Speakers say alternative energy key to development

.
Alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, ethanol and biodiesel will play a key role in economic development, officials said Wednesday at an economic forum at the Radisson Hotel.

About 130 people attended the event, held by the La Crosse Area Development Corp. and the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce.
Gundersen Lutheran plans to use renewable energy sources and energy efficiency improvements as part of its new Envision initiative, said Jerry Arndt, the health care company’s senior vice president of business services.

Energy management, recycling, and waste management and control are the three primary elements of Envision, the company’s plan for energy and environmental stewardship.

Arndt said solar panels will provide the electricity needed to power lighting, ventilation and elevator operation for the underground parking structure that will be completed in 2008 next to Gundersen Lutheran’s main clinic. And starting next year, solar energy will be used for at least some of the hot water for Gundersen Lutheran’s laundry operations.

Gundersen Lutheran and City Brewery also have done a preliminary feasibility study, now taken to an advanced feasibility study, on using methane gas from the brewery’s wastewater treatment plant to create electricity, Arndt said. “The methane that’s being burned as waste gas now would drive an electrical generation device to produce electricity,” he later said in an interview.

AgWind Energy Partners, LLC continues its efforts to develop wind farms in Trempealeau and Buffalo counties, said Jim Naleid of La Crosse, managing director of the limited liability corporation.

He said a coalition of “anti-wind zealots” has slowed efforts in Trempealeau County, but his group received a much different reception in Buffalo County.

“If it were up to Buffalo County, they would be happy to have us begin building soon,” Naleid later said in an interview. “Land owners are on board, very interested and recognize the opportunity they have.” Naleid said his group could have a wind farm producing electricity by 2010.

Western Wisconsin Energy LLC started up its new ethanol plant near Boyceville, Wis., a year ago, said its president, Paul Harrison. The facility will produce more than 40 million gallons of ethanol a year from 18 million bushels of corn.

The plant created 37 full-time jobs and with other ethanol plants has helped boost corn prices for farmers, he said.

Gov. Jim Doyle earlier this year created the state’s new Office of Energy Independence to advance his energy policies and promote the state’s bioindustry, said David Jenkins, its director of commercialization and market development.

" Clean Nuclear Power. The biggest scam in the 1)Mining and exploration. Uranium mining has poisoned and led to hundreds of deaths in this country alone, mostly Indigenous People, but nuclear power advocates never mention that. 2) Refining nuclear fuel. One of the largest users of fossil fuels is used to create nuclear fuel rods. Nuclear Power, fossil free, what a joke. 3)Nuclear accidents at power plants and ongoing cancer rates. If nuclear power plants are so safe, than name a single private insurance company that will provide insurance. 4) Consumers pay again and again. Xcel wants over $100 a year from each home in LaCrosse, not for more local clean renewable energy but a rate increase to help pay for aging nuclear power plants. 5) The high level radioactive waste, where do countries around the world get plutonium for weapons, the nuclear industry. " I had a front row seat for all of this in the late 70's and early 80's. When the 'embargo' hit and we as a country hired an energy czar, Schlesinger. I started up and managed many Utility Companies Energy Consultant Programs, including then, NSP, REA's, REC's, etc. I also spoke more than once in front of the Management and hierarchy of Utility Companies at there yearly Convention. Point? We talked about it a lot then as well. One can only hope that it is not too late. That one day we will turn around, look at each other involved in chaos and ask, How did we get here? None of this is new, none of it. "

" Amen to nuclear. It has been brought up but the environmentalist wackos have too much power in this country "

" we already have a clean source of energy, and have been using it for the past 30 or so years. it's called 'nuclear'. could someone tell me why this is never brought up to expand it's useage? it's safe, clean and relatively cheap. what more could you ask for? "

" Bring on the $6/gal! That is the only way Americans will reduce consumption. "

" There is something appealing in the posts by PicklesPlease...in my mind, he/she is speaking about our society's materialistic buying/spending habits. I'm not ready to trade in my auto for a horse and buggy, but I'm ready to be part of a trend or movement that reduces consumption. As a society, our consumption culture is really atrocious. "

" think of all the landfills, the burning pollutants, the accumulated batteries, the bathroom cleaners that go down your drain and into your water sources EVERY single day. alternative energy is just a bandaid onto a much bigger problem. the amish are onto something. can we emulate some of their practices? say for one, ditching our electronics? HE11 no, you say? well farewell planet Earth, it was fun while it lasted. "

PicklesPlease wrote on Oct 18, 2007 9:11 AM:

" another funny thing is how eager we americans are to find alternative energy sources but yet no one seems to be doing too much at all to actually reduce energy consumption and reduce pollution. still buying plastic like mad, rarely recycling, replace not repair is our moddo--do you know how many bags of garbage you throw out each week. do you think it goes off to a magical fairy land and disappears from the face of the earth? "

V.O.R. wrote on Oct 18, 2007 9:10 AM:

" Definitely agree with the postings here so far. Ethanol surely is not what the media hypes it up to be. Big Spender hit it right on the head. And how about wind? Germany is supposedly a world leader in wind power and that is not going so well? It doesn't replace coal fired. Actually needs to be supplemented by coal fired anyway. Not windy - no power. Too windy - not operational due to risk of damage. Wind = overwhelming tax burden, subsidies. "

Terminus wrote on Oct 18, 2007 8:48 AM:

" It takes 4 gallons of crystal clear fresh purified water to make 1 gallon of Ethanol gasoline. WE need to get off of this Ethanol kick, it will destroy America as we know it. Already you are seeing food prices skyrocketing. And lets not forget about the water that will be used to feed this Ethanol dream. We can kiss our Great Lakes goodbye. "

" please we must research ethanol, it is a huge wast of energy, other ideas are great. "

Big Spender wrote on Oct 18, 2007 12:18 AM:

" Oh, no! Here are more suckers who've fallen for the Great Corn Ethanol Scam! This illustrates the weak business case for corn ethanol: MN company cancels "$115 million ethanol plant near Erskine because of the high cost of corn and lower prices for ethanol." http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=267278 Corn ethanol is just a way for politicians to buy farm voters and stealth-tax the rest of us with higher food and fuel prices. Even if all 200 million acres of U.S corn were converted to EtOH production, you'd only replace twelve percent of U.S. gasoline needs, worse, it takes almost as much energy to produce and ship the stuff as you'd get out. Here's an ABC News video from a conservative reporter, John Stossel: "Myth: Corn ethanol is Great" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9QQcP_Y1II " "
