2007 Oktoberfest attendance down

.
Rainy weather is being blamed for fewer people attending this year’s Oktoberfest.

Ed Przytarski, Oktoberfest president, said button sales were down at least 3 percent this year, and attendance was not to capacity at the festgrounds.
“We had a little bit of weather Saturday through Thursday,” Przytarski said.

The wet weather, however, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the festgoers.

“In the general, the people we had were very friendly,” he said. “They were very receptive to everything that had to do with the fest. They were great to be with.”

Button sales are the main source of revenue for Oktoberfest, Przytarski said, but income expectations were lowered this year so the festival didn’t suffer a financial loss.

Oktoberfest organizers already are looking ahead to next year.

Przytarski confirmed the incoming Oktoberfest president and board will discuss

the possibility of a family-friendly zone along the parade route. He hinted the area could keep drinking and noise under tighter control.

“We are giving that some thought,” he said.

" The weather had nothing to do with the low attendence. The economy and increasing regulations had everything to do with it. In years past rain, cold or even snow didn't stop fest goers. But people can't afford to do what they did in years past due to the economy. I won't come down to the Fest unless I have a grand in my pocket. I knew people that would fly in from California to just go to Octoberfest. Not any more. To exspensive now a day. If they lower the drinking age to 18 like they are trying to do then you will see an increase but that will bring about many problems in it's self. "

" Chronic Complainer when has October fest ever been Family Oriented???? It is a lot more mellower today and Family Oriented than ever in years past. You must have not gone to many fests. "

" To: AntiEverything- Oktoberfest has been working with a different management company, Vector Management? or something like that, and not Kid Rocks manager. I've heard Vector works with Bon Jovi and was very crucial in pushing Bon Jovi to play Country Jam. "

" I was down at the fest grounds the first Sat., and the 2nd Fri.-both nights were packed. The bands that were there, The Dweebs and Brat Pack Radio, were very fun! Nightranger and Joe Diffie...come on. I don't think any night of Riverfest, Joe Diffie or not, has ever made near what a night at Oktoberfest does. "

" Surely you jest. KID ROCK? BTW he fired his manager today so I guess its back to the drawing board for the OKT committee. Maybe Elton John is available. "

" Oktoberfest is only as fun as you, the fester, makes it. If you are there to watch a dull parade, your asking for boredom. If you are their for the people watching, and enjoying a fresh beverage or 2, then it's actually quite enjoyable, even though I got soaked from the rain, it was as always fun. Pitchers of beer at $10 a crack, well that's not so great. btw the German band that was there were entertaining but did not play live, all the background music was recorded. "

" The Maple Leaf Parade is not good anymore. The young cheerleader/pom pom types use to be fun to lear at; now these kids are all overweight and not very sexy. John's Bar after the parade is always a good time, and I found that Southside grounds excellent. The parade would be better if they started it at 11:00 AM, this 9:30 AM start is crazy. "

" One thing I do now that I'm older and drink less is hang out and listen to the german bands. The crowd is fun but not just there to get wasted, everyone sits at long tables and converses with one another and it reminds me of what it's like at the festivals we attended in Germany, and there are several festivals, and they all serve beer and wine, and there are children there, and it is seldom out of control. Actually I didn't see much in the way of drunk people this year. I didn't go on 3rd St. at night, and I didn't hang out at the festgrounds late at night. There is plenty to do for everyone and it's a great time. "

" I quite liked the entertainment on the Southside Festgrounds. The only thing I would change is to put Brat Pack Radio back on the first Saturday night. I had a great time there both weekends! The band that played on the Northside after the Torchlight parade was not the best and I actually only stayed about a half hour because of it. I agree that more buttons would sell at $5. But aside from button sales, I want to hear the final tally for BEER sales!! "

" Who wouldn't be "friendly" after too many beers! This whole thing is a crock and I'm all for more really rainy, really cold weather late September and early October-- we've got to stop global warming so we can put a stop to this city drunk. By the way, how much did the police overtime, waste cleanup, detox and jail processing cost the city this year? "

daddylonglegs wrote on Oct 17, 2007 10:08 AM:

" After wasting $5 this year (bought early), i vowed NEVER to attend the Octoberfest grounds again. I thought the money was wasted. I'm not a beer drinker (only mixed when i do drink) and i thought the bands were deafening and not up to my liking. This town has too many fests. How about one good one? I stopped going to the parade when i was maybe 13? Good luck Octoberfest... Kid Rock? I'd rather listen to Night Ranger. "

" The $7 button isn't worth the aluminum they mold it from. And good luck mississippi queen--keep up the good work and maybe one day there will be no more drunken fools wandering the riverside! (that's sarcasm for those who missed it) "

" Lesdent...Night Ranger is Country? Is that beer still in the ol'system? I have lived in the area 2 years now and in those 2 years...the parade has become more and more alcohol influenced. I go to see my kids march in the high school band...not get drenched in beer. Oh...the Mississippi Queen...is hot! "

GARVI wrote on Oct 17, 2007 8:49 AM:

" RE; Lets face it, it sounds like you need to find another place to watch the parade at.Or just stay home and complain about it.P.S. I feel sorry for your kids if you keep them away. "

" Rumor has it next year they are already looking at...and you won't believe it...Kid Rock. He is touring in support of his new album and the day of the Maple Leaf parade he is in Minneapolis and has Sunday off before he plays in Madison on Monday. They might get him for a steal to play on Sunday. That is from a very reliable source, a friend of mine involved with Oktoberfest entertainment booking. Right now it's about a 40% chance they get him for what they've said they pay, but hey, you never know. Call Oktoberfest and tell them not to give up on this one! "

doctor9 wrote on Oct 17, 2007 8:16 AM:

" Totally agree with lesdent. Bring in a band the public has heard of, and we'll come to hear them play. Even a tribute band would be something. I still remember when the Beatles tribute band came to Riverfest in the early 90's -- the park was PACKED with people in front of their stage... and even though the bass player got stuck in traffic and was late, they were STILL worth it, because they put on a great show. "

lesdent wrote on Oct 17, 2007 8:02 AM:

" In years past they have brought National Acts such as Joe Diffie and i saw a whole lot of people there. I would bet that Riverfest made more money. If they used there stages like Riverfest does and brought acts and shows that people are intrested in, maybe more people would come. Bring back National Acts, maybe some Classic Rock or country like maybe nightranger or something "

Lets Face It wrote on Oct 17, 2007 7:55 AM:

" This is just a big keg party rapped up in the disguise of a family fest. To make matters worse they throw a parade in the middle of it. I will never take my kids to the Maple Leaf parade again. This has gotten way out of control. And to think this town says its concerned with alcohol abuse. Ha!! They throw the biggest bash of the year!! "
