Drink responsibly during fest

.
On the eve of Oktoberfest, it’s worth reflecting on the need for responsible drinking and personal safety.

And it’s worth reviewing some of the safety measures that will be put in place downtown.
By all means, enjoy the fest and have fun.

But know when to stop drinking, and take advantage of the city’s Safe Ride bus, if you need it. With the number of visitors in La Crosse during the weekend, we need to think about moderation for everyone’s safety.

There are some new safety efforts under way. Bar owner Marc Fortney is allowing the use of his building at the corner of Third and Pearl streets as an “aid station.”

It will be equipped with restrooms, tables and chairs, telephones, first aid supplies and cots. The Third Street Aid Station will be manned from

6 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. today and from 3 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

It’s a place where individuals can go for first aid, to seek directions, find rides or meet lost friends.

The Safe Ride Bus will be at Third and Jay streets, a Tri-State Ambulance will be parked near the Aid Station and manned at all times, and the La Crosse Fire Department will have someone on the scene at all times.

All three campuses will offer alcohol-free alternative events, and there also will be the Turned Leaf alcohol-free picnic at Myrick Park.

But even if you’re not alcohol free, use some common sense, keep track of where your friends are and, above all, know when to quit.

Have a safe Oktoberfest.

" Well EricKrusty: How was the soiling? I know I had fun watching those Packers...and I can remember the game much more clearly and without the hangover that the drunks suffered Sunday. Getting drunk is so juvenile, but then again I must acknowledge the poster for acting so. Maybe when Krusty grows up and can think for himself instead of acting like a clown... Oh I'm sorry, he votes for clowns like Bush for president so I should never expect him to grow up. BTW was Bush ever one of your drinking buddies? "

" Once again the blog responses to a Trib editorial entertain and amuse. Second hand smoke versus alchohol. What an epic battle being waged for superiority. I love it, from afar. Thanks for the show. "

" Well, "Kamikazeedaryll" aren't you the boring one? Stay home daryll, your presence wouldn't bring joy to anyone anyway "

" Those who overindulge I hope see the cold reality of a jail cell. I plan on staying home for the most part except Sunday when I will visit a good friend. Packer/Viking football is much more fun than getting wasted, but fools learn the hard way. There isn't any reason for me to waste money on Octoberfest. My bills are more important to pay than being around drunks. If I wanted to have fun, I'd get out of town to relax somewhere. Beer has never recharged anyone's batteries from working hard, yet it can leave a person awfully sick. I wonder how many extra hours I will need to cover for all the beer related illnesses? Have a safe Oktoberfest. "

" Not only am I going to get so drunk I soil myself, I am going to get so drunk that I soil any others that are even remotely close to me! "

" So some people want to get so plastered drunk that they soil themselves...well so be it, it's their lives and it's the mindset of the community. As long as they don't damage any property, drive anywhere, or do any sort of criminal activities I honestly don't care if they wander their drunken butts into the river or in front of a bus. It's their choice to put their OWN lives in jeopardy (though I would hope they actually don't.) As long as they leave me out of it I honestly don't give a hoot. Have a great weekend! "

" goofygurl you are wrong. Your drinking could very well kill me. In fact there's far more evidence that alcholics have killed far more people then second-hand smoke ever has. I grew up with a smoking Dad and second hand smoke for 18 years. Guess what? It didn't kill me. In fact I have a very clean bill of health. Alcohol has claimed far 'second hand' people then cigarrets ever has. I agree that personal responcibility is required, and that the vast majority practice that. However, as a Society or community we are sending mixed signals to our children about dangerous habits and if we REALLY want to see kids say something other than "there's nothing to do but drink" then we need to rethink what we adults are DOING. BTW, when people really want to soil themselves there is something else wrong with society. "

" Don't do this and don't do that. Ban this and regulate that. MOST of US don't need nanny government. We don't need you or the government to teach, preach or bitch about our use of legal products. Just about every product is responsible for giving you cancer, adding extra pounds, and premature death if we listen to the constant rants and holier than thou attitudes. LEAVE US ALONE! "

" Phil O'Bates... Maybe because me taking a drink isn't going to kill you if I'm sitting right next to you. But if you smoke next to me. I get lung cancer and DIE! No thanks.. But I'll take another round please! Because I choose to soil myself as well! :0p "

Nikki Beaverhausen wrote on Sep 28, 2007 7:25 AM:

" For heaven's sake, we need alcohol free alternatives because why? I'll be at the fest, I won't be drinking. Just because alcohol is present doesn't mean you have to partake or over indulge. I don't get this. I mean fine, have the other events but what message are we sending? If alcohol is present we are powerless to resist so there should be none? Is the beer going to jump off the table, wrestle you to the ground and pour itself down your throat? I don't see what is so hard about showing a little personal restraint. "

Phil O'Bates wrote on Sep 28, 2007 5:09 AM:

" Yes, drink responcibly, but heaven forbid if you smoke in a bar or restaurant. That would be a detriment to society. It seems surreal. All these articles about teenage drinking, and drunk people falling off of bluffs and into rivers, and drunks killing teenagers, and we wonder why do our kids think drinking is so grand? Well, what's one of La Crosse's biggest money makers? Octoberfest. We have parades for kids and adults promoting the great past time of drinking. Yet, why don't we do the same for tobbaco? After all, when was the last time smoking cigarettes caused a teenager to fall off of a bluff or jump in the Mississippi or cause a driver to jump a median and kill a teenager? Kids see right through our hipocracy. If La Crosse really wants kids to stop drinking, then La Crosse's adults must lead by example. "
