Janyce Y. Anderson
GALESVILLE, Wis. — Janyce Y. Anderson, 81, of Galesville died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007.

Jan was born to Lloyd and Nina Kruse in Winona, Minn., and raised in Centerville, Wis. After high school, she attended business college for two years. She then married Paul as he was enlisting in the U.S. Navy. The two of them traveled around the United States to various duty stations over the next two decades. After their journeys, they settled in St. Paul and then Rochester, Minn. They then built a home to retire in Galesville.

Jan selflessly devoted herself to her family, friends and community. She regularly volunteered at local hospitals and many social and religious organizations. Bird-watching, singing, reading, cooking, creating art and spending time with loved ones were ways Jan loved to spend her time.

She is survived by a son, Paul; brothers, Maurice and Ronald; a sister, Nancy; and her grandchildren, Charles, Elizabeth, David and Kathleen.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith; her husband, Paul; and a son, Christopher.

Jan will always remain in our hearts and thoughts as kind, loving and generous.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville, with the Rev. Thomas Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Centerville. Friends may call from noon until the time of service Friday at the church. Zwickey Funeral Homes, Galesville Chapel, assisted the family.

Rod Fortney

DODGEVILLE, Wis. — Rod Fortney, 62, passed away at Upland Hills Rehab Center in Dodgeville on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, after discovering a brain tumor May 11, 2007.

He was born March 12, 1945, to Elvin and Florence (Wilson) Fortney at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, Wis. He was raised on his family’s Century farm south of Viroqua in the town of Franklin, Wis. He was confirmed at Franklin Lutheran Church in 1960. He graduated from Viroqua High School in 1963.

He married Judith Blum on July 3, 1965, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. He then graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. In August 1968, he began his 39-year teaching career at the Iowa-Grant School District. The first 24 years at the Livingston Grade School, the next eight at the Iowa-Grant Elementary Middle School, and the remaining years substituting at both Iowa-Grant and Dodgeville school districts. He was honored with Grant County science teacher of the year in 1978.

After his family, his next love was coaching of which he coached many students over his 38-year career. After winning the Division III boys state cross-country championship in 2000, he was honored with D-III coach of the year. In addition to cross country, he coached track, basketball and golf; taking the golf team to state in 2006. Rod thoroughly enjoyed watching young people excel in everything they pursued.

He is survived by his wife, Judy of Dodgeville; three children, Jill (Randy) of Mason City, Iowa, Troy (Meg) of Ballwin, Mo., and Brad (Kris Whitman) of Big Lake, Minn.; two grandchildren, Tyler and Rachel Fortney of Big Lake; brothers, Kendall (Patti) of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Robert (Dianne) of West Salem, Wis.; and sister, Carolyn Barnhart (Larry) of Menomonie, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas; and Judy’s parents, Joseph Blum and Loren and Gertrude Unseth.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville, with Pastor Steve Kottke officiating. Friends may call from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the Soman-Larson Funeral Home in Montfort, Wis., and from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church Saturday morning. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in memory of Rod Fortney.

James Donald Graff

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. — Mr. James Donald Graff, 63, of Panama City Beach went to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug 13, 2007.

James had worked as a press operator for many years. He enjoyed fishing, sports and spending time with his family and friends. James had served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Woodlawn United Methodist Church of Panama City Beach.

Mr. Graff was preceded in death by his son, Michael A.; and great-grandson, Wesley James. Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Carol Ann Graff; four sons, Wayne Leudke (Karla) of St. Louis, James H. Graff (Lynne), Todd F. Graff (Tracie), both of Shakopee, Minn., and Frank R. Graff (Sandra) of Panama City Beach; grandchildren, Tamii, Nikita, Zach, Rieley, Tanner, Tawnie, Taytum, Tahlia, Mikey and Logan; and his great-granddaughter, Brenna; and two sisters, Gennie Drievold (Curt) of Sun City, Ariz., and Lucy Bruring (Harold) of La Crosse.

Memorialization will be by cremation. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at the Woodlawn United Methodist Church of Panama City Beach, with the associate Pastor Steve Irwin officiating. Helen Marie Loomis

Helen Marie Loomis, 75, of La Crosse died on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center.

She was born on Jan. 9, 1932, in De Soto, Wis., to Joseph and Olive “Polly” (Olson) Wanberg. Helen grew up on the family farm in Ferryville, Wis., and attended Viroqua High School. She married Lloyd R. Loomis Jr. on July 20, 1950, in Lansing, Iowa. He preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1999.

Helen was an avid reader and enjoyed camping and going to the casino with her daughter, Mary. She also enjoyed volunteering and working at the voting booth. Helen’s door was always open for family and friends to have a cup of coffee, a bite to eat or to stay overnight.

She is survived by her eight children, Pam (Jim) McDonald of Oviedo, Fla., Mike Loomis of Irvine, Calif., Dave (Terry) Loomis of San Diego, Jeff Loomis of La Crosse, Mary (Brian) Sullens of Broken

Bow, Neb., Doug Loomis of La Crosse, Jo Lynn (Joe) Rihn of Onalaska, Wis., and Nicole (La Mont) Ross of Rochester, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan Grimsled of Ferryville; and many nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives; and many special friends.

