UW-L ranks high in best colleges report

.
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has again been ranked among the Midwest’s best universities, according to U.S. News and World Report.

“America’s Best Colleges 2008,” published each year by the news magazine, ranks UW-L No. 3 in the Midwest among public universities offering master’s degrees, and No. 22 among public and private institutions offering master’s degrees.
The ranking is not new for UW-L, which has been honored as one of the top three Midwest public schools since 2002.

This is important news for students and faculty, UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow said Friday. But, it’s also important for the Coulee Region.

“Fifty percent of the alumni we have on file reside and work in the state of Wisconsin,” Gow said. “We are educating the future leaders of our region.”

UW-L views itself as an important component of La Crosse, Gow said.

“A strong community looking to move forward needs a strong university,” Gow said.

Four other University of Wisconsin system schools were on the list with UW-L, along with Winona State University, across the river in Minnesota.

Viterbo University, a private school in La Crosse, received a third tier ranking from the report.

" Hogwash! How much did it cost to get a ranking like that? "

" Number 3 now but when they keep packing more and more students into the classroom that number is going to get worse. I am a student at UWL and I agree we are a top school but when you have students who can't get into classes they need because there are too many students it's time to cut back. And to solve that problem is the government needs to increase the available $$$. As for the minority issue...leave it alone, race should not affect if you get in or not, grades should. If you can't get or keep the grades then leave. "

" Your saying UWL is discriminating letting in minorities into their institution? I doubt that. "

Well, which one is it? wrote on Aug 18, 2007 11:13 AM:

" When it works for a specific argument (mostly in Dane Co.) we hear, a problem with those people with degrees are moving out of state and trouble retaining them. Now, we here the Chancellor lauding that 50% of the Alumni work in WI. Which one is it? Is it bad organization or do they once again think that the working class peon taxpayers have short term memory loss. Very confusing, although amusing! "

" UWL could be #1 if it only had more minorities. UWL needs to take action to fill the student body with minorities if they want to improve that ranking. "

" Having gone to UW-L for undergraduate and graduate studies I can attest to the excellence of the University. Graduates of this school are prepared to compete at a global level. The biology and chemistry departments are incredible. They have many young professors that bring excitement and up-to-date information to their student body. My son is a graduate of the UW system and my daughter is entering UW-L this fall. Thank you everyone at UW-L for the greatest education in the world!!! "

" I guess that blows a hole in the ole, 'you have to pay to attract the best'. You can't have it both ways. One day you scream that the UWL pay is far inferior to those around us iin other schools, and the next you use the ole 'attract' comment? "
