Wallace ‘Wally’ E. Olson
ONALASKA, Wis. — Wallace “Wally” E. Olson, 86, of Onalaska died in his home Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007.
He was born May 14, 1921, in La Crosse to Emil and Anna Olson. He married Kathryn Schneck on Jan. 2, 1942, in Madison, and she preceded him in death on March 7, 2001.
“The secret of success is constancy of purpose.” — Benjamin Disraeli.
Wallace E. Olson certainly was a man of purpose, and that purposeful existence led to enormous success. A 1939 graduate of La Crosse’s Logan High School, he was a standout student athlete. An active and valuable participant in basketball, football and baseball, Olson graduated as salutatorian of his class and was awarded a prized high school honor scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He married Kathryn L. Schneck in 1942, and he graduated from Madison in 1943 with a major in accounting and a minor in philosophy.
After college, Wallace’s purpose shifted to service to his country. He served in the U.S. Maritime Service in New York City and was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1944. After attending Navy Supply School at Harvard University, Olson became a Navy officer and served in World War II on the USS Epping Forest Landing Ship Dock in the Western Pacific and Buckner Bay, Okinawa, during the time of Japanese Kamikaze air attacks on ships in the area.
After completing his military service, Wallace was able to focus on his professional career as an accountant. He began his employment at the La Crosse branch of Alexander Grant & Co. in 1946, auditing such companies as Trane Co., Northern Engraving and La Crosse Rubber Mills. After passing the CPA examination on the first try, he was appointed a managing partner in the La Crosse office in 1949 and in the Chicago office in 1960. In 1965, Olson was elected executive partner and CEO; he presided over the expansion of the firm to become the ninth largest in the U.S. During his career at Alexander Grant & Co., Olson established a network of affiliated foreign public accounting firms to become international in its scope of coverage.
In 1972, Wallace’s purpose reached beyond his individual firm to influence the accounting profession as a whole; he became the full-time president and CEO of the American Institute of Certified Accountants (AICPA) based in New York City and Washington, D.C., a position he held until his retirement in 1980. While at the AICPA, Wallace was chairman of a special committee to revise the AICPA’s Code of Professional Ethics and chairman of the Professional Ethics Division. He testified in the 1970s as a principal spokesman for the CPA profession during congressional hearings investigating the profession’s performance in auditing companies registered with the Securities & Exchange Commission. In response to the investigations, Olson developed and implemented a series of important reforms, including the establishment of a Public Oversight Board. Both at a national and international level, Wallace Olson was instrumental in setting the standards by which the accounting profession operates today, and he authored a book: “The Accounting Profession — Years of Trial 1969-1980.” Wallace received the AICPA Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Service and the John J. McCloy Award for Distinguished Contributions to Auditing.
Wallace Olson’s purposeful life positively affected all at Logan High, which inducted him into its Wall of Fame.
He is survived by two daughters, Jane Olson of Milwaukee and Ellen (John) Kramer of Omaha, Neb.; a son, Steven (Pamela) Olson of Madison; four grandchildren, Simon, Nathaniel and Benjamin Olson and Elizabeth Kurtz. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska. The Rev. Carly Kuntz will officiate, and burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.
