Toole will lay foundation for 2008

.
Loggers general manager Chris Goodell will start building his 2008 roster around a 6-foot, 165-pound utility infielder, and that’s fine with him.

Justin Toole, signed on a 10-day contract, emerged as one of the Loggers’ most reliable players this summer. Next year, Goodell would like to see Toole assume the role of everyday second baseman and team leader.
“Justin Toole exemplifies a lot of what we like to see out of a Loggers player,” Goodell said. “He’s a solid, scrappy ballplayer and he does everything pretty well. You could look at him as one of the leaders back, really.”

But who will Toole lead? Outfielder Brett Jackson is eligible to return, but his breakout season with the Loggers attracted offers from the Cape Cod. On the pitching staff, reliever Jordan Herbert and left-handed starter/reliever Aaron Dott are priorities.

After that, there are only question marks. Veterans like outfielders Eric Thames and Evan Bigley, catcher Mike Brenly and pitcher Justin Walker are draft candidates. Pitcher Victor Black and Trevor Coleman might drop in for a week or two and go back to Team USA for full summers.

Here are four players to build around:

Justin Toole, 2B

2007 recap: Toole, a sophomore from Iowa, signed a 10-day contract in May. He stepped up and earned an everyday role, playing in 59 games and earning the team’s Gold Glove Award while batting .242 with one homer, 15 RBI and 10 stolen bases. He also led the team in sacrifice bunts (17) as the primary No. 2-hole batter.

2008 projected role: Toole would return as the everyday second baseman and team leader. Ideally, the Loggers will sign enough offensive talent for the top of their lineup to have Toole bat seventh or eighth.

Brett Jackson, OF

2007 recap: Jackson, a freshman from California, led the team with a .460 on-base percentage, batting .343 while taking 23 walks, and added some power with two homers. Jackson’s season was shortened to 42 games because of a knee injury.

2008 projected role: If Jackson decides to return to La Crosse instead of accepting an offer from a Cape Cod League team, he’ll hold down center field and bat first or third in the lineup. Jackson seemed to thrive in the grind of summer baseball and was on a hitting tear before his injury. A healthy Jackson would be an All-Star and MVP candidate next year.

Jordan Herbert, RHP

2007 recap: Herbert, who hits 91-92 mph with his fastball, was used to set up closer Don Erdall and appeared in 24 games, second in team history. Herbert, a sophomore from UW-Milwaukee, went 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA and struck out 29 batters in 23 1/3 innings. He also walked 18.

2008 projected role: The Loggers will pencil Herbert in as the closer, but he must cut down on his walks to be effective in that role. Otherwise, Herbert will again be a setup man.

Aaron Dott, LHP

2007 recap: Dott emerged as the gem of a large group of replacement pitchers the team had to sign starting in mid-season because of injuries. The freshman from UW-Whitewater appeared in 10 games, including three starts, and went 2-2 with a 1.63 ERA. He threw a five-inning shutout July 26.

2008 projected role: Spot starter/reliever. Much will depend on how many innings he throws next spring at Whitewater and how his arm feels when he returns to La Crosse. Lefties with velocity and control like Dott are valuable commodities in the Northwoods League.

Here are six wait-and-see players:

Eric Thames, OF,Projected draft pick

Evan Bigley, OF,Projected draft pick

Mike Brenly, C, Projected draft pick

Victor Black, P, Team USA candidate

Trevor Coleman, C, Team USA candidate

Justin Walker, P, Borderline draft pick

" good MVL players are experienced and know how to play the game....how to bunt, how to run bases, they put the ball in play with runners in scoring position. those things win and lose baseball games. thats what the NWL is missing, its all young kids learning how to play the game. if you go talent vs talent, the NWL wins, you go good baseball players vs good baseball players, the MVL will compete every single time. these are guys who have played for years with a wood bat and know how to pitch to a wood bat. NWL players arent even close in that respect. "

" I said former MVL players. Servais, Ghelfi, Williams, Colburn, I can think of about 7 more off the top of my head but can't remember their names. 1 player from Viroqua, 2 from Prairie du Chien , 4 from the Iowa team. There are many more. Come on guys help me out. "

