Then again, the medical field interests the Onalaska High School junior, too.
“I personally have no idea what I want to be,” she said. “I think a lot of people are in that same boat.”
Subhani, 16, and approximately 1,600 students from 21 area schools recently learned about careers and post-secondary education opportunities during the annual Career Expo and Wisconsin Education Fair at the La Crosse Center.
“I think it is really a good idea to get started now,” Subhani said. “Everyone is a little freaked.”
Students participating in the expo, sponsored by the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce and the Tech Prep Council at Western Technical College, visited booths staffed by professionals in selected careers and had the opportunity to talk with admissions officials from 110 educational institutions.
Speakers also talked about ACT preparation, interview skills and the difference between a two- and four-year post-secondary school.
Joel Griffis, a 16-year-old Brookwood High School junior, spent the day collecting information about military options that included schools that offer ROTC programs.
“My family is a military family,” he said. “My grandpa, dad, sister — they’ve all been in.”
Griffis was impressed by the number of colleges with ROTC programs. “I’ll have to look and see which is the best fit,” he said.
Caleb Buchanan, 16, attended career exploration programs focused on welding and firefighting during the expo.
The Brookwood junior said his dad sparked his interest in welding. Becoming a firefighter “would be a fun job,” he said.
Logan High School junior Tony Hundt took a step to receive additional information on his choice schools by filling out college information request slips.
“This has been a great opportunity to look at the colleges I want to go to,” said Hundt, 16. “I had done some research ... before I came.”
