Man charged with misdemeanors after rooftop standoff

.
A man who held police at bay at a downtown La Crosse apartment for nearly two hours Wednesday was charged Friday with three misdemeanors in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

Bradley A. Jones, 37, faces a charge of making a false 911 call and two counts of obstructing officers as a habitual criminal.
La Crosse Circuit Judge Michael Mulroy released Jones on a $1,000 signature bond and ordered him returned to Columbia County to complete a work-release sentence there.

Jones had been convicted last November on charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, operating a firearm while intoxicated and carrying a concealed weapon for reportedly firing shots from his former girlfriend’s vehicle on July 5, 2005, into heavy holiday traffic on Interstate 39/90/94 near Arlington, Wis..

La Crosse police were called to Jones’ apartment at 514 State St. on Wednesday morning by his mother, who said he was suicidal and possibly armed with a shotgun. Jones shut himself in the building for nearly two hours before he was caught atop the apartment’s roof, apparently trying to escape.

Police received two bogus calls during the standoff that Jones apparently made to distract them, according to police reports.

" Everyone has their own opinion, of Brad. Mine would be the exact opposite of yours. How many times has he been given a chance to work and decided it was easier to be the real Brad? "

" A wise man once said sometimes it is better to keep quiet and let one think you are a fool than to speak and erase all doubt...to the 4;39 poster,,my compassion is not ignorance,I have been to the school of hard knocks,, I now have 4 children and make six figures a year.* years of college and to have someone talk when they know little or nothing about this case is very disheartening..You must be a saint so i willtrust your words..(sarcasm) goodnight "

" This was in my backyard. I agree with the earlier post about your compassion is really ignorance. Youll figure it out someday. "

" I am sure the Tribune was not able to print every detail about this person... but the few details printed are enoungh to wonder why let him out on such a low bond? The guy may be a great guy and just made "several" mistakes... my concern is that one of these "mistakes" may eventually get someone killed. Yes, he was not carrying a gun this time, but how did the police know this? He should still be in jail or at least held to get some help for his issues. "

" WHY is this guy out on the streets? Why have a stand off? You know what let the Whakos that "want to die" just off themselves and be done with it. Survival of the fitest. He may be happier dead. "

" all you concerned citizens are a joke!! Brad is a very nice guy who is going through tough times and all I hear is (shoot him,,lock him up,,tear gas him) put the shoe on the other foot.If you people knew only half of the crap that happens right in your backyard you would freak out...It is a sad day that i have to post a blog to counter your %$#@$%*&, There I feel better now..Don"t be so quick till you know all the facts. " I don't understand why violent criminals aren't held accountable for their actions. If he had an alcohol or drug violation, they would throw the bench at him. I realize that he has not gone to court yet, but I'll bet that he doesn't serve one day in jail. "

" I am not real impressed by a $1000 signature bond. I am thinking this guy might need to be locked up in some kind of place where his mental issues can be dealt with. If something happens once, that's one thing. Twice is a pattern. Habitual is a problem. Someone get this guy the help he needs, and keep him away from the general population until his issues can be addressed. Also, whether or not it was a gun shouldn't matter. Someone with this guys disposition and criminal record shouldn't be allowed to carry a butter knife. "

" Next have his mom go over there to investigate and then if it is a real emergency call the police. What a waste of the police's time for this guy. I wonder what the expense to the taxpayers will be on this one. "

He didn't have a gun this time. wrote on Jul 14, 2007 10:02 AM:

" The only reason it was a stand off was because the police decided to "stand off" and not go in and grab the guy. We can't blame him for that and we can't blame them for making sure all were safe. Other than try to distract the police with fake 911 calls he really didn't do anything. Have we ever used the armored personel carrier? It probably doesn't go upstairs so it wouldn't have helped much. "

What the? wrote on Jul 14, 2007 9:40 AM:

" Work release program in Columbia County? He needs lock up. Misdemeanors for a stand off with guns invloved? This thing reeks To those who want to heal his mental issues.... a criminal is a criminal and a drunk is a drunk. Dont waste the effort and my tax dollars on this waste of skin. "

" next moron to have a so called "standoff"... tear gas the place, bust a couple of bullets into the kneecap, and call it a day. Oh, and let's see the bearcat too! Thank you! "

I also hope: wrote on Jul 14, 2007 2:36 AM:

" that he gets charged monetarily for the expenses involved with this standoff. But as always, I'm sure that the law-abiding, taxpaying, contributors of society will end up footing the bill. He probably has "mental" issues that prohibit him from responsibility in this area. "

WHY!? wrote on Jul 14, 2007 1:51 AM:

" Why is he still out on the streets??? Apparently he can not control his drinking - save us all money - put him on Prozac or just let him kill himself before he hurts anyone else! "
