There is evidence of concern about health insurance access

.
Wisconsin’s largest business lobby group has concluded, after seeing the results of a statewide survey it commissioned, that Wisconsin residents are concerned about the cost of health care — but not about access to health care.

The organization might have jumped to the wrong conclusion.
Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce, a Madison-based group, recently commissioned a telephone survey of 500 state residents.

A total of 54 percent of respondents said they opposed a universal health insurance proposal passed by the state Senate, while 37 percent favored it.

Sixty-four percent answered yes to the question of whether they supported “market-based health care reform.”

But here’s the “evidence” for the lack of concern about access to health insurance: Fifteen percent of respondents specifically mentioned high costs, while only 2 percent named “universal access” as a concern.

Given some recent headlines, it might be too early to convince ourselves that health insurance access is not an issue.

A recent Census Bureau report, based on 2006 data, has found that, while the nation’s poverty rate has decreased somewhat, the number of Americans without health insurance has risen — from 44.8 million in 2005 to 47 million in 2006.

That increase was primarily due to employers dropping health coverage. The percentage of Americans receiving health insurance through their jobs has dropped from 60.2 percent in 2005 to 59.7 percent in 2006. In addition, the number of children without health insurance increased from

8 million in 2005 to 8.7 million in 2006.

Wisconsin is ahead of most states in the percentage

of its citizens with health insurance. But, according to the Center on Wisconsin Strategy, even Wisconsin has gradually been losing ground. In 1979, the center said, nearly three-quarters of private-sector workers got insurance from their employers. In 2005, that number dropped to 58 percent.

The situation is worse for people with chronic conditions.

The American Cancer Society is so concerned about the number of uninsured American citizens that it is devoting its entire advertising budget next year on the issue of lack of insurance. One ad says, “This is what a health-care crisis looks like to the American Cancer Society. We’re making progress, but it’s not enough if people don’t have access to the care that could save their lives.”

Given these trends, it’s way too early to declare victory in the effort to improve access to insurance and health care.

" Dear Krusty: There are people with special needs which means those with mental or physical handicaps. And because of the Iraq mishap, there will be many more to add to this area too. Because we treat our returning veterans like garbage than people, their abilities to handle their setbacks will need assistance. Are you that mean-spirited not to do something for them? The uneducated need direction and the ability to see the light. The lazy are not trying to see the light. That's the difference to me. Laziness is not to be tolerated, but Scott attacked the uneducated and there is a difference. "Stupid is as stupid does." Do either of you know the difference? "

" I've decicided your comment was worthless. Anybody with two brain cells to rub together will relize the foolishness of your statement. You are someone who doesn't like government run healthcare but have spent a lot of time on it somehow. To imply there is more fraud and waste in a government program then in our current cooperate system is just, well, plain ignorant. "

" A family making $75,000 a year CAN'T afford health insurance? Yeah, right! Not only can they afford it, they can afford to pay for most hospital visits out of pocket! Besides when have you ever been denied services? A government run health care system would create more waste, fraud, abuse, and death then any possible good it might accomplish. I know, I lived with government health care for 6 years, and it sucks! Have you ever tried arguing with the IRS. Now imagine trying to argue with your Government Health Care provider on what is really wrong and what you really need!!! "

" Bah-Hum-Bug! If the ilk are that sick and can't work and maintain insurance then I say plant them. How will they pay me my due if they can't afford insurance. Better dead then running up the tab! People like Scott, Krusty and myself don't get sick! Bah-Hum-Bug! "

" I'm behind Scott 100% That weird "faase" must believe that being "uneducated" or "lazy" is a disease that can't be cured, so we must coddle and protect our poor lazy ignorant slobs. Almost anybody can get health insurance, if your current employer doesn't offer it (I'm assuming you're employed, is that too much to ask?)go out and buy a newspaper. The want adds are full of jobs that offer benefits such as health insurance. Stop asking the rest of us to pay for your laziness and poor decisions. "

" Scott, I'm happy that you're working. However, you attacked the uneducated and that wasn't nice. There are reasons some people aren't as smart or hard working as you are and it isn't always laziness. Lacking certain job skills or the means to get them can prevent them from succeeding. As more businesses fail to offer health insurance as a benefit to employees, people will be fed up with the "profit at all cost" attitude of the business community. At that point, workers must rise up and require businesses to pay their workers better so they can go out and get their own insurance. We just had Labor Day and its becoming the sad reality that people no longer care about others which was part of the labor movement. You sound like one of the unconcerned for others in this case. Apparently your needs aren't being met. "

" Want health insurance ? Its easy , do what I do. Get a job or two , stay away from the dope and the booze and pay your bills. Its ok to leave your couch home all alone while you're out WORKING ! Universal ins is a bad idea. Is it right that I pay for my insurance AND that of the uneducated ? "

" Family coverage plans cost have skyrocketed. You typically pay 1200.00 to 1500.00 a month for decent health coverage. A family making $75,000.00 can't afford it in todays market. Figure it out! The U.S. is the only civilized country that doesn't have some form of Universal Health Care. We should care more deeply about the health of our people and less about personal greed. "

Not that many really need a government paid health care plan wrote on Sep 4, 2007 2:32 PM:

" Feb. 2007, Investment Business Daily reported on the finding of the Congressional Budget Office. They found that 45% of the uninsured were uninsured for four months or less — just 29% lacked coverage for more than a year. The Census report notes that nearly 40% of the uninsured are young, under age 34. Between 1995 and 2004 (data for the 2005 report), the number of uninsured with family incomes of less than $50,000 actually fell by 8 percent. The number of uninsured in households earning less than $25,000 fell by an estimated 19 percent. But over the same 10-year period in households earning $25,000 or more, nearly 90 percent of the increase in the uninsured has occurred among higher-income households ($50,000 or more). And the number of uninsured Americans in families earning more than $75,000 has increased by 153 percent. "

The real world wrote on Sep 4, 2007 2:22 PM:

" The high cost of excessive competition is what is driving up cost along with many people running to the doctor for insignificant things. We need a system that requires people to pay the first 25 dollars out of their own pocket. "

" the line of the day goes to the Trib. "Given some recent headlines..". ummm, who writes the headlines? could it be the print 'news' media'? could their bias be showing? so should i gather from the 'editorial' board that 'headlines' trump facts? "
