Gow pays for own inauguration ceremony

.
University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow has paid the approximately $8,000 cost for his inauguration ceremony Friday.

He and wife, Betsy Valentine, wrote the university a check for nearly $7,600 to cover all non-donated expenses and paid UW-L student Matt Duckett $400 for a special portrait for the inauguration.
“We wanted to give something back to the university that has given so much to us, and in a very short time,” said Gow, who has been at UW-L since February. “People here have been so welcoming and so supportive.”

As a university leader, he needs to be careful how resources are used, Gow said.

“Spending thousands on essentially a party for the chancellor shouldn’t be a high priority right now,” he said.

It also was difficult to justify using taxpayer money for his installation, Gow said, especially with the ongoing state budget stalemate.

“I want them (legislators) to know how I understand how challenging that is, and we are going to do everything we can at UW-La Crosse and the Wisconsin system to make the most of the resources we have and, more importantly, the resources we need for a strong future,” said Gow.

When Gow appointed a committee to plan the event, he said he told them “we are not throwing a prom.”

“What I meant was, let’s keep it simple, tasteful and keep the costs down,” he said.

Which they did: in comparison, Doug Hastad’s inauguration in April 2002 cost $11,528, according to a Tribune article.

Part of the savings for Gow’s ceremonies came by having his wife, a graphic designer, create the invitations and programs.

This isn’t the first time Gow has given back. As Nebraska Wesleyan University interim president, he donated a $24,000 farewell bonus to a fund to install sprinklers in Nebraska Wesleyan’s fraternity houses after a 19-year-old student died in a fire at one of the houses.

" Appreciative, sensible, generous, kind, caring, humble, decent, all these and a leader of a great institutin here. We are a fortunate group of people to have somebody in Gow's position display this type of gratitude it restores me in a spiritual way. Wouldn't it be great if he touched off a chain reaction on some of the frivolous spending in other offices and institutions here to do the same. "

" TO: laxer21- Speaking as a citizen of Lacrosse one of the major reason our old Chancellor is not here is because he was too many times where he should not have been. "

" I am a student at UW-L and I feel that Joe Gow is truly doing an outstanding job. You must remember he walked into some of the issues I hear people on this site complaining about. People before Chancellor Gow have created ideas about the stadium, the Growth and Access project, etc. He has/ and still is doing an amazing job dealing with the issues at hand while being upfront with them. Previous administration would push these "problems" off to hide or have someone else deal with at a later date. "

" I don't even recall what the old chancellor looks like, but this year I have seen him easily over 20 times around campus. The students have created shirts with the motto "In Gow we trust" written around his picture. For those of you are weary of the Chancellor I encourage you to set up a 10 minute appointment with him- he does has office hours. At least voice your opinion and give him a fair chance to respond. "

" To JD5400: What's selfless about dumping part of the cost of UW=L's useless and elitist stadium project on working-class tourists in our local hotels? If all y'all want to be selfless, get a bucket of paint and a brush and fix up your (your, as in not mine) welfare-for-upscale-suburbanite-sports-fans stadium yourself. Ordinary La Crosse citizens don't give a @~}!& about UW-L sports or about self-congratulatory inauguration ceremonies until they are asked to pay for them. UW-L, learn to play within your state-subsidized sandbox...the locals have elementary schools to pay for, so keep your stadium wants from draining the citizenry's ability to pay for their legitimate needs. If you can't pay for your fun-and-games, then cancel them altogether...that's what I do when I can't afford a new Nintendo box. Get real! "

" Thanks Joe, Finally someone who has a grasp on the big picture, We must stop spending taxpayer money in order to welcome a new chancellor. It is so easy to spend taxpayer money, we don't bat an eye at it anymore. Only Joe Gow has the real world sense to see this abuse. Imagine if he had put that money toward a worthy cause! "

" Nice work Chancellor...........I just hope you stick around here long enough to have some positive influence on the small minds in this community. (You'll see many of them posting on this website.) Have a great day, and a great inauguration! "

" Well if I made as much as Joe, I could do that to. Why not give it back to the college and not a party? Front door is now closing. "

" Sounds like this Gow character is a classy guy. I've never met him, probably never will, but I like him already (based on this article and the 1 or 2 others I've read about him). I think his donation to cover the inaugural ball is a class act. Well done. For the whiners and naysayers, shut the front door. "

" When Mr. Gow first came into town I begged to set aside time and come to his office to meet him. I left with the feeling that this was a man of virtue and integrity. I really do not think this is 'damamge control' spurned on by others. The question I still have lingering in my brain is he strong enough to stand up and vote or say no when being leaned on by 'On Too Many Boards', his accompanying government fund human drains, and their minions. Time will tell. "

" Hooray! Yippee! Maybe Joe can pay for the stadium nonsense too, so working class hotel visitors in Onalaska don't get fleeced by the Onalaska (La Crosse, Jr.) Mayor (he likes to be called Mark Johnsrud, Jr.) to pay for the All-Important-Local-Sports-Clique's silly football games! Got about five million layin' around, Joe? Big Spender's Brilliant Idea Number 25,097: move the $180K Rose Street statue, the LaX Center's $1M glass bridge, and $92,000 in city council laptop computers complete with software to the new stadium...ya can use that stuff to train footballers and track-heads if ya use yer imagination (hurdle them laptops and do curls from the statue, etc.)! "
