but declined treatment at a hospital, according to the complaint. An unopened bottle of wine intended as a gift for his barber was shattered in the incident.

A probation agent saw the assault and followed Brown until he abandoned the bike in the parking lot of the probation office, 2350 South Ave., and continued on foot, according to the complaint. He was arrested in the alley of 900 Adams St.

Brown told police the bicyclist yelled a racial slur and threatened to hurt him if he did not move. He was protecting himself by taking the bicyclist to the ground, Brown said, but then walked away, according to the complaint.

He suggested the 70-year-old be charged with battery, according to the complaint.

When told of the probation agent’s account, Brown said he took the bike because he was angry at the man.

The gas can was not located.

La Crosse Circuit Judge Michael Mulroy continued the case to Thursday so Brown could hire an attorney.

" My my, look at all of you, you all presumed this was a caucasion individual who made the original comment. Maybe all of you are showing your true racist side, to presume this was not a personal evaluation from the perspective of an African American. It is possible the comments were made in reflecting on his/her own race as an African American and their disappointment on this unfortunate situation? Ever think about that prior to jumping to your conclusions and 'racist' calling? "

La Crosse has become a darker city that needs to see the light real fast and move em back outta here. For all the jerks calling people racist because of their comments. What about that famous Mayor Ray Nagin and his "Chocolate city" coment? Isn't that a racist comment? Where was all the outrage? My feeling is that blacks are more racist than ANY other race, because they are the ones spewing the hatred and bringing it up all the time! "

More crime is committed by whites. wrote on Jul 13, 2007 8:52 PM:

" Last year 67 pecent of all felonies in Lacrosse county were committed by whites, while only 29 percent were committed by Blacks. So overall whites do commit more crimes in Lacrosse cCounty than Blacks. Of course you look at the fact that 93 percent of the county's population is white and only five percent is Black it puts a little different spin on things, so the moral of the story is ...... both sides are correct whites do commit more crimes than blacks but blacks commit more crimes per capita. Things work better for them that way. Statisticlly, you are more likely to get a gunshot standing next to a young black male than a young white male. So does that make you a racist if you avoid standing next to young black males? We have our white crime. Do blacks commit more crimes than whites? If so, is it racist not to want them here? Final question - Are these questions racist? "

Drawing a conclusion about an entire race based upon the actions of a few is the basis for racism.