" If upper management in any company or organization can bring in talented workers then it is up to the management staff to get them to produce efficiently and consistently. Boyer does not do that at all. Goodell brought in a very talented core of players (ask anyone associated with the team)and Boyer did nothing with that talent. He did not get them to work together, he did not demand they elevate their game, he did not offer any sort of authority in the dugout. This is not 100% on Goodell. Yes he did hire Boyer and that was a HUGE mistake. Goodell deserves to put another manager in place, someone with some fire and with the backbone to make a hard decision and not worry about hurting or upsetting someones feelings. "

" Some of you have to realize that after going through four managers already and still only having one playoff season... I don't think the manager is the problem. I don't think Goodell knows what he is doing or how to put a team together its not about 7 all stars its about putting a "team" together you could put 9 all-stars out there playing for themselves and any other 9 guys that want to win as a team and the guys playing as a team will win 8 out of 10. I think we've given goodell enough chance to put a winner together and he can't why not try someone else... "

" If the NWL put together an All Star team and played your MVL All Star team it would be them 8 out of 10...oh and if your aunt had some...yadda yadda yadda. Comparing the players in the MVL and the NWL is apples and oranges. Yes a handful of guys in the MVL could play in the league and yes some guys in the NWL caught a break and are not as good as some MVL players. You are just coming off as a bitter wanna be who didn't get a shot at playing in the NWL. "

" There are at least 10 guys in the MVL who have played D1 and about 40 who have played D2 and D3 ball. There are also numerous players who have been drafted or signed as free agents. Do you know what the difference between a D1, D2 and D3 player is, not much!! It is all about getting a chance, sometimes just having the "right" name. If the MVL put together an All Star team made up of players in the MVL, it would beat the Loggers 8 out of 10 times. Do your research before you start spouting off!!!!!!! "

Scholarship wrote on Aug 14, 2007 2:58 PM:

" Just because you get a scholarship or get drafted doesn't make you a good baseball player. Many of these kid have raw ability, but they don't have the brains yet. That is why they come to the NWL, to learn the game and hopefully earn a spot in the Cape or make it to the pros where there can continue to develop. Many times kids who recieve scholarships or get drafted don't live up the expections. MVL is men playing baseball (average ages are 19-30) where the NWL is made up of kids who are trying to develop. "

Amateur wrote on Aug 14, 2007 1:09 PM:

" The MVL is a beer league. You're kidding yourself if you think those teams could consistently--68 games, not one meaningless exhibition--compete in the Northwooods. Remind me how many draft picks or D-I scholarship guys are in the MVL again? "

loggers wrote on Aug 14, 2007 12:41 PM:

" It was great to watch local guys play the first 3 years but that was the perfect time to get really good local players on the Loggers team. In the last two years and years coming I do not there is that many talented players like they had the first couple years that could play for any summmer college league. The Logger brought in crap for local talent last and this year and it showed. "

Why? wrote on Aug 14, 2007 8:36 AM:

" Cause Lefty is smoking something and it isn't good. Joel you see alot of baseball but your projections are laughable. If Toole comes back which I highly doubt if Boyer is still managing, why would he be moved out of the 2-hole. He was an ideal hitter in the 2 spot. Bunts very well and can hit and run, has some speed. All is a moot point unless the Logger staff pull the plug on Boyer Ball. Goodell brought in great talent (7 all stars) but the field manager failed to utilize it. Local talent in the region? Yes there might be 2 or 3 guys that could play. "

Lefty wrote on Aug 14, 2007 6:30 AM:

" La Crescent, La Crosse, and CCV made the state tourny 3 of the 8 teams there will be from the MVL. Sparta a team that played and beat the loggers this season finished forth in the league behind the three teams that made state. Shows you how good those great players that Chris Goodell brings in really are when the team that finishes 4th in a league of local college players beat them. When not bring in more local guys look at all there season record holders David Schultz, Coon Valley. Dale Mueller,Travis Check, Joe Korneta, La Crosse. Josh Schultz, Desoto also had there winningest year in 2004. I say run goodell out of town what can boyer do with guys that get beat up on by local kids in a big league like the northwoods is suppose to be. "
