UW-L, as part of the Safe
La Crosse program to promote responsible drinking in the community, will host the eighth annual RECtoberfest from 9 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 28, in UW-L’s Eagle Recreation Center.
The event offers activities, games and raffle tickets for students too young to drink at the Oktoberfest grounds on opening night of the fest.
Shuttle buses will be provided from Viterbo University and Western Technical College to encourage students from all three campuses to attend the event.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to experience Oktoberfest,” Nathan Barnhart, assistant director of rec sports at UW-L, said. “There’s a population that doesn’t get to, and this is a way to do it.”
Barnhart said the event averages about 500 students each year, and UW-L provides a variety of activities, including wall-climbing, volleyball, disc golf, yard games and inflatable games.
Raffle tickets also are available, with a chance to win prizes ranging from gift certificates and T-shirts to an iPod and a Pontiac G5.
Joe Hoff, 22, a first-year graduate student in sports administration, oversaw the student committees planning RECtoberfest. Students had less than a month to prepare, he said, and it’s a good opportunity for area college students.
“They can get somehow involved with the campus community,” Hoff said, “and see what’s out there and what’s offered to them.”
The chance to win an iPod or a car is great, Hoff said, but the chance to make new friends and have fun is even better.
