Felon faces theft, firearm charges

.
PORTAGE, Wis. — A La Crosse man accused of wandering off work release from the Columbia County Jail and later starting a standoff with

La Crosse police has been charged in Columbia County with auto theft and possession of a firearm by a felon.
Bradley Jones, 37, was given a $2,500 cash bond Wednesday for the new charges of motor vehicle theft and possession

of a firearm by a felon, both as

a repeat offender. He already had a $2,500 cash bond for escape.

He also had a $1,000 signature bond issued July 13 in

La Crosse County on charges of making a false 911 call and two counts of obstructing officers as a habitual criminal, but was not released because of a Department of Corrections probation and parole hold.

According to a criminal complaint, Jones walked away from the Columbia County Recycling Center July 9, then took a vehicle July 11 that the owner said had a shotgun inside.

A few days later, a relative in La Crosse told police Jones was suicidal and had a weapon. Police surrounded a downtown La Crosse apartment and managed to capture Jones on the rooftop about two hours later as he apparently tried to escape, according to reports.

Police in Viroqua, Wis., found the stolen truck July 19, with two weapons inside.

Jones was serving nine months in jail after a Columbia County jury convicted him Nov. 16, 2006, of second-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm while intoxicated and carrying a concealed weapon.

Jones was accused of shooting a handgun out of the

window of a vehicle being

driven by his ex-girlfriend in heavy traffic July 5, 2005, on Interstate 39/90/94 near Arlington, Wis.

If convicted on the three new Columbia County charges, Jones could receive up to 26 years in prison. He also could have his probation revoked in Columbia County and might face an additional 17 years in prison. He is in Columbia County Jail pending a Sept. 11 court appearance.

" We should be tolerant of a man shooting a gun into traffic? How about the teenager that killed the principal? Should we be "tolerant" of his lifestyle? "

" Morality has nothing to do with firing a gun into traffic???!!!! Are you crazy? Morality has everything to do with it. "

" Morality doesn't having anything to do with someone firing a gun into traffic. Are you suggesting it's fine to fire gunshots randomly, and if a bullet hits someone it's no problem? Wow. "

" You completely missed the posters point. In fact, your post sort of makes his point for him. It is your morality that tells you this is wrong, not his. "

" Tolerance for his "lifestyle"? He fired a gun on the interstate! Someone could have been injured or died...did you read the article? "

Tolerance Needed wrote on Jul 27, 2007 9:12 AM:

" Where are the cries for tolerance now? Whenever someone dared to pass judgment on behavior they perceived to be immoral, they were met with cries of bigotry and intolerance. Do we only believe in tolerance for behavior we agree with? That is kind of silly-anyone is tolerant of behavior they find acceptable. The true test is whether we can be tolerant of behavior we disagree with. So, who will be the first to call for tolerance for this mans alternative lifestyle? "

" It looks like this man is not a danger to anyone but himself. Seems like he may just need some counseling. Will extending his time in the system really solve anything? He just needs to be nurtured and valued. I come back to that old deer hunting slogan "Let him go and let him grow." "
