UW officials and legislators must reach an understanding

.
Why does there seem to be such enmity between Republican legislators and the University of Wisconsin System?

During the past several years, the University System has been subjected to budget cuts higher than many other agencies. Republicans have criticized the university central administrators for what they see as waste, and some legislators have been unhappy with what they see as overly liberal professors and speakers on campuses.
But what is at the heart of the disputes? We asked Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch that question during an editorial board session Friday.

The West Salem Republican replied that the priorities of the University Board of Regents and central administration are not the same as the priorities of legislators, and that makes it difficult for the two to see eye to eye.

He said legislators also are unhappy about tuition increases.

What would it take to get the two sides closer together? What if key legislators, regents and UW officials could sit down and discuss their differences and the areas on which they agree?

We’d be happy to do whatever we could to facilitate such a meeting. Wine them and dine them. Put them on a riverboat on a beautiful late summer or early fall evening.

And then lock them in a meeting room the next day and not let them out until they understand a little more about the other’s philosophy and point of view.

We could do much worse — and we will do much worse until we can stop the war of words between one end of State Street in Madison and the other.

" My how you attempt to construct a coral around this issue. If it were only that simple. Actually liberal professors is hardly near the crux of this bloated funding discussion. As always you do your best to even direct the conversation on this and many other issues. In the stories you print, the content on those articles, and the almost total lack of alternative views that you do not seek out. In the locker room of a Football Team it would be referred to as 'blocking'. BTW, the footbal stadium fight is not over with either. -Nestor "

" I feel it my right and duty to inform the private sector of government pay/benefits. Every time I teach one of the private sector workers how unfair the field is I have won. The problem is that those encompassed in the system do not want these facts, figures, and statistics shared with the public. That is why they hide $17k for Chancellors under housing allowance, and another inexplicable $10k for an annuity each year for the Lax Superintendents of Schools on top of his already disproportuante 11.7% contribution for WRS retirement? -Nestor "

" I'm all for higher education, I just believe that a person should pay for it themselves. I went to school using the GI Bill, grants, and loans. There's no reason anyone needs a free ride. If you can't join the military and have them pay for school you can apply for grants and loans. If a person isn't bright enough to find a way to pay for their education, then there's always jobs available picking fruit and digging ditches "

" Could it possibly be because the board of regents has spent their time over the last 5 years trying to get domestic benefits angering republicans when they know they were not going to get them. Instead the regents should have been fighting for smaller cuts in state funding. With the regents fighting for benefits it only made it easier for the republicans to cut state funding. Both sides are to blame for these tuition increases and both brought on these problems to themselves y their own actions. "

" What Mr. Gow's high six figure base salary was when he was hired. That academia has been shaking wildly the pom-poms of, "you have to pay to hire the best". That there were 60 plus applicants for the job. That there is another $17k for example in his publically accessible pay package that they have deemed to call a 'housing allowance'. You cannot print the entire story, although lets allow it to at least be 'posted'. Then you wonder why some have trouble with their spending? -Nestor "

" You get angry that this guy is paid $47k per year. When he travels mostly out of town, without his family , and works 12 months. The average teacher salalry in the Lacrosse School System is $47k. If you want to get angry remember their smarmy, almost covert post retirement helath coverage program. Or the fact that they are able to receive almost $1700 per month retirement after on term. We could be more specific on the amount except they have legislated secrecy especially on this retirment so that you and I cannot find out? FACT!!! Now rant away. -Nestor "

" Republicans are upset about tuition increases??? Talk about lack of accountability! Legislators cut the UW budget. Instead of slashing instructors and closing buildings, UW fills the hole with tuition. Then legislators have the gall to blame the UW for the natural results of their budget-gutting. Wow. And your newspaper buys into this faulty reasoning?! "

TO: Why? wrote on Jul 16, 2007 8:49 AM:

" You live in a vacuum. Teachers pay have to be scrutinized on an individual basis. Although benefits, now there is an easy argument. Our local Teachers receive a 11.7% contribution to retirement. that allow them to retire at 55 at or soon more than they made while working. We then pay them post retirement health coverage that statistics show the overwhelming portion of private sector workers will not ever experience. Matter of fact the number is the private sector are dwindling. Then we have allowed those same Teachers to cover their heterosexual partners with health coverage. With no titled or deeded joint ownership to reflect their commitment. The disparity has only grown the last past twenty years. Also just as important these bloated benefits encompass almost all schools employees and support staff. So don't just whine about teachers being scrutinized. "

Jesse and Festus wrote on Jul 16, 2007 8:33 AM:

" A couple points: First, why should people through their tax dollars be forced to pay for anyone else's education in the first place? Second, the professors and speakers on campus should, logically, consist of roughly the same general make-up of the state as a whole. If this is not the case, a political agenda is being pushed, and no one should be forced to advance a political agenda they disagree with. "

rprp wrote on Jul 16, 2007 8:29 AM:

" The UW system has abused the taxpayers for years and as soon as a legislator challenge the spending versus the taxes the teachers union gets upset. If the truth be known I feel the teachers performance per dollar would be upsetting. "

Why? wrote on Jul 16, 2007 7:49 AM:

" It's rather obvious, isn't it? Because Republicans have a pathological hatred for teachers and unions. They like to claim that teachers don't really work and, after all, they get three months off each year, they make too much money, etc. etc. ad nauseum. But of course, they don't explain why they themselves aren't teachers, if teaching is such a cushy job! Republican like to pick on teachers and education because it's easy -- like taking candy from a baby. Republicans are bullies and have no appreciation of education. Teachers have the most important job there is and yet Republicans treat them like crap. Need we say more? "

" If you really want to help then you might want to start holding Mike Huebsch accountable in your newspaper. Call him out by name instead of using "Republican Leadership". You could hold him accountable by endorsing someone else each election until he gets the idea. If he starts getting pressure at home then he'll change his tune. The editorial board of the Trib is complicit in UW-L cuts (and other boneheaded policies supported by Mike Huebsch) because you fail to hold Mike accountable for his actions. Shame on you! "
