" Gow is good. Get all sports out of taxpayer funded schools from middle through university. Let them form voluntary federations with coaches supplied by enthusiasts and feeder teams pulling from the whole area. We could save millions by getting sports out of schools. "

" Gow realizing he had little choice given the circumstance ahead of the UW system this act was not a classy one but one knowing that all heck would have broke loose had he NOT paid for it. And for the most part I agree with bigspender, stop taxing us and take from the Gow's and rich alumni salaries, by the way at 0-3 in conference do they really deserve a new stadium. HA "

" This is more proof that even if you have a handful of college degree's, it doesn't mean you're very smart. I can not believe the gall of the university to beg for money to support the new stadium complex and at the same time think nothing of wasting $8,000 inaugurating a chancellor. Do these people not think? "

" Maybe you could check next time 'On Too Many Boards' buys his Brooks Bros suits. If they could outfit the Tribune management with matching short pleated skirts to go along with their jumping and pom-poms. "

" Big spender seems to have an axe to grind about UW-L. First of all the story was about the inaugeration ceremony. Nothing wrong with celcbrating, but someone has to pay for the party. THe chancellor did. Nice. Now back to the axe. There are about 200 D3 football programs, and UW-L is above average in its success, but not out of line at all with the idea of student athletics as a part of the college experience. So you cannot pick on UW-L for playing football. Having said that, I do not think that the taxpayers should be paying for a new stadium in its entirety. Since the community benefits greatly from the state track meet, the community should be willing to donate at least half the money. And by community I mean those who benefit directly in revenue from it. "

" to thinktwice, thinkonce: the foolish stadium tax on hotel guests is not only wrong on principle, the working class is getting nibbled to death from many sources at once--gas, TIFs, food, heating, Iraq, outsourcing, ad infinitum. Anyhow, the 'donation' is mere grandstanding by Chancellor Gow. No one is blocking UW-L's frivolous stadium project; just don't ask a community struggling to find funds for elementary schools to pay for the U's wants out of citizen needs. Also, a half-percent tax applied over a long hotel stay or for large groups of reserved guests (conventions) is not trivial to those who have to pay for it (the ever-needy-local-sports-clique doesn't care about these costs to others as long as they get their useless football games). Soon, the U will be looking for more ways to put the bite on uninvolved folks who've no interest in their Coliseum. "

" bigspender, your nuts, a half cent increase in the hotel tax means 50 cents on a 100 dollar room who cares, stop being bitter towards the world.................................................by the way good job Joe Gow, great example! "

" Whoopee wow! The anointed one pays for his own coronation...what could possibly be next? Could it be that Baron Gow will spurn the Onalaska mayor's (who prefers to be addressed as Mark Johnsrud's Mini-Me) offer to fleece unsuspecting hotel visitors with a room tax for the U's proposed Coliseum splurge??? Could the end of Football and Circuses at the La Crosse Institute of Athletic Technology (aka UW-L...call it Football Tech, for short) be at hand? "