In addition to her husband, Lloyd, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Arlen Grimsled.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Pastor Scott Skogen will officiate. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and again Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.

Sylvan Mahlum

LA CROSSE/ONALASKA, Wis. — Sylvan Mahlum, 89, died at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007.

He was born June 25, 1918, in Holmen, Wis., to Olaf and Olga (Johnson) Mahlum. Sylvan married Ruth Koss on Oct. 4, 1941. Prior to his retirement, Sylvan had worked for the Leider Lumber Co., for over

30 years. He had belonged to the First Lutheran Church of Onalaska for over 65 years. He was an excellent husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Ruth; a son, Sherman Mahlum of Onalaska; a granddaughter, Reannen Mahlum of Onalaska; a great-grandson, Landon of Onalaska; and a very close family friend, Judy Nimmo.

Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kathryn Knudson and Delores Koss; and two brothers, Floyd and Burton Mahlum.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, 410 Main St., in Onalaska. The Rev. Breck McHan will officiate, and burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 6 p.m. today at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, Onalaska, and from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.

Barbara A. Mickschl Meinking

Barbara A. Mickschl Meinking, 43, died at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, Gillette Street Chapel.

Bernard A. ‘Ben’ Moss Jr.

BLOOMINGTON, Wis. — Bernard A. “Ben” Moss Jr., 64, of Bloomington died at home after a short battle with cancer on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Bloomington. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. The Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.

Mary Ann Nunemacher

HOKAH, Minn. — Mary Ann Nunemacher, 85, of Hokah, died at her home on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hokah. The Rev. Joseph P. Pete will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Hokah. Friends may call from 4 until 7:30 p.m. Friday at the church, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m., and again Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. A complete obituary will follow in Thursday’s Tribune.

Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent, Minn., is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mabel L. Ziegler

Mabel L. Ziegler, 89, of La Crosse, died on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at the Hillview Health Care Center.

She was born in La Crosse on Jan. 13, 1918, to Charles and Minta White. Mabel married Robert Polley, and they later divorced. She married Elmer Ziegler on July 6, 1950, in La Crosse. He preceded her in death on July 9, 2002. Mabel had worked as a switchboard supervisor at St. Francis Medical Center for 20 years, retiring in 1983. She was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Mabel is survived by six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Richard Williams of Crown Point, Ind.; and a sister-in-law, Irma Starch of La Crosse.

In addition to her husband, Elmer; she was preceded in death by two daughters, Alyce Mae Williams and Mary Lou Knudtson; a grandson, Jeffrey Williams; a son-in-law, Harold Knudtson; three brothers, Lloyd, Glen and William White; and a sister, Pluma Niebuhr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Asbury United Methodist Church. The Rev. Scott McMurray will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hillview Health Care Center or the donor’s choice. The Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jean Zube

VIROQUA, Wis. — Betty Jean Zube, 76, of Viroqua died on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007, while on vacation with her family in Hawaii.

Betty was born June 29, 1931, in Viroqua to Guy and Merle (Fish) Primmer. She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1949, attended Vernon County Teacher’s College and worked as a teacher’s aide for the developmentally disabled at Davis School in Viroqua. On Feb. 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Paul Zube. They lived on Paul’s home farm all their married years.

Betty was a CNA in the OB Department at Vernon Memorial Hospital for many years. She also worked for Americore and the Vernon County Unit on Aging. She was a member of the Two Ridges Homemakers Club and was a 4-H leader for over 25 years. Betty was the knitting and crocheting superintendent at the fair for many years and was an avid bowler for over 30 years. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was a member of the Joanna Circle. She was also a member of the National Cheviot

Sheep Breeders Association, Cattlemen’s Association and was a FFA alumnus.

Betty is survived by her children, Mary (Jeff) Reed of North Pole, Alaska, Steven (Sharon) of Waupaca, Wis., Stanley (Linda) of Viroqua, and Scott (Teresa) of Kiel, Wis.; six grandchildren, Sarah (Jon) Martin, Peter Reed, Calvin and Wesley Zube, Carl (Jenny) Zube and Robbie Zube; and two great-grandchildren, Allison and Madilyn Zube. She is further survived by one sister, Joan (Tom) Hirsch; four brothers, Loren (Jenese), Orvis (Janice), Don (Lillian) and Adrian (Lynn) Primmer; as well as many other relatives and friends, including her “extended family” in Alaska, Albert and Lynda Jenks, Marvel and Dan Dement, Linda Gregory, David and Luci Jones, Dee Yokum and Clare and Tom Kuble.

In addition to her parents and mother- and father-in-law, Carl and Mabel Zube; she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; one son, Frederick; one brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Cleo Primmer; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Emery and Betty Zube.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Pastor Lindsay Jordan will officiate, with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St. (Hwy. 56), in Viroqua. (Due to road construction, please use the parking lot entrance ½ block south of Hwy 56.) Friends may also call after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Online condolences may be offered at www.vosseteigfuneralhomes.com.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Toys for Tots Program or the Vernon County Agriculture Society (to be used toward construction of a new building at the fairgrounds.)
