William ‘Bill’ J. McNulty Jr.
BLACK RIVER FALLS, WIS. — William “Bill” J. McNulty Jr., 84, of rural Black River Falls died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at his home under the care of Black River Hospice of Black River Falls.
William J. McNulty Jr. was born April 5, 1923, in the town of Irving, Jackson County, Wis., to William Sr. and Grace (Thompson) McNulty. He attended the rural Pine Grove School in the town of Albion.
Bill married Marjorie Spors on Aug. 19, 1950, at the Church of St. Albert the Great in Minneapolis.
Together with his two sons, he owned and operated the home farm. He was a true steward of the land and appreciated and loved the cattle, crops and wildlife. With this in mind, the farm was certified organic in 1997 and milk was shipped through Organic Valley.
Bill was a collector of Oliver tractors and was recently featured in the Oliver Heritage magazine. He took part in Lien Implement’s plow days and the many area tractor rides, including the Great Wisconsin Ride from Norwalk, Wis., to Fountain City, Wis. He was a charter member of Jackson County National Farmers Organization and believed in the farmer’s right to price his product.
He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Parish, where he ushered all of his adult life. He was a past member of the parish council and the former Home and School Association. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 4697 and a 4th Degree member of Father Heindl Assembly No. 1902. He was a past member of the Albion Town Board, resigning after receiving state certification for assessing. He enjoyed people and his assessing job gave him the opportunity to meet many. He was a kind, just and loving father and husband. A true friend and good neighbor, never failing the chance to lend a helping hand. He will be missed.
Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marjorie; his daughters, Jennifer McNulty of Madison, Susan (Bob) Howard of Blair, Wis., and Marcy (Jerry) Oehler of Melrose, Wis; his sons, Bill III (Sara) McNulty and Sam (Trisha) McNulty, both of Black River Falls; grandchildren, Taryn Waddington, Molly and Ben Howard, Mandy, Dana, and Jesse McNulty, Emily and Megan Oehler, and Ryan, Danielle and Jared McNulty; sisters, Margaret Fencl of Manitowoc, Wis., Rosemary (Jim) Smetana and Grace Ann McCormick, both of Black River Falls, Janet ((Ed) Wilhelm of Dodgeville, Wis., and Nancy McMahon of Elk Mound, Wis.; brothers, Tom, John (Dorothy), and Jerry (Mary) McNulty, all of Black River Falls, and Mike McNulty of Phoenix; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Grace McNulty; sisters, Mary Dalby and Phyllis Gearing; and in-laws, Ella and Otto Spors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Black River Falls. Burial will be in Melrose Cemetery, Melrose.

OSSEO, Wis. — Douglas Hoshal, 38, of Osseo and formerly of California died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, as a result of an auto accident near Hatfield, Wis. A memorial celebration will be at noon Saturday at Osseo Community Hall. Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, Wis., is assisting the family.
Vernadine La Vonne (Frederickson) Gmur
Vernadine La Vonne Gmur, 76, of La Crosse died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.
She was born Nov. 11, 1930, in La Crosse to Chris and Dorothy (Smith) Frederickson. Vernie was a 1949 graduate of Central High School and a 1953 graduate of the Columbus Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago.
She married Richard Gmur in November 1965 in La Crescent, Minn. He preceded her in death in 1978. Vernie had worked for 38 years at Skemp Clinic, retiring in 1996. She enjoyed her flower garden and attending festivals and art fairs. She also enjoyed her travels to Cuba, China and Mexico as well as to many other locations where she whitewater-rafted and took a Windjammer cruise. Vernie will always be remembered for her vivacious, outgoing personality and her dedication to nursing.
She is survived by a daughter, Amy (John Redmann) Gmur of Minneapolis; and two brothers, William (Patsy) Frederickson of La Crosse and Curtis (Leighnora) Frederickson of Philadelphia. In addition to her husband, Richard, she was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Olson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Chaplain Sue Fletcher will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Taylor Sr., 58, of Black River Falls died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, as the result of injuries sustained in a farm tractor accident. Ronald Lee Heinz
BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. — Ronald Lee Heinz, 48, of Black River Falls died Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, at Sam’s House in Black River Falls surrounded by his family. A long, courageous battle with Huntington’s disease claimed his life.
He was born April 18, 1959, in Black River Falls to Donald and Vivian (Olson) Heinz. He was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Ron attended Black River Falls schools. He received the Badger Boys award and attended Carthage College. After graduation from high school in 1977, he went on to receive his bachelor of science degree in 1981. He then went to Madison to write for the Wisconsin Legislature. He next went to earn his master’s degree from Maxwell College in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1984. After receiving his master’s degree, he was employed as a budget analyst for General Electric until illness forced him to return to the Midwest.
Ron’s musical talent started with the high school band where he was the drum major. He loved to sing and participated in “Tell It Like It is,” Madrigal and the Carthage College Choir. He sang in “Spirit of the Song” in Syracuse, N.Y., and was a member of the Windy City Chorus in Chicago.
Ron loved to travel. His big travel highlight was during his junior year of high school when he and his friend, Randy Smelser, made a trip to Rome. He later toured Europe with the Carthage Choir. Being a member of Huntington Society of America, he went to Kansas and Boston for conventions.
He was an avid sports fan. All events were interesting to him, but, of course, the Packers, Badgers and Brewers received all of his enthusiasm.
Always kind and loving life, his happy smile at gatherings with family and friends will be missed by many.
Ron is survived by his mother, Vivian of Black River Falls; a sister, Lynda Heinz of Black River Falls; a brother, Roger (Katie) Heinz of Black River Falls; a nephew, Kristopher Heinz of Black River Falls; a niece, Kari (Wade) Lawson of Winona, Minn.; great aunts, Lillian Lundsted and Mildred Honevold of Blair, Wis.; and numerous cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents, Earl and Hazel Olson and George and Leone Heinz.
Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 31, 2007, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, and burial was in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls. Paster Ronnie Bakken officiated.
Family and friends paid their respects during visitations at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, and at the church.
John ‘Hank’ Lee Hankey
John “Hank” Hankey, 70, of La Crosse, died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007.
He was born in Watseka, Ill., to Elmer and Vivian (Simpson) Hankey on Dec. 18, 1936. On April 18, 1964, he married June Quinn in La Crosse.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of French Island American Legion Post No. 417. Prior to his retirement in 1985, Hank had driven truck for Domke Construction and Gateway Foods. Hank was an avid Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers fan. After his retirement, Hank enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of La Crosse Moose Lodge No. 1920.
He is survived by his wife, June; a daughter, Jeanine (Eric) Jamesson of Holmen, Wis.; two sons, Jeffery (Teresa) Hankey of Holmen and John R. (Julie) Hankey of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; one grandson, Evan Lee “Nugget” Jamesson; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Quinn of La Crosse and Elsie Hankey of Watseka; many nieces and nephews, Kathy (Bill), Bill (Jodi), Jim (Barb), Patty (Ted), Greg, Scott, Dan (Deb) and Eric (Amy); great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friends, Mary Ann Clark and Diana Hanson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Susan Perkins; and three brothers, James, Tom and Jerry Hankey.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette St., La Crosse. The chaplain of the French Island American Legion Post will officiate, and burial with military honors will be provided by French Island American Legion Post 417, will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends may visit from 5 to 7 p.m. today and 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
