LWV plans immigration meetings

.
Immigration will be the subject of a series of public meetings sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area.

“The league is studying immigration nationally, and these meetings are a way for our members and the community to learn about the issue,” said Elizabeth Kruck, co-chairwoman of the local league’s program committee.
“These are informational programs to learn more about the different aspects of immigration. There’s no agenda or ‘side’,” Kruck said. While there will be time for questions and answers, the meetings aren’t debates, she said.

Starting Thursday, Sept. 13, the league will hold weekly brown bag lunch meetings on different aspects of immigration at South Side Community Center, 1300 S. Sixth St.

The league will co-sponsor a program Tuesday, Oct. 16, at University of Wisconsin-

La Crosse. Here’s the schedule and topics:

  • Sept. 13, noon, language challenges for immigrants. Speakers include English teachers working with people who speak other languages at local colleges and schools.

  • Sept. 20, noon, immigration legal issues. Speakers include an immigration attorney.

  • Sept. 27, noon, racial and ethnic aspects of immigration policy. Speaker is professor Jonathan Majak of UW-L.

  • Oct. 4, economic and job impacts of immigration and migrant labor. Speakers include Terry Hicks of the local AFL-CIO.

  • Oct. 16, 6 p.m., UW-L Cartwright Center, program on the impact of immigration laws on Latino youth, whether born in the United States or immigrating at a very young age with their parents and/or other family members. Presenters include professors Majak, Janis Hansen and Margarita Olivas.

For more information about the league’s immigration programs, call Kruck at (608) 689-2222.

" of what you speak is true, but there is one rather large difference. of what you speak were LEGAL immigrants. i don't think anyone has a problem with immigrants coming here the LEGAL way. but it's the ILLEGAL immigrants that are causing the problems. and exactly what part of ILLEGAL don't you understand? " Has everyone forgotten that long before these new immigrants arrived to the US, the Vietnamese moved to northern Virginia and the Ethiopians and Central Americans revitalized the inner city of Washington, D.C., New York had a Little Italy, Chicago had its Polish neighborhood, and San Francisco had a Chinatown. In each of these places, immigrants of our great-grandparents era heard the same epithets hurled at them: "They would never assimilate, they would never learn English, and they were stealing jobs". Take a look at these immigrants and what they have done and how the new immigrants are far from being charity cases who drain the economy, the new immigrants are contributing to the current economic boom. The truth of the matter is that without immigrants, this country would not be what it is today. "

" how liberal rags like the tribune refuse to use the term ILLEGAL. i don't know anyone that has a problem with LEGAL immigration. lets call it what it is, these criminals are ruining our country, period. if you don't believe me, give it ten or twenty years and watch your children compete for jobs with people that are willing to work for two bucks an hour. "

why the public meetings? wrote on Sep 5, 2007 3:53 PM:

" i think everyone know what immigration is, after all, ALL of our ancestors were immigrants at one time or another. i think it's about time people who have these sort of meetings be honest. this is about ILLEGAL immigration, and unless people can be honest as to that fact, i see no need for meetings. i really find it hard to believe as to what part of ILLEGAL some people just don't understand. " LWV's comment that the immigration meetings have no "agenda", or "side", is not believeable. Any one who has watched national LWV debates or participated in a local event, knows that the goal of the national and local democratic parties is to infiltrate and control LWV's.Here is the real agenda:Sept 13- language challenges, means "There is not enough money and its BUSH's fault! Sept 20- leagal immmigration issues, means "we must grant legal status to illegals". Sept 27- racial aspects means, "cant we all just get along". Oct 4- job impacts means "They are taking away our union jobs", which our "workers wont do because we're not paid enough. Oct 16- impact on latino youths, means "we must be fair and not offend anyones feelings". "
