Goodell to start managerial search immediately

.
La Crosse Loggers general manager Chris Goodell said he hasn’t zeroed in on a candidate to replace Rick Boyer. He does expect to have the job filled well before the leaves start changing color.

Boyer resigned Thursday after two seasons as Loggers manager. The franchise is searching for its fourth manager is six years.
“We’ll start immediately,” Goodell said. “We don’t have a definite date but ... because of the recruiting process, which heats up when players go back to school, we want (the manager) to be part of that process.”

Goodell said his job description for a manager is basically the same as it has been since 2002. The difference this time is the emphasis on recruiting.

“We want to go out and find somebody who can bring the recruiting ties and to help us on a national level,” Goodell said. “And also someone who is a strong in-game manager. We feel we’ve done an awful lot of things well in five years but we haven’t won as many games as we’d like and we want to address that.”

Goodell said he will start the search using several avenues.

“We’ll definitely talk to our main contacts in the league and we’ll take a look at the league database of people who have submitted their names,” Goodell said. “We’ll do that before we go into the wide open.”

Loggers second baseman Justin Toole, expected to be one of the team’s leaders in 2008, said he’d like to work with a knowledgeable coach who can keep players motivated for 68 games.”

“It definitely helps to have a guy that is hungry to win and will get after you,” Toole said. “The thing that coach Boyer did is, he’s a great motivator and kept us positive when we were struggling. Having someone you can relate to is a big thing, because you’re there for 2½ months and you’re bound to have some slumps.”

Boyer said he recommended assistant coach Scott Gillitzer, Prairie du Chien, Wis., native who played five seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, as his replacement.

Gillitzer was recently accepted to graduate school at Winona State University and said he hasn’t decided on his plans for next season. He is considering taking summer classes.

“I’m not sure at this point about next year because I don’t know how much time I will have,” Gillitzer said. “My mind isn’t totally made up. I told Chris and (Director of Baseball Operations) Ben (Kapanke) I’d keep my options open but I know they have to go ahead and get started on next year.”

Viterbo baseball coach Chad Miller was named Northwoods League Manager of the Year in 2005 after leading Thunder Bay to the league championship.

“There has been no discussion of me being involved with the La Crosse Loggers next season,” said Miller, who was an assistant coach for the Loggers in 2004. “I would say that if they approached me, I would have to think seriously about it. I would consider it, no question, but it’s up to them.”

" It's amazing how little many of you know in regards to running a succesful NWL franchise. Goodell is as good as it gets in this league and maybe even pro ball. Do you think the Kapankes knew everything about how to build a franchise when they started? The answer is no. It was Goodell who was and is the backbone. Take it from someone in the league - the talent has been as good as any others, the coaching has been the downfall. If Goodell is going anywhere it's to professional baseball, because he's that good! " Well its official. Yes the Loggers finished another good year at the gate but wanting way much more in terms high quality baseball wins, and Championships for La Crosse. Good news: a long lost cousin of Vince Lombardi is beaming down from the Hall of Fame to lead the Loggers and help build the Loggers into NWL Title Town. Well see how smart team is and if Vinny Jr gets a shot "

" That tells most people (except the thick headed LaCrosse fan) that the GM did his job by finding very good players. The manager failed to take that talent and mold it into a winner. Rick will do a good job as an ambassador for the Loggers. If you are calling for the GM to be fired you obviously don't have a clue about baseball. "

" It doesn't matter if you have 7 all-stars on the team if you can't play together and win some games. What is your definition of success? Mine is being on top of the division each year. Apparently yours is as long as there are all-stars on the team your happy! "

" Get rid of the guy who brought a league high number of all-stars to LaCrosse and who also is responsible for having the 2nd highest attendance total in the league. YUP! That's who the Loggers should get rid of. Why do the idiot baseball "fans" feel the need to comment on this blog and make the rest of the town look ignorant? Boyer is the one who couldn't get it done. "

never make it? wrote on Aug 24, 2007 3:00 PM:

" "This is the exact reason this League and Team will never make it in La Crosse" --What in the name of Ty Cobb are you talking about? The Loggers just finished their fifth year and were second in the league in attendance. Five years is not never. Oh, and they have a 10-year lease with the city. Get facts straight before you type. "

" "One of the most successful Franchise's in the COUNTRY". WOW, I didn't realize the $647.34 that the loggers made last year was better than the Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, and every other "Franchise" in the "Country". This is the exact reason this League and Team will never make it in La Crosse. Too many Idiots that have no clue what they are talking about are running and supporting this GOLDMINE of a team. "

Good Question wrote on Aug 24, 2007 7:58 AM:

" Goodell has been here from the start and this team has stunk it up. The tired cliche' promotions are becoming dull. 10 minutes between innings so a Elvis wannabe can sing all four versus of a karaoke song is brutal. It is time for Goodell to go. What exactly does he believe they have done so strongly??? "

" Me thinks Boyer wasn't the problemo! "

Good Idea Bill ... wrote on Aug 24, 2007 6:17 AM:

" Yeah, they probably should replace the guy who built the franchise into one of the most successful ones in the country. Maybe Goodell should stop bringing in a league-high 7 all-stars each year too ... That would make sense! Thanks Coach Boyer and Go Loggers - See you in 2008! "

" When are the Loggers going to start L-O-O-K-I-N-G for Goodell's replacement? "
